Seven-year Survival Rate of On-line Hemodiafiltration

  • Conventional high-flux hemodialysis (HD) is not as good as normal kidney function. Morbidity and mortality rates of patients receiving HD are still very high. To increase mid-to-large molecule clearance by combining diffusion and convection, on-line hemodiafiltration (HDF) is required. The objective of this study was to compare long-term survival rate of patients treated with on-line HDF to those who received conventional high-flux HD by reviewing data from Chonnam National University Hospital (CNUH). We selected patients who attended the 'CUNH dialysis center' and agreed to participate in the study. Overall, 40 patients with ESRD switched from high flux HD to on-line HDF or started on-line HDF from August 2007 to December 2009. Additionally, a total of 42 patients receiving conventional high-flux HD during the same period were enrolled. We then reviewed long-term survival rate of patients receiving on-line HDF over the next seven years. When we compared survival rates for seven years, the survival rate of the group receiving on-line HDF was 65% (26/40) while that of the group receiving the conventional high-flux HD was 54.8% (23/42). Although the number of patients was small to see survival difference clearly by one specific dialysis modality, there was somewhat difference in survival rate between the two groups. Indicators such as anemia, calcium-phosphate metabolism, nutritional status, treatment adequacy, and hospitalization were also improved in the group receiving HDF. Overall, results of our study showed beneficial effects of on-line HDF on clinical outcomes and survival in chronic HD patients.

Stability behavior of the transmission line system under incremental dynamic wind load

  • Wind load is the principal cause for a large number of the collapse of transmission lines around the world. The transmission line is traditionally designed for wind load according to a linear equivalent method, in which dynamic effects of wind are not appropriately included. Therefore, in the present study, incremental dynamic analysis is utilized to investigate the stability behavior of a 400 kV transmission line under wind load. In that case, the effects of vibration of cables and aerodynamic damping of cables were considered on the stability behavior of the transmission line. Superposition of the harmonic waves method was used to calculate the wind load. The corresponding wind speed to the beginning of the transmission line collapse was determined by incremental dynamic analysis. Also, the effect of the yawed wind was studied to determine the critical attack angle by the incremental dynamic method. The results show the collapse mechanisms of the transmission line and the maximum supportable wind speed, which is predicted 6m/s less than the design wind speed of the studied transmission line. Based on the numerical modeling results, a retrofitting method has been proposed to prevent failure of the tower members under design wind speed.

Analysis of the fluid-solid-thermal coupling of a pressurizer surge line under ocean conditions

  • To investigate the effects of ocean conditions on the thermal stress and deformation caused by thermal stratification of a pressurizer surge line in a floating nuclear power plant (FNPP), the finite element simulation platform ANSYS Workbench is utilized to conduct the fluid-solid-thermal coupling transient analysis of the surge line under normal "wave-out" condition (no motion) and under ocean conditions (rolling and pitching), generating the transient response characteristics of temperature distribution, thermal stress and thermal deformation inside the surge line. By comparing the calculated results for the three motion conditions, it is found that ocean conditions can significantly improve the thermal stratification phenomenon within the surge line, but may also result in periodic oscillations in the temperature, thermal stress, and thermal deformation of the surge line. Parts of the surge line that are more susceptible to thermal fatigue damage or failure are determined. According to calculation results, the improvements are recommended for pipeline structure to reduce the effects of thermal oscillation caused by ocean conditions. The analysis method used in this study is beneficial for designing and optimizing the pipeline structure of a floating nuclear power plant, as well as for increasing its safety.

  • Utilizing the simulation approaches, the dynamic production scheduling system FOLS(Flexible flowshop On-Line Simulation) is developed under the flexible flowshop environment. When an interruption such as machine failure/recovery is occurred at the shop floor, the FOLS system performs evaluations for job selection rule oriented alternatives, and generates a dynamic production schedule based on the collected current shop floor data. For the case study, the FOLS system is applied to the printed circuit card assembly(PCCA) line and simulation results are reported.

Effect of Impurities on Stress Induced Void Formation in Al-1% Si Conductors

  • It is shown in the present study that during the HTS (hot temperature storage) test, the metal contamination by impure elements can be highly susceptible to the void formation, leading to the open failure of the power line in the memory device. Such a functional failure associated with the metal contamination was investigated to be dominant in the early stages of the HTS test while the formation of a stress-driven void is mainly observed in the later stages. In particular, it was found that the void formed in the contaminated metal takes on a slit-like shape which has been known to be characteristic of the stress-related voiding. The impure elements leading to the metal degradation were identified to be carbon and oxygen introduced during the metal sputtering process. The experimental works show that the device reliability was significantly improved by reducing the level of such impure elements within metal.   • Railway vehicle equipment goes back again to the state just before when failure by the repair. In repairable system, we are interested in the failure interval. As such, a statistical model of the point process, NHPP power law is often used for the reliability analysis of a repairable system. In order to derive a quantitative reliability value of repairable system, we analyze the failure data of the air brake system of the train line 7. The quantitative value is the failure intensity function that was modified, converted into a cost-rate function. Finally we studied the optimal number and optimal interval in which the costs to a minimum consumption point as cost-rate function. The minimum cost point was 194,613 (won/day) during the total life cycle of the braking system, then the optimal interval were 2,251days and the number of optimal preventive maintenance were 7 times. Additionally, we were compared to the cost of a currently fixed interval(4Y) and the optimum interval then the optimal interval is 3,853(won/day) consuming smaller. In addition, judging from the total life, "fixed interval" is smaller than 1,157 days as "optimal interval".

  • A current differential relay has been used for transmission line protection. The relay may maloperate in the case of a failure of the secondary circuit of a current transformer (CT) because the differential current is produced. This paper presents an algorithm to detect a failure of a CT using the zero-sequence current. If the magnitude of the zero-sequence current is the same as the magnitude of the current of the other healthy phases, a failure of a CT is detected and then the blocking signal is activated. The proposed algorithm prohibit the maloperation of a differential relay in the case of a CT failure and thus increase the security of the relay.
