  • The ultimate strength behaviour of sandwich composite beams with J-hooks and normal weight concrete (SCSSBJNs) are studied through two-point loading tests on ten full-scale SCSSBJNs. The test results show that the SCSSBJN with different parameters under two-point loads exhibits three types of failure modes, i.e., flexure, shear, and combined shear and flexure mode. SCSSBJN failed in different failure modes exhibits different load-deflection behaviours, and the main difference of these three types of behaviours exist in their last working stages. The influences of thickness of steel faceplate, shear span ratio, concrete core strength, and spacing of J-hooks on structural behaviours of SCSSBJN are discussed and analysed. These test results show that the failure mode of SCSSBJN was sensitive to the thickness of steel faceplate, shear span ratio, and concrete core strength. Theoretical models are developed to estimate the cracking, yielding, and ultimate bending resistance of SCSSBJN as well as its transverse cross-sectional shear resistance. The validations of predictions by these theoretical models proved that they are capable of estimating strengths of novel SCSSBJNs.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a consistent algorithm for the finite element analysis for behavior of concrete under cyclic loading using viscoplastic-damage model. For modeling the behavior of concrete under cyclic loading, consistent algorithms of rate-dependent viscoplastic-damage are employed with a Willam-Warnke 5-parameter failure criterion which can consider the softening behavior of concrete and consistent tangent moduli are derived. Using finite element program implemented with the developed algorithms, the algorithms are verified and the behaviors of concrete under cylic loading are simulated and compared with experimental data.

  • This paper considers the reliability computation of the network with dependent components and a software system is developed for supporting the reliability analysis and improvement of the system reliability. At first, We propose the common cause failure and load sharing models as the typical models considering the dynamic behaviors of networks with dependent components. Secondly, the algorithm is proposed to obtain the network reliability and reliability importance of component. The software, Delphi, is used to develop the our reliability analysis system.

  • A reducing bearing angle theory for bond of ribbed reinforcing bars to concrete is proposed to simulate experimental observation. Analytical expressions to determine bond strength for splitting and pullout failure are derived, where the bearing angle is a key variable. As bearing angle is reduced, splitting strength decreases and shearing strength increases. The proposed reducing bearing angle theory is effective to simulate damage of the deformed bar-concrete interface and understand bond mechanism of ribbed reinforcing steel in concrete structures.

  • Mechanical anchorage can substitute a standard hook. To enhance the workability and economical benefit of mechanical anchorage, the size of anchor plate should be optimized. In this paper, the pull-out behaviors such as strength, failure mode, and crack patterns of mechanically anchored reinforcement in concrete are investigated using nonlinear finite element analysis. The nonlinear finite element analysis results are consistent with the experimental results. These results show that the optimal anchor plates can be designed using the nonlinear finite element analysis.

  • In this paper, the linear and nonlinear strut-tie model approaches for the analysis and design of concrete structures are suggested. The validity of the approaches are examined through the strength analysis of four dapped-end beams tested to failure. According to the analysis results, the nonlinear strut-tie model approach which takes the various characteristics of nonlinear behaviors into account in the analysis and design of structural concrete and predicts the strength of structural concrete proven to be an effective method for structural analysis and design.

  • This paper proposes the concept and the general framework of the risk-based seismic design. Because earthquakes and the behaviors of structures are very unpredictable, probabilistic seismic design methods have been proposed after deterministic design methods. Considering these changes, we can find that the important point of seismic design is not the structural behavior itself, but the consequence of structural behavior under possible earthquakes. Risk-based seismic design can tell these consequences under any earthquakes. In this paper, structural confidences are considered by using fragility curve, and risk is modeled by failure probability and consequence-property damage cost, casualty cost.

  • A stochastic probability model based on the non-homogeneous Poisson process is represented that can correctly analyze the time-dependent linear and nonlinear behaviors of total damage over the occurrence process of loads. Introducing several types of damage intensity functions, the probability of failure and the total damage with respect to mean time to failure has been investigated in detail. Taking particularly the limit state to be the random variables followed with a distribution function, the uncertainty of that would be taken into consideration in this paper. In addition, the stochastic probability model has been straightforwardly applied to the rubble-mound breakwaters with the definition of damage level about the erosion of armor units. The probability of failure and the nonlinear total damage with respect to mean time to failure has been analyzed with the damage intensity functions for armor units estimated by fitting the expected total damage to the experimental datum. Based on the present results from the stochastic probability model, the preventive management for the armor units of the rubble-mound breakwaters would be suggested to make a decision on the repairing time and the minimum amounts repaired quantitatively.

  • Scaled model tests were performed to investigate the stability of a foundation located above limestone cavities. Cavity shape was assumed to be an ellipse having 1/3 for the ratio of minor to major axis lengths. 12 different test models which have various depths, locations, inclinations, sizes and numbers of cavity were experimented and they were classified into 5 different groups. Crack initiation pressure, maximum pressure, deformation behaviors, failure modes and subsidence profiles of test models were obtained, and then the influences of those parameters on the foundation stability were investigated. No cavity model showed a general shear failure, whereas the models including various cavities showed the complicated three different failure modes which were only punching failure, both punching and shear failures, and double shear failure. The stability of foundation was found to be decreased as the cavity was located at shallower depth, the size and number of cavity were increased. Differential settlements appeared when the cavity was located under the biased part of foundation. Furthermore, subsidence profiles were found to depend on the distribution of underground cavities.

  • The Hoek-Brown failure criterion for rock masses developed first in 1980 is widely accepted and has been applied in a variety of rock engineering problems including slope analyses. The failure criterion was modified over the years because rock mass strength by the original failure criterion in 1980 was overestimated. The modified failure criterion, named Generalized Hoek-Brown Failure Criterion, was proposed with a new classification called the Geological Strength Index(GSI) in 1994. Generally, Hoek-Brown failure criterion is applied in numerical analyses of rock mass behaviors using equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters estimated by linear regression method. But these parameters estimated by this method have some inaccuracies to be applied and to be incorporated into numerical models and limit equilibrium programs. The most important issue is that this method cannot take account of non-linear characteristics of Hoek-Brown criterion, therefore, equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters is used as constant values regardless of field stress distribution in rock masses. In this study, the numerical analysis on rock slope stability considering non-linear characteristics of Hoek-Brown failure criterion was carried out. Futhermore, by the latest Hoek-Brown failure criterion in 2002, the revised estimating method of equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters was applied and rock mass damage criterion is introduced to account for the strength reduction due to stress relaxation and blast damge in slope stability.
