  • In the study it is assumed that regional characteristics of each Ri within a Myeon are different in certain degrees. This assumption implies that in some case of rural planning, Goon(county) or Myeon may be inadequate as a planning unit. because regional characteristics within Myeon will vary in a considerable degree. The objective of this study is to obtain knowledge relevant to ascertaining planning units by classifying entire number of Ri in Ansung Goon according to the components of regionality, namely the degree of sustaining agriculture and the degree of urbanizing. There was a significant variation among Ri within a Myeon the degree of sustaining agriculture as well as in the degree of urbanizing. In this study it is implied that rural program planning of Goon as a whole seems to be irrelevant. And planning Myeon level programs needs eventually adjustments in such a way of eliminating areas(Ri) which are of inconsistent character. Some planning such as farming cooperation may be efficient if they are to be undertaken at Ri basis. If the program planning include such activities of marketing and cooperative use of facilities, a group of Ri in consistent nature of regionality can be a unit of planning.

  • U-turn migration is one of the prominent phenomenon after IMF controlled Korean economy. However a number of U-turn migrants were settled in rural area before that time. This paper is aims at studying the socio-economic effects of U-turn migration in rural area. The study results are summarized as follows; First, migrants are relatively young and engaged in overall parts of the farming. The farmer with age under 50 is represented at 71.4% of migrants comparing with 53.7% of those farmers in rural area. Second, owing to the increasing number of U-turn migrants, the decreasing price of rural wages, the decreasing of idle land, and the increasing price of farm land are the outstanding phenomenon at present. Third, even though there are many kinds of supporting systems for U-turn migrants, the systems are not so successfully functioned. For the successful supporting system they must be changed for the individual migrant rather than target group.

  • Oil spills and red tide can be very damaging to the environment and fishery farming. These catastrophic accidents must be detected as quickly as possible. In this paper, we report the results of applying the wavelet transform to SAR or marine radar images for the detection of the boundaries of an oil spill or red tide. The application of the wavelet transform to these phenomena looks quite promising in detecting the boundaries of oil spills and red tide areas.

  • Objective: This paper examines the possible toxicity to immune system in farmers chronically exposed to pesticides. Methods : We compared 43 male farmers exposed to pesticides with 29 male residents who had neither past nor current pesticides exposure. The selected variables for studying immunotoxicity were WBC, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD19, CD56, IgG, IgA, IgM, and IL-2. As part of the baseline questionnaires for the immunotoxicity, subjects were asked about kinds of farming, posticides exposure and medical history. Results : None of the variables for studying immunotoxicity showed statistically significant difference between the two groups. Although the results were not statistically significant, CD4 and the CD4/CD8 ratio decreased and CD8 increased. These effects showed a dose response change with exposure level. In the exposed group, the values of CD3, CD4, CD4/CD8 and CD19 decreased and those of the CD8 and CD56 increased compared to the non-exposed group. Also there was higher prevalence of self-reported disease in the exposed group compared to the non-exposed group. Conclusions: Although statistically significant differences in indices of immunotoxicity in farmers exposed to pesticides were not shown, the results suggest that pesticides may decrease immune function. More advanced test methods for immunotoxicity need to be developed and tested in larger population to detect immunotoxic effects of pesticides.

  • To know if small changes in rearing water temperature and density affect the number of bacterial and fungal colonies in metamorphosed frogs, Dybowski's frog tadpoles were reared from Gosner 25-26 stages at either low ($1^{\circ}C$ low to ambient water temperature), ambient, or high ($1^{\circ}C$ high) water temperature (each 15 tadpoles in 20 L water) condition and at either low (10 tadpoles/20 L water), medium (20 tadpoles), or high (30 tadpoles) density condition. Immediately after metamorphosis, we sampled bacteria and fungi from skin, liver, and heart of six metamorphosed frogs, randomly selected for each treatment group. After separate incubation of bacteria and fungi on 3M Petrifilm plates, we counted the number of bacterial and fungal colonies appeared on the plates and compared the numbers among the temperature and density treatment groups. For temperature treatment, high-temperature group had fewer bacterial colonies, while low-temperature group had more fungal colonies than the other two groups. For density treatment, low-density group had fewer bacterial colonies than the other two groups, but the number of fungal colonies were not different among the groups. Our results suggest that small increased rearing water temperature and lowered rearing density could potentially reduce pathogens in farming frogs.

