A Remote Applications Monitoring System using JINI (JINI 기반 원격 응용 모니터링 시스템)

  • In general, remote monitoring systems monitor the status of distributed hosts and/or applications in real-time for diverse managerial purposes. However, most of the extant systems have a few undesirable problems. First of all, they are platform-dependent and are not resilient to network and/or host failures. Moreover, they normally focus on the resource usage trends in monitored hosts, rather than on the status change of the applications running on them. We strongly believe that the latter has more direct and profound effect on the resource usage patterns on each host. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of the Remote Applications Monitoring System (RAMS) that enables us to effectively manage distributed applications through a real-time monitoring of their respective resource usages. The RAMS is a centralized system that consists of many distributed agents and a single centralized manager. An agent on each host is in charge of collecting and reporting the status of local applications. The manager handles agent registration and provides a central access point to the selection and monitoring of distributed applications. The salient features of the system include robustness and portability The adoption of JINI greatly facilitates an automatic recovery from partial network failure and host failure.

EFFECTS OF SURFACE TREATMENTS AND STORAGE CONDITIONS ON TARGIS/DENTIN BOND STRENGTH (Targis 표면처리가 상아질과의 전단결합강도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate shear bond strength according to difference in Targis surface treatment and storage condition. 140 non-carious extracted human molars and Targis D210(Ivoclar, Liechtenstein) were used in the present study and were divided into 7 experimental groups respectively according to surface treatment of Targis. Group 1 ; No treatment, Group 2 ; $50{\mu}m$ aluminium oxide blasting, Group 3 ; 4% HF etching for 3 minutes, Group 4 ; 4% HF etching after blasting, Group 5 ; silane treatment after blasting, Group 6 ; silane treatment after 4% HF etching, Group 7 ; silane treatment after blasting and 4% HF etching. In Each group, one half of 20 specimens was stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and the other half was stored at atmosphere for 24 hours respectively. Dentin surface was etched with 10% $H_3PO_4$ for 15 seconds and luting cement(Variolink II, Vivadent, Liechtenstein) was applied by manufacturer's recommendation. Shear bond strength for each group was then measured. To examine the failure patterns after shear bond test and to observe the change after surface treatment of Targis. Specimens were fabricated and observed under the SEM. Statistical analysis was performed by One Way ANOVA test and t-test. The results were as follows ; 1. The shear bond strength of the groups stored in water significantly lower than that of groups stored at atmosphere (P<0.05). 2. There was no significant difference in shear bond strength in groups stored in water (P>0.05). 3. The shear bond strength without surface treatment of Targis were lowest among all experimental groups in atmosphere condition(P<0.05). 4. There was no significant difference in bond strength between groups using the silane or not(P>0.05). 5. The groups treated by blasting, hydrofluoric acid and silane sequentially showed highest bond strength than that of other groups in atmosphere condition, but there was no significant difference(P>0.05). 6 The proportions of the specimens showing the mixed fracture failure were 20% in HF etching group and blasting + HF group, 40% in blasting + HF + silane group in atmosphere condition. All the specimens stored in water showed adhesive fracture failure.

Analysis of ROX Index, ROX-HR Index, and SpO2/FIO2 Ratio in Patients Who Received High-Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (고유량 비강 캐뉼라 산소요법을 받은 소아중환자실 환아의 ROX Index와 ROX-HR Index 및 SpO2/FIO2 Ratio분석)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the use of the respiratory rate oxygenation (ROX) index, ROX-heart rate (ROX-HR) index, and saturation of percutaneous oxygen/fraction of inspired oxygen ratio (SF ratio) to predict weaning from high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) in patients with respiratory distress in a pediatric intensive care unit. Methods: A total of 107 children admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit were enrolled in the study between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2021. Data on clinical and personal information, ROX index, ROX-HR index, and SF ratio were collected from nursing records. The data were analyzed using an independent t-test, χ2 test, Mann-Whitney U test, and area under the curve (AUC). Results: Seventy-five (70.1%) patients were successfully weaned from HFNC, while 32 (29.9%) failed. Considering specificity and sensitivity, the optimal cut off points for predicting treatment success and failure of HFNC oxygen therapy were 6.88 and 10.16 (ROX index), 5.23 and 8.61 (ROX-HR index), and 198.75 and 353.15 (SF ratio), respectively. The measurement of time showed that the most significant AUC was 1 hour before HFNC interruption. Conclusion: The ROX index, ROX-HR index, and SF ratio appear to be promising tools for the early prediction of treatment success or failure in patients initiated on HFNC for acute hypoxemic respiratory failure. Nurses caring for critically ill pediatric patients should closely observe and periodically check their breathing patterns. It is important to continuously monitor three indexes to ensure that ventilation assistance therapy is started at the right time.

