Methods: The data in this study came from the Korea Youth Panel Survey Data (N=3,449) for 2005~2007. To investigate the causal relationship between each variable presented in the research model, structural equation modeling (SEM) was carried out by using AMOS 7.0. And all data were analyzed by using SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: The main analytical results of this study were as follows; First, the family function made a positive impact on the self-esteem of adolescents. Second, the severe functional deficiency in family appeared to have a negative effect on the suicidal inclination and depression of adolescents. Third, the higher the adolescents' self-esteem, the lower depression and suicidal ideation. Fourth, the more severe the depression, the higher occurrence of suicidal inclination. • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the resilience of adult children of alcoholics (ACOA) who are college students, and examine factors contributing to their resilience. Methods: A total of 459 college students from a university in Incheon, participated in this study. Data were collected between April 6 to 30, 2010 using the Korean version of the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST-K), CAGE, Social Support, Self-Esteem, Family Adaptability and Cohesion, and Resilience measurements. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: Overall, ACOA group showed lower scores of resilience, social support, self-esteem and family adaptability and cohesion compared to non-ACOA group. Resilience among the ACOA group showed significant relationships with self-esteem (r=.53, p<.001), social support (r=.43, p<.001), and family adaptability and cohesion (r=.25, p<.013). Multiple regression analysis showed that 45% of the variance for resilience in the ACOA group was accounted for by age, gender, social support, self-esteem, and religion. Conclusion: The results of the study show that self-esteem and social support are important determinants of resilience in ACOA, thus it is recommend that further resilience training programs for ACOA be developed to enhance their social support and self-esteem, and ultimately to increase their resilience.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of horticultural therapy on self-esteem of women with hearing impairment. Ten women with hearing impairment registered in the Mokpo Branch of the Korean Association of the Deaf participated in the horticultural therapy programs (HTP) for self-esteem. The self-esteem scale was used to evaluate the effects of the programs and scores were compared to determine the difference before and after the programs. Self-esteem was improved in all 10 subjects, and its mean value increased with statistical significance from 22.5 points before the programs to 29.8 points after the programs. The programs preferred by women with hearing impairment included 'making a centerpiece using scented candles and flowers', 'packing and planting pot spray chrysanthemum', 'making a topiary', 'planting Hedera helix', and 'planting cyclamen'. Therefore, it was suggested that self-esteem of women with hearing impairment were improved by increasing social and family support, emotional stability, positive feedback, and self-expression through horticultural therapy programs.

In this study, university students' self-differentiation and self-esteem were found to be important variables having influence upon mental health, and self-differentiation had indirect influence upon mental health through self-esteem. Counselling intervention strategies should be established considering self-differentiation and self-esteem of the students who complained about their maladjusted emotion and human relation problems at schools. • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effective variables which influence family strengths. In particular, influencing variables were analyzed according to sex, generation, and family pattern. There were 703 participants aged over 20 years in Gwangju and Seoul. All participants completed a questionnaire and the data were analyzed using SPSS. The results were as follows: 1. The average scores of family strengths were higher than the median. Regarding subdimensions, 'value system sharing' had the lowest score. 2. Family strengths were related to its subdimension and some variables. 3. Family strengths were influenced by living condition, self-esteem, depression, the cognition of family function, and family value orientations. However, the influencing variables were different according to sex, generation, and family patterns. In conclusion, in order to improve family strengths, it is necessary to develop 'value system sharing', enhance self-esteem, and reduce depression. Further, when we deal with family strengths, it is necessary to vary methodology.

  • Longitudinal studies have shown mixed findings on the association between body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem among adolescents. This study examined the longitudinal, reciprocal influences between body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem among Korean pre- and early adolescents by using nationally representative longitudinal panel data from the Korean Youth Panel Study (KYPS). Analyses based on 2,230 participants indicated that girls' body image dissatisfaction was significantly higher than boys'. The trajectory of body image dissatisfaction increased sharply during pre- and early adolescence, but stabilized afterwards for both boys and girls. Self-esteem deteriorated rapidly initially, but began to recover as adolescent girls and boys matured. Structural equation modeling showed that reciprocal influences between body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem were detected for boys. Body image dissatisfaction among girls predicted self-esteem during the entire period, while the opposite direction from self-esteem to body image dissatisfaction emerged two years later. The present study found that, during pre- and early adolescence, body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem develop in a circular fashion by forming a vicious cycle. Implications for the development of intervention and prevention programs are discussed in consideration of age and gender.
