Aims: The present study investigated the relationship between condylar resorption and craniofacial skeleton types(especially vertical relationships), the differences of craniofacial skeleton types between with open bite group and without open bite group, and the associations of anterior disc dislocation with or without reduction to condylar resorption with MRI. Patients selection and methods: Clinical examination, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), panorama, lateral transcranial and lateral cephalometric radiographs in 34 patients with condylar resorption were used to investigate this relationship. Results and Conclusions: Patients with the following specific facial morphologic characteristics appear to be most susceptible to condylar resorption: (1) females were predominant, (2) patients' age ranged from 12 to 50 years old with a strong predominance for 2nd and 3rd decades, (3) patients had high mandibular plane angle and high gonial angle, (4) patients had decreased vertical height of the ramus, (5) patients had generally significant antegonial notch, (6) patients had predominance of Class I occlusal relationship with or without open bite but mandible was retruded as mean ANB 5.54 degrees, (7) condylar resorption rarely occurs in lower mandibular plane angle facial types, (8) although no statistically significant difference was found, the open bite group had a tendency more hyperdivergent skeletal pattern than the non open bite group, and (9) imaging demonstrates from small resorbing condyles to idiopathic condylar resorption and TMJ articular disc dislocations. Thus, morphologic features of patients with vertical discrepancies may represent a risk factor for the development of condylar resorption.
Background: Cleft lip and palate deformity have unknown patterns of maxillofacial growth and development. The maxillofacial growth can be affected either by congenital or environmental factors such as infection and trauma. Surgical repair of cleft lip and palate may interfere the subsequent growth and development of maxillofacial region. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of maxillofacial growth patterns in adult cleft lip and palate patients. Materials and Methods: The material for this study consisted of 17 adult male patients with cleft lip and palate. Cephalometric tracing and measurements were done by one investigator. The relationship between 17 cleft lip and palate patients and Korean norms were evaluated statistically. Results: There were statistically differences in Na. perpendicular to point A, SNA angle, effective maxillary length, maxillofacial differencial. Wit's appraisal and upper incisor to point A(p < 0.01). Pogonion to Na. perpendicular also statistically differed(p < 0.05). Other measurements didn't statistically differ. Conclusion: It was evident that in adult cleft lip and palate patients, maxilla was retruded and short. Careful cleft lip and palate repair and treatment are recommended for facilitating normal growth of maxilla.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and biochemical features as well as the molecular analysis of a newly diagnosed illustrative case with ML II and to analyze the clinical features of 11 Korean patients with ML II/III. Method: Including a newly diagnosed patient, total 11 patients in 10 families were diagnosed as ML II (n=7) or ML III (n=4) were enrolled in the study. A diagnosis of ML II or III was made by demonstrating increased lysosomal enzyme activities in the plasma and sequence analysis of GNPTAB with characteristic clinical features. Result: A illustrative case of ML II patient was a 17 month-old boy showing characteristic facial appearance, multiple joint contractures with cardiac involvements. The enzyme assay showed increased lysosomal enzyme activities in the plasma. We identified compound heterozygous mutations in GNPTAB sequence analysis, including a frameshift (c.3428dupA [pAsn1143Lysfs*3]) and a nonsense variant c.673C>T (p.Gln225*). In total 11 patients with ML II/III, the patients with ML II showed severe growth retardation (height standard deviation score -3.2 [${\pm}1.5$]), compare to patients with ML III. Furthermore, patients with ML II patients had serious cardiac problem (n=4), hepatomegaly (n=3) and underwent tracheostomy (n=3) with further respiratory support due to respiratory distress. To improve osteoporosis and bone pain, all patients with ML III and four of 7 patients with ML II treated with intravenous pamidronate. Conclusion: Here we showed a newly diagnosed case of ML II and clinical features of 11 Korean patients with ML II or III. These data could be helpful for further diagnosis of mucolipidosis, a rare inherited metabolic disease, in Korea.

