  • Purpose - We investigate whether a potential missing pricing factor plays a significant role in the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle. Design/methodology/approach - We theoretically show how a missing pricing factor can affect the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle, and also show how to get around the problem empirically. We adopt the Fama-French five factor model for the estimation of the idiosyncratic risk and use randomly constructed portfolios as test assets. Findings - We find that a missing factor does not drive the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle. Thus, we conclude that the idiosyncratic volatility does affect the risk premium of its stock. Research implications or Originality - The Fama-French five factor model does a pretty good job in explaining the risk premiums of stocks, and it can be used to reliably estimate idiosyncratic risk of stocks.

  • Spatial distribution of groundwater contaminant concentration has special characteristics such as approximate symmetric profile, for example, in the transversal direction to groundwater flow direction, a certain ratio in directional propagation distances, etc. To obtain a geophysically appropriate semivariogram which is a key factor in estimation of groundwater contaminant concentration at desired locations, these special characteristics should be considered. Specifically, the concepts of symmetry and ratio are considered in this paper. By applying these two concepts, significant improvement of semivariograms, estimation variances, and final estimation results compared with the ones by conventional approaches which usually do not account for symmetry and ratio are shown using field experimental data.

  • For preliminary estimation of ships' machinery weights, many papers giving well-judged data and discussions for rational method of estimation, such as [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], are available, however, they are mostly concerned with large ships propelled by power more than about 2, 000 horsepower. Regarding the medium and small-sized ships, as far as the author is aware, fragmental data and vague discussions found in various technical literature are the all available. In this paper, available data concerned with machinery weights of commercial ships propelled by direct-drive diesel plants of power below 3, 000 horsepower with single screw propeller are collected and analysed to obtain systematic data Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 as weight to power ratio versus power per shaft diagrams together with suplementary data Fig. 1 and Fig. 3. Influences of various factor such as revolutions per minute, mean effective pressure, type and construction of the main units on machinery weights are also investigated in detail to give a better guidance for logical and rational utlization of the proposed diagrams in preliminary estimation of machinery weights.

  • The efficient safety estimation for a business should analyze an accident data by considering every possible and potential factor. Thus, we consider several factors to build the safety estimation model to meet fairness and rationality. This paper present the yearly statistic data of accident from KOSHA analyze the data by industry, scale, year of service of a employee, age and other factors; build the safety estimation model for the business based on the accident report derived the analysis. The estimation model is established by the weights for accident type, degree, scale, industry, year of service, and age of the employee derived from ANP(Analytic Network Process).

  • How well the self-interference cancellation (SIC) technique performs is a primary issue in realizing an in-band full-duplex (FD) wireless communication system. One factor affecting its performance is channel estimation error on the self-interference channel. We propose a new analog SIC scheme which is robust to channel estimation error. It uses phase rotators in the radio frequency (RF) chain. We also derive closed-form equations for the residual self-interference of the proposed and the conventional schemes. The analytical and numerical results show that the residual self-interference under the proposed SIC scheme is less than that using the conventional scheme, even though channel estimation error is present.

  • Accurate temperature measurement is a key factor to implement the rapid thermal processing(RTP). A temperature estimation method using acoustic wave has been proposed to overcome the inaccuracy and contamination problem of the previous methods. The proposed method, however, may suffer from the offset and low resolution problem since it is implemented in the time domain. This paper presents a temperature estimation method using the phase detection of acoustic wave. Based on the frequency domain approach, the proposed technique increases the resolution of the measured temperature and reduces the effect of noise. We investigate the performance of the proposed method via experiments.

  • Estimation of reverberant time is one of important factor for the calculation of absorption ration of absorption material. In general the digital filter bank has been used for the, estimation of decay curve of the sound pressure in a reverberant room. However at low frequency, it is not easy to get a good linear decay curve for the estimation of reverberant time. Now, wavelet transform is applied to this difficult task, a good result has been obtained at low frequency. The decay curve using wavelet filter bank is better than that using digital filter bank at low frequency. At higher frequency, both curves are similar.

  • This paper deals with adaptive control method of a robot manipulator with one-flexible link. ARMA model is used as a prediction and estimation model, and adaptive control scheme consists of parameter estimation part and adaptive controller. Parameter estimation part estimates ARMA model's coefficients by using recursive least-squares(RLS) algorithm and generates the predicted output. Variable forgetting factor (VFF) is introduced to achieve an efficient estimation, and adaptive controller consists of reference model, error dynamics model and minimum prediction error controller. An optimal input is obtained by minimizing input torque, it's successive input change and the error between the predicted output and the reference output.

  • In this study, cancer incidence data were assessed to provide various rates of five year age groups for a given year, lying between two census years. The individual exponential growth rate method is most useful in both population-based and non-population cased cancer registries in India to estimate the population by five yearly age groups and also find the rates of crude rates, age standard rates and cumulative rates. This method has been shown to endure from bias and often results sacrificing the overall growth rate and correction factor must be needful in five year age group population to maintain it. A second method, the difference distribution method is also able to maintain the overall growth rate and overcome the bias in estimation of five yearly age group populations. From this point of view these methods serving a new technique for population estimation by five yearly age groups for inter census years.
