  • Automatic detection of pig wasting diseases is an important issue in the management of group-housed pigs. In particular, porcine respiratory diseases are one of the main causes of mortality among pigs and loss of productivity in intensive pig farming. In this paper, we propose a noise-robust system for the early detection and recognition of pig wasting diseases using sound data. In this method, first we convert one-dimensional sound signals to two-dimensional gray-level images by normalization, and extract texture images by means of dominant neighborhood structure technique. Lastly, the texture features are then used as inputs of convolutional neural networks as an early anomaly detector and a respiratory disease classifier. Our experimental results show that this new method can be used to detect pig wasting diseases both economically (low-cost sound sensor) and accurately (over 96% accuracy) even under noise-environmental conditions, either as a standalone solution or to complement known methods to obtain a more accurate solution.

  • The objectives of this study were to develop a system linking hydrologic and water quality models considering the mechanisms of agricultural reservoir and paddy cultivation and to evaluate whether the developed system simulates hydrologic and water quality processes better than a hydrologic model that do not consider the mechanisms. The system consisted of Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) as a watershed model, Module-based hydrologic Analysis System for Agricultural watersheds (MASA) as reservoir water balance model, and Chemical, Runoff and Erosion from Agricultural Management System-Paddy (CREAMS-PADDY) as a hydrologic and water quality model for paddy fields. This study carried out on the Seolseong-Cheon watershed in Icheon, and the water level and water quality had been monitored for two years at the outlet of the watershed. According to the results of this study, the performance of the simulation using HSPF-MASA-CREAMS-PADDY system was better than others, but they did not show a statistically significant difference. This seemed to be due to the uncertainty of the farming data and the water quality data of the reservoir. Therefore, if accurate input data for the system is obtained, HSPF-MASA-CREAMS-PADDY system could be used to model an agricultural watershed to obtain more realistic results. The results of this study could be utilized to the modeling of agricultural watersheds in Korea where paddy rice cultivation is dominant.

  • With enforcement of five-day workweek system, leisure time for family has increased. However, there is imbalance between demand and supply of leisure because of the absence of proper way for spending leisure time with family. On the other hand, TV, which has been playing an important role as a media for family, shows new possibility of interaction with advent of Smart TV. With this tendency, now it could be an appropriate time for researching the healthy way to spend leisure time on weekend with family. Therefore this paper aims to propose a family farming contents called 'Our Farm', which links on-line and off-line. To firm up necessity and appropriateness of this paper, I analyzed existing thesis and games for family and did FGI(Focus Group Interview) with a family. In this research, I proposed the picture UI based on results of investigation.

  • A GoldSim template program for a safety assessment of a hybrid-typed repository system, called "A-KRS," in which two kinds of pyro-processed radioactive wastes, low-level metal wastes and ceramic high-level wastes that arise from the pyro-processing of PWR nuclear spent fuels are disposed of, has been developed. This program is ready both for a deterministic and probabilistic total system performance assessment which is able to evaluate nuclide release from the repository and farther transport into the geosphere and biosphere under various normal, disruptive natural and manmade events, and scenarios. The A-KRS has been deterministically assessed with 5 various normal and abnormal scenarios associated with nuclide release and transport in and around the repository. Dose exposure rates to the farming exposure group have been evaluated in accordance with all the scenarios and then compared among other.

  • The production of cultured coho salmon (Oncorhpchus kisutoh) in Korea has being increased year after year. Smolt being reared in freshwater suffer transferring into seawater and are farmed in cages for fattening. This handling processes including transportation, confinement into cages are unavoidable stress to fish in salmon farming and often end up to mass mortality, This study aimed to investigate the impact of handling process on the stress responses of coho salmon. The indicator of stress was measured by cortisol to be a first response, and for the second response test, glucose, triBlyceride, cholesterol, lactate and electrolyte of $K^+, Na^+, Cl^-$ in serum and the activities of alanine aminotrtnferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase(AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were analyzed. As a result, the concentration of cortisol, glucose as well as LDH activity were significantly increased, whereas others showed no difference comparing with control group. It obviously demonstrated that handling process made fish stressful.

