This paper presents measured deformation of geomembrane installed on slopes of a landfill. The layout of geosynthetics installed on landfill slopes as required by regulations is composed of, in typical, geocomposite, geomembrane, geosynthetic clay liner in turn from the slope. An effort was made to better understand the sources of external forces acting on geosynthetics and their interactions. The results of a field observation indicated that tensile stresses induced on geomebrane were far less in magnitude than predicted by the design method employing mass equilibrium of waste. This was mainly because external forces acting on slopes were not transferred from geocomposite to underlying geomembrane. A simple, but rather rational method for assessing the stability of geosynthetics against tensile stresses was proposed. This method is based on a hypothesis that external forces acting on geosynthetics are the results of downdrag of waste during waste compaction.

The evaluation of a zonal RANS-LES approach is documented for the prediction of broadband noise generated by the flow past unmodified and serrated airfoil trailing edges at a high Reynolds number. A multi-domain decomposition is considered, where the acoustic sources are resolved with a LES sub-domain embedded in the RANS domain. A stochastic vortex method is used to generate synthetic turbulent perturbations at the RANS-LES interface. The simulations are performed with a general-purpose unstructured control-volume code FLUENT. The far-field noise is calculated using the aeroacoustic analogy of Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings. The results of the simulation are validated through the full-scaled wind turbine acoustic measurements. It is found that the present approach is adequate for predicting noise radiation of serrated trailing edge flow for low noise rotor system.

SCUBA-2 North Ecliptic Pole survey, one of the ongoing JCMT large programs, is designed to obtain 850 ㎛ imaging data over ~4 deg2 around the NEP based on the AKARI NEP-Wide survey. By August 2019, the program is 50 % complete in terms of observing time, increasing the submillimeter coverage by a factor of 2 with the comparable depth. The rms measured in the deepest center is 0.92 mJy/beam, slightly above the 850 ㎛ confusion limit. With 4 σ detection, the source count is 50 % complete at 9 mJy. The surface density of submillimeter galaxies at this flux limit is 200 deg-2. Multi-wavelength identification of the 850 ㎛ sources was done through the likelihood analysis based on the far-infrared (250-500 ㎛), mid-infrared (18 ㎛), near-infrared (2-4 ㎛), and optical (i-band) source catalog. We are going to present morphologies and physical properties of 850 ㎛ selected submillimeter galaxies with the help of ancillary multi-wavelength datasets over the NEP area.
This study presents a macro-modeling procedure for nonlinear finite element analysis of reinforced and prestressed concrete panels under blast loading. The analysis procedure treats cracked concrete as an orthotropic material based on a smeared rotating crack model within the context of total-load secant stiffness-based formulation. A direct time integration method compatible with the analysis formulation is adapted to solve the dynamic equation of motion. Considerations are made to account for strain rate effects. The analysis procedure is verified by modeling 14 blast tests from various sources reported in the literature including a blast simulation contest. The analysis results are compared against those obtained from experiments, simplified single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) methods, and sophisticated hydrocodes. It is demonstrated that the smeared crack macro-modeling approach is a viable alternative analysis procedure that gives more information about the structural behavior than SDOF methods, but does not require detailed micro-modeling and extensive material characterization typically needed with hydrocodes.

The AKARI North Ecliptic Pole Deep Field is a natural location to accomplish deep extragalactic surveys. It is supported by comprehensive ancillary data extending from radio to X-ray wavelengths, which have been used to classify radio sources as radio-loud and radio-quiet objects and to create a catalogue of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). This has been achieved by using a radio-optical classification and colour-colour diagrams rather than the more usual way based on spectroscopy Furthermore, we explore whether this technique can be extended by using a far-Infrared (FIR) colour-colour diagram which has been used to identify 268 high redshift candidates.

