  • FPSO model tests of mooring line failure were carried out in the ocean basin at KRISO. The characteristics of the motions and mooring lines were investigated. The FPSO ship was moored using an internal turret and catenary mooring. The test model was 1/60 scale. The mooring lines were designed to satisfy the characteristics of the original mooring lines using the truncation method. The experiments were conducted under various environments: a safe wave, current and wind condition; single broken mooring line condition; and transient mode condition. The moment of the break was determined based on experimental test results. The results showed that the FPSO behavior and mooring line tensions were acceptable under the failure condition.

  • This paper investigates the reliability characteristics of a system consisting of a unit operating on-line and backed by n spares among which m units are kept "warm" as standbys ready to go on-line. The on-line unit has an arbitrary lifetime distribution, while the warm standbys have exponential failure time distributions. The Failed units are repaired and brought back to service. The cold spares do not fail while in storage. Solution of this extremely complicated queuing problem using a "renewal counting" approach is presented and extended to the situation where the warming-up takes non-negligible time. Finally, an approach to the economic system management is discussed, considering the long-run availability, cost of keeping spares and repair facility, and the associated cost of restarting the system, after a system failure. The model presented in this paper will have many applications including the determination of the spares inventory and the number of field spares to be "carried".

  • The concrete bridge decks are in need of replacement and rehabilitation due to decreasing load carrying capacity. In this study, to propose a strengthening technique that improves usability and structural performance of the bridge deck and to propose an efficient strengthening design technique which satisfies both the strength End serviceability of the bridge deck, this paper shows the failure characteristics of the strengthened bridge decks and proposes an empirical yield criterion. Therefore, strengthening efficiency was proposed based on the experiment and yield line analysis result. The yield line theory which adopts the modified criteria of Johansen is considered to predict the ultimate strength about all strengthening material(Carbon Fiber Sheet, Carbon Fiber Rod, Grid Type Carbon Fiber).

  • This paper studies on the noise reduction for a small automobile DC Motor (a window motor) using the 6 sigma process. The application of 6 sigma process suggested reliable and valuable statistical data for the quality of the DC motor at the production line. In the measurement step in 6 sigma process. the FMEA(failure mode effect analysis) were used for the detection of noise sources. The application of 6 sigma Process gave not only the improving method for the quality of the DC motor but also the confidence of improvement Itself since it was done on the basis of the test results for a number of DC motors at the production line. Consequently the 6 sigma process was proved very effective for the noise reduction at the production line.

  • Through comparing stress state of TEOS and SiLK-embedded structures, the effect of low-k materials on stress and stress distribution in via-line structures were investigated using three-dimensional finite element analyses. In the case of TEOS-embedded via-line structures, hydrostatic stress was concentrated at the via and the top of the lines, where the void was suspected to nucleate. On the other hand, in the via-line structures integrated with SiLK, large von-Mises stress is maintained at the via, thus deformation of via is expected as the main failure mode. A good correlation between the calculated results and experimentally observed failure modes according to dielectric materials was obtained.

  • Purpose: In spite of the recent application of a general infection control method, central line-associated infections is still relatively high in Korea. Central line bundle with Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) tegaderm dressing was reported to be effective in reducing catheter colonization and central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). Therefore, this study aimed to examine the incidences of catheter colonization occurrence and CLABSI while using Tegaderm vs. CHG Tegaderm dressings. Methods: We used a descriptive design. 400 patients who had central venous catheters were selected from four hospitals in the Korean National Healthcare-associated Infections Surveillance System. Of all subjects, 200 used Tegaderm™ (Tegaderm group), and the remaining 200 used CHG Tegaderm (CHG Tegaderm group) dressing at the catheter insertion site. Data were analyzed using the χ2 test or Fisher's exact test, t-test, and logistic regression analysis using SPSS WIN 21.0. Results: In the Tegaderm and CHG Tegaderm groups, CLABSI incidences were 5.89 and 1.79 per 1,000 catheter-days, catheter colonization incidences were 3.93 and 1.43 per 1,000 catheter-days, and central line bundle compliance rates were 26.0% and 49.0%, respectively. Catheter colonization risk factors were 'reinsertion after failure' and 'Tegaderm dressing' at the central line insertion site. CLABSI risk factors were 'incomplete performance of 7 central line bundle items' and 'Tegaderm dressing' at the central line insertion site. Conclusion: A further prospective study is needed to examine the effects of central line bundle with CHG Tegaderm dressing, avoiding central line reinsertion after failure, and improving the bundle compliance in reducing catheter colonization and CLABSI.

  • A significant problem met in engineering practice when designing cable-stayed bridges is the failure of cables. Many different factors can lead to sudden failure of cables, such as corrosion, continuous friction or abrasion, progressive and extended crevice created by fatigue and finally an explosion caused by sabotage or accident, are some of the causes that can lead to the sudden failure of one or more cables. This paper deals with the sudden failure of cables in a special form of cable-stayed bridges with a single line of cables anchored at the central axis of the deck's cross-section. The analysis is carried out by the modal superposition technique where an analytical method developed by the authors in a previous work has been employed.

  • Line sleeves, which used to connect ACSR cables when transmission lines were constructing, sometimes cause power transmission failure due to deterioration and corrosion. Therefore, power transmission line should be inspected regularly to prevent national disaster. Current inspection tool detects insertion length of transmission line on line sleeves, the inspection tool includes enormous error by operator. Moreover, the system is not controlled remotely, negligent accident would be caused while inspecting. To deal with those problems, KEPCO reviewed several ways to inspect line sleeves and proposes new method to inspect line sleeve by measuring magnetic flex which penetrate junction of steel and aluminum sleeve. The developed inspection tool is reliable enough to detect eccentric sleeves. Also, the developed inspection device was applied on actual transmission line and verified its effectiveness.

  • Recently, ship owners have been requiring the assessment of the maneuverability of a twin-screw ship under machinery failures. In this paper, we are only focused on the propulsion failure among propulsion failure, power supply failure, steering system failure etc. First of all, the mathematical model for the twin-screw 174K LNGC is verified by comparing the simulated results for $35^{\circ}$ turning test, $10^{\circ}/10^{\circ}$ zigzag test and $20^{\circ}/20^{\circ}$ zigzag test under normal operating condition and those obtained from free running model tests. And, sea trial results of 216K LNGC under single propeller failure are compared with those of 174K LNGC under identical condition to verify the proposed method to predict maneuverability under single propeller failure. After the straight line maneuver is simulated under the single propeller failure, the speed and equilibrated heading and rudder deflection angles at steady state are predicted. After the IMO maneuvering tests are simulated under the single propeller failure, the results are reviewed to investigate the maneuvering characteristics due to the failure.

  • Corrosion has a significant influence upon the reliability assessment and the maintenance planning of gas pipeline. Corrosion defects occurred on the underground pipeline can be obtained by conducting periodic in-line inspection (ILI). However, little study has been done for practical use of ILI data. This paper deals with remaining lifetime prediction of the gas pipeline in the presence of corrosion defects. Because a pipeline parameter includes uncertainty in its operation, a probabilistic approach is adopted in this paper. A pipeline fails when its operating pressure is larger than the pipe failure pressure. In order to estimate the failure probability, this paper uses First Order Reliability Method (FORM) which is popular in the field of structural engineering. A well-known Battelle code is chosen as the computational model for the pipe failure pressure. This paper develops a Matlab GUI for illustrating failure probability predictions Our result indicates that clustering of corrosion defects is helpful for improving a prediction accuracy and preventing an unnecessary maintenance.
