The gut microbiome of broilers is a critical factor in overall health and productivity. However, high summer temperatures and high stocking density (conventional farm condition) may cause stress to broilers, resulting in an imbalance in the gut microbiome. This study was conducted to compare the gut microbiome of broilers between spring and summer in welfare (Bosung, Jeollanam-do, South Korea) and conventional farms (Jangsu, Jeollabuk-do, South Korea). A total of 31 broilers were assigned to the following groups: conventional farm in spring (n = 8); conventional farm in summer (n = 8); welfare farm in spring (n = 7); welfare farm in summer (n = 8). Cecal digesta were collected from eight broilers from each farm, and microbiome analysis was performed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Beta diversity analysis indicated clear differences in cecal microbiome composition between spring and summerin both welfare and conventional farm. At the phylum level, analysis of conventional farm revealed a higher proportion of Bacteroidetes in spring than in summer. At the genus level, broilers exhibited a higher abundance of Bacteroides and Alistipesin spring compared to summer. In contrast, the difference in microbial flora composition observed in welfare farm was relatively small compared to conventional farm. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that heat stress can negatively affect the caecum microbiome of broilers. However, improvements in the housing environment can mitigate the effects of heat stress.
The annual energy production of Gangwon wind farm was predicted for three consecutive years of 2007, 2008 and 2009 using commercial programs, WindPRO and WindSim which are known to be used the most for wind resource prediction in the world. The predictions from the linear code, WindPRO, were compared with both the actual energy prediction presented in the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) monitoring report of the wind farm and also the predictions from the CFD code, WindSim. The results from WindPRO were close to the actual energy productions and the errors were within 11.8% unlike the expectation. The reason for the low prediction errors was found to be due to the fact that although the wind farm is located in highly complex terrain, the terrain steepness was smaller than a critical angle($21.8^{\circ}$) in front of the wind farm in the main wind direction. Therefore no flow separation was found to occur within the wind farm. The flow separation of the main wind was found to occur mostly behind the wind farm.
As a result of reenforcement of livestock industry licensing and livestock related vehicle registration system, pig farm are mandatory for setting stop bar before pig farm entrance and maintaining the records of inlet and outlet to and from pig farm. Also, the first step to the pig farm biosecurity is the control of entrance human, vehicles, animals and the related records including entrance and sterilization. In this study, the pig farm entrance control system using RFID technology and web-server system was developed. For human entrance, contact type RFID reading system(13.56MHz) was developed. And the 900MHz RFID system was used to detect vehicle entrance. The test result shows that system actuating, recognition, saving records to the web server was successful. Then, the full system of human entrance recording unit, vehicle entrance recording unit, entrance control system, human sterilizing booth containing a tablet for inputting visitor's record and sterilization record was tested. The records were wrote to web server DB through the data management web-program. Performance test shows the entrance control and data management in server was successfully operated.
The ecological changes in the ocean due to the drastic global warming require that action be taken to sustain the productivity of fisheries. Proper ocean facilities could help prevent the loss of the expenditures made on marine aquaculture and reduce the related compensation for various ocean conditions. The aim of this study was to develop a floating ocean wave-breaker using an eco-friendly concrete and conducting a site survey, a structural analysis, and a test of towing the tank. As a result, the wave at the fish farm would be reduced. The results of the holding power of anchors and the capability of moving the floating structures were considered in the design of the wave-breaker. The analyses of the material properties of concrete and the steel structures, as well as the CAPEX and OPEX analyses of the manufacturing and operation processes confirmed the superiority of the floating concrete wave-breaker. In particular, this study demonstrated that the concrete floating breakwater can protect the fish farm against typhoons and reverse-waves, thereby reducing losses of the fish.

Feasibility tests for the hydraulic fracturing were conducted in order to secure additional saline groundwater for irrigating to the land-based aquaculture farm. Two boreholes were placed to the aquaculture farm A and B, respectively. A hydraulic fracturing using single packer was applied to major fracture zones within two boreholes. To identify effects of hydraulic fracturing on securing additional saline groundwater, some selective methods including well logging methods, pumping tests, and groundwater quality analysis were commonly applied to the boreholes before and after the hydraulic fracturing. Enlarging/creating fracture zones, increasing water contents in bedrock near boreholes, and increasing transmissivity were observed after the hydraulic fracturing. Even though the hydraulic fracturing could be an alternative to secure additional saline groundwater to the land-based aquaculture farm, salinity of the groundwater did not meet optimal thresholds for each fingerling in two farms: Fresh submarine groundwater discharge flowed the more into borehole of the farm A that resulted in decreasing a salinity value. Increased saline groundwater quantity in the borehole of the farm B rarely affect to the salinity. Although salinity problem of groundwater limited its direct use for the farms, the mixing with seawater could be effectively used for the fingerlings during the early stage. A horizontal radial collector well placed in the alluvial layer could be an alternative for the farms as well.
Tidal flats develop along the south coast ofthe Korean peninsula. These areas are famous for sea farming. Specially, strong and coherent radar backscattering signals are observed over oyster sea farms that consist of artificial structures. Tide height in oyster farm is possible to measure by using interferometric phase and intensity of SAR data. It is assumed that the radar signals from oyster farm could be considered as double-bouncing returns by vertical and horizontal bars. But, detailed backscattering mechanism and polarimetric characteristics in oyster farm had not been well studied. We could not demonstrate whether the assumption is correct or not and exactly understand what the properties of back scattering were in oyster farm without full polarimetric data. The results of AIRSAR L-band POLSAR data, experiments in laboratory and JERS-l images are discussed. We carried out an experiment simulating a target structure using vector network analyser (Y.N.A.) in an anechoic chamber at Niigata University. Radar returns from vertical poles are stronger than those from horizontal poles by 10.5 dB. Single bounce components were as strong as double bounce components and more sensitive to antenna look direction. Double bounce components show quasi-linear relation with height of vertical poles. As black absorber replaced AI-plate in bottom surface, double bounce in vertical pole decreased. It is observed that not all oyster farms are characterized by double bounced scattering in AIRSAR data. The image intensity of the double bounce dominant oyster farm was investigated with respect to that of oyster farm dominated by single bounce in JERS-l SAR data. The image intensity model results in a correlation coefficient (R2 ) of 0.78 in double bounce dominant area while that of 0.54 in single bouncing dominant area. This shows that double bounce dominant area should be selected for water height measurement using In8AR technique.