Experimental Study on Establishing Measurement Management Criteria for Soil Slope Failure by Using Reduction-Scale and Full-Scale Slope Experiments: Based on Matric Suction (소형 및 실규모 급경사지 실험을 통한 계측관리기준 개발을 위한 실험적 연구: 모관흡수력을 기준으로)

  • Due to South Korea's concentrated summer rainfall, constituting 70% of the annual total, landslides frequently occur during the rainy season, necessitating accurate prediction methods to mitigate associated damage. In this study, a reduced-scale and full-scale slope was configured using weathered granite soil to find the possibility of establishing measurement management criterias through landslide reproduction. The experiment focused on matric suction, analyzing changes in ground properties and failure patterns caused by rainfall infiltration. Subsequently, an unsaturated infinite slope stability analysis was conducted. By calculating the failure time when the safety factor falls below 1 for each experiment, landslide prediction was demonstrated to be possible, approximately 17 minutes prior for the reduction-scale experiment and 6.5 hours for the full-scale experiment. These findings provide useful data for establishing Korean soil slope measurement management criteria that consider the characteristics of weathered granite soil.

EFFECTS OF ACID ETCHING TIMES ON ENAMEL SURFACE MORPHOLOGY AND SHEAR BOND STRENGTH OF ORTHODONTIC ATTACHMENT TO ENAMEL (산부식시간이 법랑질 표면 부식형태와 교정장치의 전단접착강도에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of different acid etching times on the enamel surface morphology, shear bond strength and debonding failure mode of orthodontic attachment. Ninety six extracted human mandibular premolars were divided into eight groups of twelve teeth. The buccal surfaces were etched with $37\%$, phosphoric acid for 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 seconds, respectively. Two teeth from each group were used for scanning electron microscope examination. On the etched buccal surfaces of remaining teeth, orthodontic attachments(lingual buttons) were bonded with light cured orthodontic adhesive. Twenty foot hours after bonding, a Instron universal testing machine was used to determine shear bond strength of orthodontic attachment to enamel. After debonding, bases of orthodontic attachments and enamel surfaces were examined under stereoscopic microscope to determine failure mode. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out with one nay ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test The results were as follows; 1. There was no statistically significant difference in shear bond strengths between the various etching times(p<0.05). 2. The failure modes of orthodontic attachments had some differences. In 5, 10 and 15 seconds etching groups, the percentage of adhesive/enamel interface failure was higher than that of adhesive/attachment interface failure. On the contrary, in 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 seconds etching groups, the results were reversed. 3. The etching patterns of enamel surfaces had a great variation. So, we could not find any correlation between etching pattern and bond strength. 4. The findings in this study indicate that in vitro reduction of the etching me to 5 seconds maintains clinically acceptable bond strength. However, further study is required to determine the cause of failure mode in 5, 10 and 15 seconds groups.

Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy in Locally Advanced Esophageal Cancer (국소적으로 진행된 식도암에서 동시항암화학방사선치료의 결과)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the results of local control, survival rate, prognostic factors, and failure pattern in locally advanced esophageal cancer. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively studied 50 patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy at Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center from June of 1999 to August of 2008. Seven patients with inappropriate data were excluded, and 43 patients were analyzed. There were 39 males and four female patients ranging in age from 43 to 78 years (median, 63 years). There were seven patients with stage IIA and 36 with stage III. Irradiation from 46 Gy to 63 Gy (median, 54 Gy) was carried out 5 days per week, 1.8 Gy once a day. There were eight patients with neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, and we mostly used 5-fluorouracil, cisplatin with 3 cycles for concurrent chemotherapy. The range of follow up periods was from 2 to 82 months (median, 15.5). Results: There were nine patients that exhibited a cornplete response, 23 that exhibited a partial response, 9 that exhibited no response, and 2 that exhibited disease progression. The median survival time was 15 months. Two-year and 5-year survival rates were 36.5% and 17.3%, respectively. Two-year and 5-year disease-free survival rates were 32.4% and 16%, respectively. Treatment failure occurred in 22 patients (51.2%). Patterns of failure were categorized as local failure in 18 patients and distant metastasis in four patients. In a univariate analysis for prognostic factors related to overall survival and disease-free survival, the hemoglobin levels during chemoradiotherapy (${\geq}$ 12 vs. <12, p=0.02(p=0.1) and the response to the treatments (CR/PR vs. NR/PD, p=0.002/p< 0.0001) were statistically significant. In a multivariate analysis, only response to the treatments was revealed to be statistically significant. There was no statistical significance associated with patient age, gender, disease stage, T-stage, smoking history, tumor location, or neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. Conclusion: Our survival rate was similar to those of other institutions. Local recurrence was the main reason for failure. It is suggested that further prospective studies should be performed to improve local control.