  • Agricultural Technology Center is an education center to provide agriculturalists with information and technology related with agriculture. As domestic and international environment of agriculture and rural area is changing, functions and roles of Agricultural Technology Center are evolving according to stream of times. In 1995, a new urban and rural complex city was created for symbiotic relationship between city and rural area, As a result, user group of Agricultural Technology Center expanded to nonagriculturalists. Though the change of agricultural extension service is necessary to perform extended functions of rural area and to satisfy needs of new group of users, it is difficult to find enough studies on new functions and roles of Agricultural Technology Center to manage the service change. Therefore, this study is aimed to suggest new functions and roles of Agricultural Technology Center according to stream of times. This study were surveyed through questionnaire targeting users of Namyangju Agricultural Technology Center to compare user group awareness of Agricultural Technology Center in urban and rural complex city. According to this study result, while main purpose of agriculturalists' visiting at Agricultural Technology Center was participating in education programs related with agriculture. In contrast, nonagriculturalists usually visited the center for agricultural understanding, leisure activities, and children education, participating in field work programs. From the survey result of required functions of the center, it was revealed that nonagriculturalists expected urban agriculture, research for living improvement in rural area, adjustment education for returning farmer, and function of farming promotion, comparing agriculturalists. It is verified that this difference of user group awareness reflects the necessity that Agricultural Technology Center should change services and accept increasing use of nonagriculturalists with new functions and roles.

  • The purpose is to figure out the effects of education for environmental pollution prevention through forest experiences on children's nature-friendly attitudes and scientific problem solving ability. To achieve this, an experiment was conducted on total 44 kindergarten children in a class for 5-year-olds, who are classified into experimental group of 22 children(12 male children, 10 female children) and comparative group of 22 children(13 male children, 9 female children), in a C farming village. The results are as follows. First, the change of children's nature-friendly attitudes by group showed that education for environmental pollution prevention through forest experiences had an effect on the improvement of children's nature-friendly attitudes. Second, the change of children's scientific problem solving ability by group showed that education for environmental pollution prevention through forest experiences had an effect on the improvement of children's scientific problem solving ability. This implies that children's forest activities are useful in improving their nature-friendly attitudes and scientific problem solving ability.

  • Objective: This study determined the optimal ratio of whole plant corn silage (WPCS) to corn stover (stems+leaves) silage (CSS) (WPCS:CSS) to reach the greatest profit of dairy farmers and evaluated its consequences with corn available for other purposes, enteric methane production and milk nitrogen efficiency (MNE) at varying milk production levels. Methods: An optimization model was developed. Chemical composition, rumen undegradable protein and metabolizable energy (ME) of WPCS and CSS from 4 cultivars were determined to provide data for the model. Results: At production levels of 0, 10, 20, and 30 kg milk/cow/d, the WPCS:CSS to maximize the profit of dairy farmers was 16:84, 22:78, 44:56, and 88:12, respectively, and the land area needed to grow corn plants was 4.5, 31.4, 33.4, and 30.3 ha, respectively. The amount of corn available (ton DM/ha/yr) for other purposes saved from this land area decreased with higher producing cows. However, compared with high producing cows (30 kg/d milk), more low producing cows (10 kg/d milk) and more land area to grow corn and soybeans was needed to produce the same total amount of milk. Extra land is available to grow corn for a higher milk production, leading to more corn available for other purposes. Increasing ME content of CSS decreased the land area needed, increased the profit of dairy farms and provided more corn available for other purposes. At the optimal WPCS:CSS, MNE and enteric methane production was greater, but methane production per kg milk was lower, for high producing cows. Conclusion: The WPCS:CSS to maximize the profit for dairy farms increases with decreased milk production levels. At a fixed total amount of milk being produced, high producing cows increase corn available for other purposes. At the optimal WPCS:CSS, methane emission intensity is smaller and MNE is greater for high producing cows.