The objective of this study was to compare the farm efficiency of members of cooperative firms with that of non-members in Korea. Data were collected from 27 farms members of three cooperatives and 13 non-member farms, based on the managerial achievements of 1999. For the analysis, the data were divided into three different farming types: type I and II of member farms and non-member farms. Economic analysis were implemented using DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis). Major findings was as follows. Total average technology efficiency was 0.782, which implies that there still remains 21.8% of improvement possibility. Among the three types, type I showed the highest technology efficiency of 0.9055, while type II and non-member farms showed 0.7670 and 0.7171, respectively. This means that these farms have relatively high potential improved. Also, comparing technology efficiency by dividing into pure technology and scale efficiency, all type of the farms exhibit a higher pure technology efficiency compared to scale efficiency. Therefore, to improve current technology efficiency, farms need to focus more on pure technology efficiency improvement. Meanwhile, profit analysis based on farm size indicate that most of the farms demonstrated the increasing-return-to-scale, which means it is necessary to extend the farm size to improve technical efficiency. Type I member farms achieve higher profit and efficiency than other two types and relatively higher producer prices through introducing cooperative sorting, grading and packing. Also, these labor saving technologies increased farm size.

This paper describes to analyze the underwater ambient noise and biological noise of cultivating fishes in the fish farm cages at the seawater Tongyong-kun, KyongNam and lake of Chungju, Chech'on, ChungBuk from 10 to 19 Oct. 1997, in order to find out the characteristics of these noises. The results obtained were as follows; (1) The ambient noise around the fish farm cages at lake of Chungju was 10~200Hz frequency range, 70~105dB spectrum level. The central frequency was 50~70Hz, changing of ambient noise was getting bigger than 10~200Hz in 200Hz~2kKz frequency by wind, water current. (2) The frequency of noise source around the fish farm cage at the seawater of Tongyong-kun was 20~200Hz, spectrum level was 80~100dB while feed factory was working around the fish farm cage. When feed factory did not work, noise source was 10~600Hz frequency range, 70~90dB spectrum level. It was 10dB less than that of while feed factory was working, and then the central frequency was 70Hz. (3) The vessel noise of excursion ship had changed largely at 100dB spectrum level in 10~500Hz frequency band, and the fishing boat had 20Hz~2kHz frequency range. (4) The biological noise in the fish farm cage at lake of Chungju, which was feeding of Cyprinus carpio, 2was 10~30Hz frequency, 70~104dB spectrum level. The central frequency was 75Hz. The biological noises in the fish farm cage at the seawater of Tongyong-kun, which were feeding and swimming noise, had very different spectrum pattern by species, and the frequency band was 10~800Hz.
Commercial wind farm design tools and the national wind map are used to determine the implementation potential of offshore wind power in Korea in this study. For this, the territorial waters of Korea were divided into nine analysis regions and a commercial CFD code was used to obtain wind resource maps at 100m A.S.L. which is the hub height of a 5MW wind turbine used in this study. With the wind resource obtained, factors including water depth, distance from substations, minimum and maximum capacity of a wind farm, distance between turbines and wind farms were considered to determine wind power potential. Also, the conservation areas, military zones, ports, fishing grounds, etc. were considered and excluded. As the result, a total capacity of 6,720 MW was found to be the implementation potential and this corresponds to $3.38MW/km^2$ in API. Also if the distance from the substation is not considered, the potential increased to be 10,040 MW. This offshore wind farm potential is considered enough to satisfy the target of wind farm capacities in the 7th national plan for electricity demand and supply.
This study evaluates wind farm efficiency at Haengwon in Jeju Island. The actual energy production at Haengwon wind farm is compared with the estimated energy production based on Korean wind map which is developed at the National Institute of Meteorological Research/KMA. The validation of wind map at Gujwa located near the Haengwon wind farm shows that the wind speed is overestimated. The diurnal variation of wind speed shows a maximum value in the afternoon due to the effect of sea-land breeze. The ratio of the actual energy production at Haengwon wind farm and the estimated energy production based on the Korean wind map is 24.8%, while the distribution of energy frequency is similar each other. The difference of energy production is caused by mechanical error of the turbine and the overestimation of the simulated wind map. This study will contribute to the repowering of turbines for improving the efficiency of wind farm in the future.