In general, a cooling tower has two major noise sources, one is the fan and the other is the falling water. The fan noise is produced by passage of its blades through the air and radiates from the fan stack. Noises from the falling water are caused by splashing and dropping of water cascading over the internal filler of the cooling tower and into the basin and radiate from the louvered face. In this paper, the noise measurements and its frequency analysis are carried out for the locations facing the louvered side and near the fan stack referring the related code and standards in order to study the noise characteristics of the induced-draft cooling tower, especially for the buildings. As a result, it is found that for every doubling of distance from the noise source the noise level decreases by 2~4dBA in the near field with reflect surfaces and decreases by about 6dBA also in the far field without reflect surfaces. As a supplement to the noise measurements, a computer program with simple algorithm is developed in order to estimate the noise level at a distance from the cooling tower, so that the user could apply and modify it for the particular boundary conditions easily.

Sound generation and radiation from the duct-rotor system are calculated numerically. The wake geometries of a two-bladed rotor are calculated by using a time-marching fiee-wake method without a non-physical model of the far wake. Acoustic free field due to a rotating rotor is obtained by Lowson's equation. Using Kirchhoff source, rotating sources are modeled as stationary ones and can be inserted in the thin body boundary element method. The Kirchhoff source is validated through calculation of acoustic pressure due to a rotating point force. The thin body boundary element method (thin body BEM) is validated through calculation of acoustic radiation of ducted dipole. Using Kirchhoff source and thin body BEM, acoustic radiation of a ducted rotating source is calculated. Acoustic shielding is observed by inserting a duct and shows different phenomena at each major frequency. Acoustic radiation of a real duct-rotor system is also calculated using this method and the ducted acoustic field is significantly different from rotor only.
This study investigates the influence of loading and inflow conditions on tidal turbine performance from a hydrodynamic and hydroacoustic point of view. A boundary element method is utilized for the former to investigate turbine performance at various loading conditions under zero/non-zero yaw inflow. The boundary element method is selected as it has been selected, tested, and validated to be computationally efficient and accurate for marine hydrodynamic problems. Once the hydrodynamic solutions are obtained, such as the time-dependent surface pressures and periodic motion of the turbine blade, they are taken as the known noise sources for the subsequence hydroacoustic analysis based on the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings formulation given in a form proposed by Farassat. This formulation is coupled with the boundary element method to fully consider the three-dimensional shape of the turbine and the speed of sound in the acoustic analysis. For validations, a model turbine is taken from a reference paper, and the comparison between numerical predictions and experimental data reveals satisfactory agreement in hydrodynamic performance. Importantly, this study shows that the noise patterns and sound pressure levels at both the near- and far-field are affected by different loading conditions and sensitive to the inclination imposed in the incoming flow.

This article presents the statistical characteristics of elastic floor acceleration spectra that represent the peak response demand of non-structural components attached to a nonlinear supporting frame. For this purpose, a set of stiff and flexible general moment resisting frames with periods of 0.3-3.6 sec. are analyzed using forty-nine near-field strong ground motion records. Peak accelerations are derived for each single degree of freedom non-structural component, supported by the above mentioned frames, through a direct-integration time-history analysis. These accelerations are obtained by Floor Acceleration Response Spectrum (FARS) method. They are statistically analyzed in the next step to achieve a better understanding of their height-wise distributions. The factors that affect FARS values are found in the relevant state of the art. Here, they are summarized to evaluate the amplification and/or reduction of FARS values especially when the supporting structures undergo inelastic behavior. The properties of FARS values are studied in three regions: long-period, fundamental-period and short-period. Maximum elastic acceleration response of non-structural component, mounted on inelastic frames, depends on the following factors: inelasticity intensity and modal periods of supporting structure; natural period, damping ratio and location of non-structural component. The FARS values, corresponded to the modal periods of supporting structure, are strongly reduced beyond elastic domain. However, they could be amplified in the transferring period domain between the mentioned modal periods. In the next step, the amplification and/or reduction of FARS values, caused by inelastic behavior of supporting structure, are calculated. A parameter called the response acceleration reduction factor ($R_{acc}$), has been previously used for far-field earthquakes. The feasibility of extending this parameter for near-field motions is focused here, suggested repeatedly in the relevant sources. The nonlinearity of supporting structure is included in ($R_{acc}$) for better estimation of maximum non-structural component absolute acceleration demand, which is ordinarily neglected in the seismic design provisions.
