In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of a strategy of failure detection and identification. The point of proposed strategy includes a pattern extraction approach for failure identification using Auto-Associative Kernel Regression (AAKR). We consider a simulation data concerning 605 signals of a Generic Pressurized Water Reactor(GPWR). In the application, the reconstructions are provided by a set of AAKR models, whose input signals have been selected by Correlation Analysis(CA) for the identification of the groups. The failure pattern is extracted by analyzing the residuals of observations and reconstructions. We present the possibility of extraction of patterns for six failure.
Fault detection and diagnosis(FDD) system is beneficial in equipment management by providing the operator with tools which can help find out a failure of the system. An experimental study has been performed on fault detection and diagnosis method for a water chiller. Bayes classifier, which is one of classical pattern classifiers, is adopted in deciding whether fault occurred or not. FDD algorithm can detect refrigerant leak failure, when 20% amount of charged refrigerant for normal operation leaks from the water chiller. The refrigerant leak failure caused COP reduction by 6.7% compared with normal operation performance. When two kinds of faults, such as a decrease in the mass flow rate of cooling water and temperature sensor fault of cooling water inlet, are detected, COP is a little decreased by these faults.
Condition monitoring technology is of great importance for the maintenance of complex machinery in view of its early monitoring of the abnormal condition and the protection against failure. Several methods have been used for the detection of failure of journal bearings, one of the main elements of mechanical system. The methods most frequently used are vibration and temperature monitoring, but these are unable to monitor the wear conditions exactly. In this study, an ultrasonic measument method, one of the non-destructive testing methods, was introduced as the monitoring technology. Furtermore a pattem recognition method was applied to analyze the ultrasonic signal. The monitoring system using the pattern recognition method is composed of digital signal processing units and uses Hamming net algorithm for the recognition of ultrasonic waves. From the journal bearing wear test, the occurrence of adhesive wear of the white metal in rubbing contact with the shaft was exactly detected by this system, and the wear status of the journal bearing was monitored by measuring the wear thickness.
Failure modes in this study include refrigerant leakage, decrease in mass flow rate of the chilled water and cooling water, and sensor error of the cooling water inlet temperature. It is possible to detect and diagnose faults in this study by adopting FDD algorithm using only four parameters(compressor outlet temperature, chilled water inlet temperature, cooling water outlet temperature and compressor power consumption). Refrigerant leakage failure is detected at 20% of refrigerant leakage. When mass flow rate of the chilled and cooling water decrease more than 8% or 12%, FDD algorithm can detect the faults. The deviation of temperature sensor over $0.6^{\circ}C$ can be detected as fault.
This paper proposes a new approach of plant fault diagnosis which is based on detecting the characteristic pattern signals and associating them with the corresponding faults. The new approach does not require analytic modeling of the target system but best reflects the expertise embedded in the experienced human operation by mimicking them in a systematic way. This paper intends to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed by developing the algorithms to detect and estimate the typical characteristic pattern signals, I. e., oscillatory patterns, and applying them to the diagnosis of various faults of a 500MW boiler control system including tube rupture, feed-water leak, and controller failure.
When operating a complex facility, Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) system is beneficial in equipment management by providing the operator with tools which can help find out a failure of the system. In this research, FDD algorithm was developed using the general pattern classifier method that can be applied to centrifugal chiller system. The simulation model for a centrifugal chiller system was developed in order to obtain characteristic data of turbo chiller system under normal and faulty operation. We tested FDD algorithm of a centrifugal chiller using data from simulation model at full load performance and 60% part load performance. In this research, we presented fault detection method using a normalized distance. Sensitivity analysis of fault detection was carried out with respect to fault progress. FDD algorithm developed in this study was found to indicate each failure modes accurately.
Model based machine condition diagnosis methods are generally using a normal and many failure models which need sufficient data to train the models. However, data, especially for failure modes of interest, is very hard to get in real applications. So their industrial applications are either severely limited or impossible when the failure models cannot be trained. In this paper, continuous hidden Markov model(CHMM) with only a normal model has been suggested as a very promising machine condition diagnosis method which can be easily used for industrial applications. Generally hidden Markov model also uses many pattern models to recognize specific patterns and the recognition results of CHMM show the likelihood trend of models. By observing this likelihood trend of a normal model, it is possible to detect failures. This method has been successively applied to arc weld defect diagnosis. The result shows CHMM's big potential as a machine condition monitoring method.
In today's system operation, it is difficult to detect failures and take immediate action in the case of a shortage of manpower compared to the number of equipment or failures in vulnerable time zones, which can lead to delays in failure recovery. In addition, various algorithms exist to detect abnormal symptom data, and it is important to select an appropriate algorithm for each problem. In this paper, an ensemble-based isolation forest model was used to efficiently detect multivariate point anomalies that deviated from the mean distribution in the data set generated to predict system failure and minimize service interruption. And since significant changes in memory space usage are observed together with changes in CPU usage, the problem is solved by using LSTM-Auto Encoder for a collective anomaly in which another feature exhibits an abnormal pattern according to a change in one by comparing two or more features. did In addition, evaluation indicators are set for the performance evaluation of the model presented in this study, and then AI model evaluation is performed.
Induction motors are the most commonly used electrical drives because they are rugged, mechanically simple, adaptable to widely different operating conditions, and simple to control. The most common faults in squirrel-cage induction motors are bearing, stator and rotor faults. Surveys conducted by the IEEE and EPRI show that the most common fault in induction motor is bearing failure (${\sim}$40% of failure). Thence, this paper addresses experimental results for diagnosing faults with different rolling element bearing damage via motor current spectral analysis. Rolling element bearings generally consist of two rings, an inner and outer, between which a set of balls or rollers rotate in raceways. We set the experimental test bed to detect the rolling-element bearing misalignment of 3 type induction motors with normal condition bearing system, shaft deflection system by external force and a hole drilled through the outer race of the shaft end bearing of the four pole test motor. This paper takes the initial step of investigating the efficacy of current monitoring for bearing fault detection by incipient bearing failure. The failure modes are reviewed and the characteristics of bearing frequency associated with the physical construction of the bearings are defined. The effects on the stator current spectrum are described and related frequencies are also determined. This is an important result in the formulation of a fault detection scheme that monitors the stator currents. We utilized the FFT, Wavelet analysis and averaging signal pattern by inner product tool to analyze stator current components. The test results clearly illustrate that the stator signature can be used to identify the presence of a bearing fault.
