Crowd Participation Pattern in the Phases of a Product Development Process that Utilizes Crowdsourcing

  • The rise of crowdsourcing and web 2.0 opens plenty of opportunities for companies who want to exploit external sources of ideas for internal innovation. Utilization of crowdsourcing for product design and development has been attracting the attention of both enterprises and researchers. Many cases of implementation of crowdsourcing for product design and development such as: Threadless, FIAT Mio, Lego online Factory, etc., have made crowdsourcing a promising alternative source of innovative power. Although crowdsourcing gained access due to improved Internet access and web 2.0, it is little understood how the crowd, with respect to participation, behaves for any crowdsourcing project. To investigate this, we conducted an experiment on a real crowd of engineering related individuals to figure out the crowd participation pattern for various product design and development phases of a new product development project. The experiment results give a quantitative view of the participation of the crowd (i.e., crowd participation pattern) in various phases of a product design and development process that utilizes crowdsourcing, provide a practical guidance for companies to harness the power of the crowd sensibly, and provide experimental data for further research in this field.

A Location-Routing Problem for Logistics Network Integrating Forward and Reverse Flow (역물류를 고려한 통합물류망에서의 입지:경로문제)

  • An effective management for reverse flows of products such as reuse, repair and disposal, has become an important issue for every aspect of business. In this paper, we study the Location-Routing Problem (LRP) in the multi-stage closed-loop supply chain network. The closed-loop supply chain in this study integrated both forward and reverse flows. In forward flow, a factory, Distribution Center (DC) and retailer are considered as usual. Additionally in reverse flow, we consider the Central Returns collection Center (CRC) and disposal facility. We propose a mixed integer programming model for the design of closed-loop supply chain integrating both forward and reverse flows. Since the LRP belongs to an NP-hard problem, we suggest a heuristic algorithm based on genetic algorithm. For some test problems, we found the optimal locations and routes by changing the numbers of retailers and facility candidates. Furthermore, we compare the efficiencies between open-loop and closed-loop supply chain networks. The results show that the closed-loop design is better than the open one in respect to the total routing distance and cost. This phenomenon enlarges the cut down effect on cost as an experimental space become larger.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the dominance effects of environmental factors such as Illuminance, humidity and Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) on the operators' productivity at Malaysian electronic industry. A case study was carried out at an electronic components assembly factory. The environmental factors examined were the Illuminance (lux), humidity and WBGT of the surrounding workstation area. Two sets of representative data including the illuminance, humidity and WBGT level and production rate were collected during the study. The production rate data were collected through observations and survey questionnaires while the illuminance level was measured using photometer model RS 180-7133, the humidity and WBGT level were measured by using Quest Temp apparatus and humidity. Taguchi Method was utilized to find the sequence of dominant factors that contributed to the productivity of operator at that specified production workstation. The study reveals that the dominant factor contributed to the productivity was WBGT, followed by illuminance and humidity.

  • General criteria for the quality of porous concrete have not been established yet in Korea. And yet, pavement and construction have been performed. In this paper, guidelines on the construction site quality control of porous concrete were developed in order to establish criteria for resolving the issues and problems of porous concrete, to establish methods for improving poor performance, and to manage porous concrete more systematically. In addition, a guide for the construction site quality control of porous concrete, which was appropriate for reality, was developed by researching several quality control guides and maintenance at construction sites. The guide consists of a total of nine chapters such as Application Range, Overview, the Structure of Porous Concrete, the Design of Package Thickness, Package Materials for Porous Concrete, Construction Methods, Quality Assurance and Inspections, Construction Site Quality Control, and Maintenance. It describes quality control guidelines in all steps such as methods for transporting porous concrete from the factory to the construction site, cautions for construction work at construction sites, maintenance, and management. The Guide for the Construction Site Quality Control of Porous Concrete is expected to ensure the quality of porous concrete, to reduce national costs for quality assurance, and to help ensure the health and safety of Korean people.

  • 최근 사물인터넷 분야에서 스마트 팩토리 부분은 많은 주목을 받고 있으며 관련된 연구도 많이 진행되고 있다. 기존의 스마트 팩토리 플랫폼은 제품 생산 효율성을 높여 비용을 줄이는 것을 목표로 센서로부터의 데이터 수집과 클라우드로의 전송, 대규모 데이터 분석을 통한 의사결정 등 자동화 부분에 집중되어 있다. 본 논문에서는 웹 GUI를 활용하여 응용 개발의 편의성을 높여 개발자가 아닌 공정관리자가 직접 공정을 제어할 수 있도록 했으며 유사 환경이 구축된 다른 공장에서 기존에 만들어진 공정 프로그램을 공유하고 재수정할 수 있는 시스템을 설계하였다. 또한, 프로토타입을 구현하여 제안된 웹 GUI기반 스마트 팩토리 공정 관리 및 공유 시스템의 운용 가능성을 검증하였다.

