  • The family tree is one of the key elements of humanities classics research and is very important for accurately understanding people or families. In this paper, we introduce a method for automatically generating a family tree using information on interpersonal relationships (IIPR) from the Korean Classics Database (KCDB) and visualize interpersonal searches within a family tree using data-driven document JavaScript (d3.js). To date, researchers of humanities classics have wasted considerable time manually drawing family trees to understand people's influence relationships. An automatic family tree builder analyzes a database that visually expresses the desired family tree. Because a family tree contains a large amount of data, we analyze the performance and bottlenecks according to the amount of data for visualization and propose an optimal way to construct a family tree. To this end, we create an n-ary tree with fake data, visualize it, and analyze its performance using simulation results.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of family mealtime on the childrens' school adaptation. This study uses data from the 2012 Survey on Child Education and School Involvement of Parents by the Center for Family-School Partnership Policy Research at Seoul National University. Survey data was collected from 1500 parents with school-aged children. For the data analysis, Chi sqaure test and hierarchical linear regression analyses were conducted. The results of these analyses showed that the numbers of family meals shared averaged 4.26 times per week for breakfast and 4.33 times per week for dinner. There were significant differences in the number of family meals shared together according to school level, residence area, and parent employment status, and household income. In addition, childrens' school adaptation was significantly different depending on school level, parent gender, parent education, and parent employment status. Finally, according to the hierarchical regression analyses, the number of family meals shared significantly predicted childrens' school adaptation. The greater number of family meals shared, the stronger the childrens' school adaptation. These results indicate that family mealtime has a positive effect on childrens' school adaptation. This study suggests that family mealtime is an indicator of family strength and it needs to guarantee family shared time at least to have a dinner together. This study could provide grounds for making family policy and education policy in order to guarantee family shared time.

Method: This study was conducted within the feminist perspectives using qualitative secondary data. Ten secondary data conveying self reflective contents were selected from the 25 original data obtained in 1999 to 2000. Result: Six themes that emerged from the qualitative thematic content analysis were; androcentric view of family caregiving, undervalued family caregiving by the family members, Self rationalization in the context of family caregiving, family-centric care mechanism, exemplary caring within the family context, and inter-familial relationships among women. • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the perspectives of gender and role in the family for nurses' work-family balance. Method: Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 14 married nurses having children, who were selected through convenience sampling and purposive sampling from November 1, 2011 to January 20, 2012. The data were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. Results: The common themes resulted from data analysis included following traditional gender roles, giving up any expectation of spouse's role, coordinating the division of family roles, and refusing to stick to gender roles. The age of nurse, family background of husband, and social-economic contexts were essential to explain the couple dynamics. Conclusions: Nurses who received private family support were stably leading a work-family balance, yet unable to change the gender structure of spouse for the work-family balance. On the other hand, young nurses who were unable to get any support, had a tendency of cooperating with their spouses and adopting more negotiable and pragmatic approach to work-family balance.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study, which was guided by the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment, and Adaptation, was twofold: (a) to explore family and parental adaptation and factors influencing family adaptation in Korean families of children with Down syndrome (DS) through a quantitative methodology and (b) to understand the life with a Korean child with DS through a qualitative method. Methods: A mixed-methods design was adopted. A total of 147 parents of children with DS completed a package of questionnaires, and 19 parents participated in the in-depth interviews. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using stepwise multiple regression and content analysis respectively. Results: According to the quantitative data, the overall family adaptation scores indicated average family functioning. Financial status was an important variable in understanding both family and parental adaptation. Family adaptation was best explained by family problem solving and coping communication, condition management ability, and family hardiness. Family strains and family hardiness were the family factors with the most influence on parental adaption. Qualitative data analysis showed that family life with a child with DS encompassed both positive and negative aspects and was expressed with 5 themes, 10 categories, and 16 sub-categories. Conclusion: Results of this study expand our limited knowledge and understanding concerning families of children with DS in Korea and can be used to develop effective interventions to improve the adaptation of family as a unit as well as parental adaptation.

  • A cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational design was employed in this study. The main purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between female adolescents' mental health and their perception of family characteristics, such as family adaptability, family cohesion, family type, and family satisfaction, The theoretical rationale for this study is the 3-Dimensionl Circumplex Model that was formulated by Olson, et al. With respect to method, a structured questionnaire was employed to obtain the data. A total of 199 female students(high school second year) were recruited by convenience sampling. Data for this study were collected in October 1994 after a pilot study and pretest of the tools. The research tool used the following four self-report research types : Youth Self-Report (YSR) developed by Achenbach and Edelbrock, Family Adaptability & Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES) III, Family Satisfaction(FS) developed by Olson, et al. and a Demographic Data Sheet. The resulting data were processed using an SPSS PC for a Pearson prod uct-moment correlation coefficient, ANOVA. A linear relationship were found between female students' mental health and their perceived family cohesion(r=-.2237, p<.001), and family satisfaction(r=-.3951, p<.001), but no significant correlations was found between female students' mental health and their perceived adaptability. These findings demonstrated that family cohesion, family type, and family satisfaction were more powerful predictors than family adaptability. This study contributes to nursing practice by demonstrating the usefulness of YSR to differentiate deviant behavior in youth and also by providing nursing interventions designed to promote female mental health.