Energy-Efficient Routing Algorithm with Guaranteed Message Transmission Reliability for Wireless Sensor Networks (무선 센서 네트워크를 위한 에너지 효율적인 메시지 전송 신뢰도 보장 라우팅 알고리즘)

  • This paper proposes a k-disjoint-path routing algorithm that provides energy efficient and reliable message transmission in wireless sensor networks. The proposed algorithm sends messages through a single path without the occurrence of critical events. However, it sends through k disjoint paths(k>1) under the occurrence of critical events. The proposed algorithm detects the occurrence of critical events by monitoring changing data patterns, and calculates k from a well-defined fault model and the target-delivery ratio. Our simulations reveal that the proposed algorithm is more resilient to node failure than other routing algorithms, and it also decreases energy consumption and reduces the average delay much more than multi-path and path-repair algorithms.

  • Last blades of LP turbine in nuclear power plant are the highly damaged part and suffered from nozzle steam impulses during the turbine operation. Nozzle impulse is known as a common cause of damage or failure in the turbine blade and results from steam flow distortions due to uneven steam flow patterns between the stationary blade vanes. If impulse force was continuously acting on the blade for a long time, crack or wear will occur in weak parts such as root. So, it is important to know variation of nozzle impulse during the blade moving. But there is no way to measure and estimate the magnitude and direction of nozzle impulse. Therefore, this study was performed to know the variation of nozzle impulse force according to the positions of the blade and to obtain blade equivalent force and torque. This results can be used for blade stress estimation.

Modality in Korean Learners' Spoken Interlanguage

  • This study examines spoken interlanguage of Korean learners of English, focusing on the distribution of modal verbs and devices of epistemic modality. (Semi-) spontaneous speech data were collected from four students participating in a self-organized study group for seven months, which produced a corpus of about 55,000 words. The data analysis reveals the following: 1) The frequency of the modal verbs produced by the learners was lower than that of native speakers; 1.99 vs. 2.32 tokens per 100 words. The range of the modal verbs used by the learners was also very limited, with over-reliance on can (43%). 2) The grammatical categories of the devices marking epistemic modality were in the order of adverbs, lexical verbs, and modal verbs, with a high frequency of a few items in each category. 3) Lexical items conveying certainty and modals of obligation were preferred over markers of weaker commitment, resulting in speech characterized by firmer assertions and a more authoritative tone, a potential cause for pragmatic failure. 4) A weak developmental change was observed in the frequency of modal verbs, but not in their functions over the seven month period of data collection. L1 influence, L2 proficiency, mode of communication, and instruction effects are discussed as possible variables involved in the distribution patterns observed.

Seismic Behavior of Concrete Cylinders Reinforced by Outside Lateral Hoops (외측 횡 구속된 콘크리트 공시체의 내진 거동)

  • This paper investigates experimentally the confinement effect on concrete. For this purpose, outside lateral reinforcement members made of stainless steel and GFRP were employed. Then, uniaxial compressive tests on concrete cylinders incorporating the members were conducted. A total of 30 cylinder specimens, specifically, 6 unconfined specimens, 12 specimens confined by stainless steel and 12 specimens confined by GFRP, were fabricated. The failure patterns of both unconfined and confined specimens were assessed and discussed based on experimental results. The results proved that the maximum stress and corresponding strains of the cylinders confined using the proposed hoops are increased in comparison with those of the unconfined. This supports that the current work can be used for retrofitting concrete members and structures and thus may lead to increased stability of such structures.