A Case Study on Strategic Shift from Smart-Work to Work-Smart of Company K

  • Early smart-work of company K was a technology-led way of applying ICT such as smart phones and mobile devices to business. After company K perceived the limitations of ICT-driven smart work, it propelled the work-smart, doing a work smart toward the way that human beings become central and a creative organizational culture is engendered. Company K propelled work-smart strategy in eight categories: simplification of data requirements, establishment efficient meeting culture, streamlining reporting and approval process, simplified document creation, overtime decrease, spreading flexible work system, settlement of healing leave, creating work-smart place. Company K set up an organizational culture secretariat dedicated to work-smart promotion and selected task priorities in consideration of urgency and effectiveness. Owing to such efforts, the company K's work-smart index rose sharply to 72 points this year from 56 points in the previous year. At the organizational culture survey, employees responded that organizational culture improved in all area. For a better future, company K analyzed its work-smart outcomes and planned progressively to improve its work-smart efforts based on employees opinions. This case study will serve as a guideline, for companies to make efforts to going forward to today work-smart beyond yesterday smart-work.

  • Recently, the production process system is largely composed automatic system using the wired network. The production process system using wired network has disadvantages that take place expense when the installed and inspected production of equipment was replaced. The each equipment happens to repair cost for control and management in production processes. In this paper, the industrial equipment that applied for IEEE 802.15.4(ZigBee) technology solves a complicated space at the plant. And then when the industrial equipments replace wired network with wireless network, this paper studied its user interface.

Design and Planning Process Management for Reducing Rework in Modular Construction Using Dependency Structure Matrix (DSM) (DSM을 활용한 모듈러 건축 설계단계에서의 제작 및 시공 정보 반영 및 재시공 감소 방안)

  • Modular construction has benefits such as short construction duration and high productivity owing to the production in factory and owing to simultaneous on-site work. However, rework occurs in modular construction and the rework affects the efficiency of modular construction. The almost of causes of rework are exist in design process. To reduce the cause of rework, the information flow of the design process should be managed and the plan to reduce rework should be included. However, the modular construction has complex process because of impeded unit production so it is hard to manage the information flow in design process. Moreover, when the plan to reduce rework is included, the design process will be more complicated. Therefore, the objective of this research is to suggest the design process including the rework reduction plan and to alleviate the complexity of design process by using Dependency Structure Matrix(DSM). By using DSM, the iteration and feedback in design process is reduced and it can be expected that rework in modular project can be reduced by using suggested design process.

The Implementation of Smart Factories: Empirical Evidence from Korean Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (스마트팩토리 도입 영향요인에 관한 실증연구: 우리나라 중소제조기업을 중심으로)

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine firm-level attributes related to Korean manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises' (SMEs') decisions to implement smart factories. Design/methodology/approach - This study uses the provided by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups of Korea and the Korea Federation of SMEs. Manufacturing SMEs' decisions to implement smart factories in 2018-2019 were analyzed using multinomial logit and ordered logit models. Findings - The findings of this study suggest that firms' decisions to implement smart factories were positively related to firm size, R&D intensity, international market scope, and transactional relationships with customers. However, smart factory implementation decisions were not related to firm age and CEO gender. Research implications or Originality - This study illuminates firm-level attributes that may drive organizational innovation in the era of Industry 4.0 and thus contributes to the innovation adoption literature. This study also contributes to growing research on smart factories by analyzing the actual, progressive decisions to implement smart factories, as opposed to perceived intentions to implement them.

  • Nowadays, permutation problems with large state spaces and the path to solution is irrelevant such as N-Queens problem has the same general property for many important applications such as integrated-circuit design, factory-floor layout, job-shop scheduling, automatic programming, telecommunications network optimization, vehicle routing, and portfolio management. Therefore, methods which are able to find a solution are very important. Genetic algorithm (GA) is one the most well-known methods for solving N-Queens problem and applicable to a wide range of permutation problems. In the absence of specialized solution for a particular problem, genetic algorithm would be efficient. But holism and random choices cause problem for genetic algorithm in searching large state spaces. So, the efficiency of this algorithm would be demoted when the size of state space of the problem grows exponentially. In this paper, the new method presented based on genetic algorithm to cover this weakness. This new method is trying to provide partial view for genetic algorithm by locally searching the state space. This may cause genetic algorithm to take shorter steps toward the solution. To find the first solution and other solutions in N-Queens problem using proposed method: dividing N-Queens problem into subproblems, which configuring initial population of genetic algorithm. The proposed method is evaluated and compares it with two similar methods that indicate the amount of performance improvement.