  • This article centers on 'rural landscape' in terms of subjects and subject-words among journals that are registered or would be registered in Korea Education and Research Information Service from 1995 up to 2014 to group 109 theses by subject that include planning, projects, residents' participation, that are fit for the purpose of this study so that research trends by journal, change in subjects by year and change in detailed subjects may be analyzed. Its detailed outcome is as follows. First, current situations of carrying theses by academic society shows that a total of 23 societies have conducted research, among which, International Society for Rural Plan In Korea has contributed 57 theses followed by Korean Science of Landscape Architecture with 10 theses and Korean Rural Society with 8 theses. Among them, Korean Rural Society is the only one continually contributing theses up until now, positioning itself at the center of rural landscape research. Second, a look into years shows that there was meager researches made; 6 from 1995 ~ 1999, 9 from 2000 to 2004 while there was a leap up to 55 from 2005 to 2009. There was a decrease down to 39 theses from 2010 to 2014 but research activities went on.

  • The Extension Program accountability will continue to be an influential force to develop agriculture and rural area. As we incorporate new approaches into our service program and respond to new domains of knowledge, we must also consider how our assessment strategies may need to change in order to meet local and other external standards. The main purpose of the study was to be what the best way of Extension Service is set farmers' educational needs met and to be what kind of methodologies and role of Extension system should provide for their faced problem solving effectively. The major results of the study on Farmers' needs toward Korean Extension Services are summarized as follows. First, it is observed that, when the farmers' perceptions were analyzed, the most ranked by the farmers' needs was "having nice extension workers to get advice and solve their problems on the farm in all at once." Farmers had especially more positive attitudes in the categories of interest and careers in ag-technology. To do services level up, the headquarter of Rural Development of Administration must be work with local branches to effectively deliver their missions and educational objectives to target crops and farmers group. And farmers were strongly needed "a specialized service team will be organized" to work closely with operating services for ag-products processing, packing and marketing. The recommendations were made by: farmers' needs should be identified and announced by computer networking development to solve their problems faster. Also, provincial and county level service members should have a chance to working at research institute or related work places with their incentives, which system will be easer to meet farmers' needs and deal with their problems so that the systematic approaches should be managed and recorded their educational attendings, education contents and even their farming corporations. Finally, Agricultural Extension Service should be met to general ag-technology literacy and be balanced with knowledge of other industries and be competitive service with better values in non-agricultural sectors.

  • A survey of physical inputs was conducted on the total population of dairy farms supplying milk to the Rewa cooperative dairy company in Fiji. The critical inputs associated with total farm milk production were determined using multiple regression, with analyses being conducted for each of the three identified supplier groups, bulk milk, canned milk and cream. Mean annual milk production per cow averaged 1460 (s.d. = 319), 889 (s.d. = 321) and 800 (s.d. = 451) litres for the bulk milk, canned milk and cream suppliers respectively. Stocking rate averaged 1.37 (s.d. = 1.18) cows per hectare over all farms. Inputs to pasture were universally low and Navua sedge (Cyperus aromaticus) was identified as a major weed. The average amount of supplement fed annually on a grain equivalent basis was 700 (s.d. = 984) kg per cow for bulk milk, 84 (s.d. = 198) kg per cow for canned milk and 146 (s.d. = 542) kg per cow for cream suppliers. The analysis of data from a small group of farms using nitrogen fertiliser indicated that their production levels were higher than the general population. This suggests that there is potential for the Fijian dairy industry to increase milk production through the use of higher inputs to cows and pastures. The regression models relating annual milk production from farms to the two key inputs of number of cows milked and the amount of supplement fed were all significant (p < 0.001). The coefficients of determination for these models ranged from 56.9 to 89.4 percent.

  • The purpose of Total Pollution Load Control at Tributary is to obtain maximum improvement effect of water quality through finding the most impaired section of water-body and establishing the proper control measure of pollutant load. This study was implemented to determine the optimal management of reach, period, condition, watershed, and pollution source and propose appropriate reduction practices using the Load duration curve (LDC) and field monitoring data. With the data of measurement, LDC analysis shows that the most impaired condition is reach V (G4~G5), E group (flow exceedance percentile 90~100%) and winter season. For this reason, winter season and low flow condition should be preferentially considered to restore water quality. The result of pollution analysis for the priority reach and period shows that agricultural nonpoint source loads from onion and garlic culture are most polluting. Therefore, it is concluded that agricultural reuse of surface effluent (storm-water runoff with non-point sources) and low impact farming that includes reducing fertilization and controlling the height of drainage outlet are efficient water quality management for this study watershed.