Recently as the interest on Esthetic Dental Prosthesis is arising, the domains of Esthetic Dentistry is being widely investigated. Esthetic Dental Prosthesis is influenced greatly by the shape, color, tooth arrangement of the teeth and the facial features(including the lips). So the degree to which these characters harmonize will be the professional esthetical standard while the satisfaction of the patient will be another esthetical measure. The reason for this is that each and every one of us has a different standard of what is considered beautiful. Of course it doesn't mean that every standard is correct. Then what does Esthetical Prosthesis mean and what should the standard be? This must be defined as a prosthesis that satisfies the basic requirements - margin, contour, occlusion, and at the same time it should restore the shape, color, and tooth arrangement which the client(patient) would love to have. As Esthetic Prosthesis contains its subjective meaning a great deal, it shouldn't be simply distinguished between the beauty of the teeth itself or ugliness. Also in some case, it needs surgical treatment to make it harmonious in the whole aspect so that one may keep the feeling of satisfaction and security. Then what is the shape, color, tooth arrangement that each individual wants? There is an indefinite variety. For example, considering arrangement both regular and irregular is considered beautiful by each different individual. Regular arrangement may be the standard of beauty for some, while irregular arrangement may be thought of as natural looking and beautiful. That is why there must be enough communication with the patient and an agreement be made at the clinic before a diagnostic plan and actual surgery. The treatment plan as mentioned above must be sent to the dental laboratory. In this research, by using case studies, I am going to the importance and appropriateness of the data and information for the dental technician's esthetic prosthesis.
Objective: This study classified three different emotional states(boredom, pain, and surprise) using physiological signals. Background: Emotion recognition studies have tried to recognize human emotion by using physiological signals. It is important for emotion recognition to apply on human-computer interaction system for emotion detection. Method: 122 college students participated in this experiment. Three different emotional stimuli were presented to participants and physiological signals, i.e., EDA(Electrodermal Activity), SKT(Skin Temperature), PPG(Photoplethysmogram), and ECG (Electrocardiogram) were measured for 1 minute as baseline and for 1~1.5 minutes during emotional state. The obtained signals were analyzed for 30 seconds from the baseline and the emotional state and 27 features were extracted from these signals. Statistical analysis for emotion classification were done by DFA(discriminant function analysis) (SPSS 15.0) by using the difference values subtracting baseline values from the emotional state. Results: The result showed that physiological responses during emotional states were significantly differed as compared to during baseline. Also, an accuracy rate of emotion classification was 84.7%. Conclusion: Our study have identified that emotions were classified by various physiological signals. However, future study is needed to obtain additional signals from other modalities such as facial expression, face temperature, or voice to improve classification rate and to examine the stability and reliability of this result compare with accuracy of emotion classification using other algorithms. Application: This could help emotion recognition studies lead to better chance to recognize various human emotions by using physiological signals as well as is able to be applied on human-computer interaction system for emotion recognition. Also, it can be useful in developing an emotion theory, or profiling emotion-specific physiological responses as well as establishing the basis for emotion recognition system in human-computer interaction.

Recently, we have remarkable developments in intelligent robot systems. The remarkable features of intelligent robot are that it can track user, does face recognition and vital for many surveillance based systems. Advantage of face recognition when compared with other biometrics recognition is that coerciveness and contact that usually exist when we acquire characteristics do not exist in face recognition. However, the accuracy of face recognition is lower than other biometric recognition due to decrease in dimension from of image acquisition step and various changes associated with face pose and background. Factors that deteriorate performance of face recognition are many such as distance from camera to face, lighting change, pose change, and change of facial expression. In this paper, we implement a new 3D active camera system to prevent various pose variation that influence face recognition performance and propose face recognition algorithm for intelligent surveillance system and mobile robot system.
Purpose: Recent advancements in molecular techniques have greatly contributed to the discovery of genetic causes of unexplained developmental delay. Here, we describe the results of array comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) and the clinical features of 27 patients with global developmental delay. Methods: We included 27 children who fulfilled the following criteria: Korean children under 6 years with global developmental delay; children who had at least one or more physical or neurological problem other than global developmental delay; and patients in whom both array CGH and G-banded karyotyping tests were performed. Results: Fifteen male and 12 female patients with a mean age of $29.3{\pm}17.6months$ were included. The most common physical and neurological abnormalities were facial dysmorphism (n=16), epilepsy (n=7), and hypotonia (n=7). Pathogenic copy number variation results were observed in 4 patients (14.8%): 18.73 Mb dup(2)(p24.2p25.3) and 1.62 Mb del(20p13) (patient 1); 22.31 Mb dup(2) (p22.3p25.1) and 4.01 Mb dup(2)(p21p22.1) (patient 2); 12.08 Mb del(4)(q22.1q24) (patient 3); and 1.19 Mb del(1)(q21.1) (patient 4). One patient (3.7%) displayed a variant of uncertain significance. Four patients (14.8%) displayed discordance between G-banded karyotyping and array CGH results. Among patients with normal array CGH results, 4 (16%) revealed brain anomalies such as schizencephaly and hydranencephaly. One patient was diagnosed with Rett syndrome and one with $M{\ddot{o}}bius$ syndrome. Conclusion: As chromosomal microarray can elucidate the cause of previously unexplained developmental delay, it should be considered as a first-tier cytogenetic diagnostic test for children with unexplained developmental delay.
Facial appearance is greatly influenced by illumination conditions, and therefore illumination variation is one of the factors that degrades performance of face recognition systems. In this paper, we propose a robust method for face representation under varying illumination conditions, combining non-alpha Weberface (non-alpha WF) and histogram equalization. We propose a two-step method: (1) for a given face image, non-alpha WF, which is not applied a parameter for adjusting the intensity difference between neighboring pixels in WF, is computed; (2) histogram equalization is performed to non-alpha WF, to make a uniform histogram distribution globally and to enhance the contrast. $(2D)^2PCA$ is applied to extract low-dimensional discriminating features from the preprocessed face image. Experimental results on the extended Yale B face database and the CMU PIE face database show that the proposed method yielded better recognition rates than several illumination processing methods as well as the conventional WF, achieving average recognition rates of 93.31% and 97.25%, respectively.

In this study, we introduce robust face recognition system with illumination variation realized with the aid of CT preprocessing method. As preprocessing algorithm, Census Transform(CT) algorithm is used to extract locally facial features under unilluminated condition. The dimension reduction of the preprocessed data is carried out by using $(2D)^2$PCA which is the extended type of PCA. Feature data extracted through dimension algorithm is used as the inputs of proposed radial basis function neural networks. The hidden layer of the radial basis function neural networks(RBFNN) is built up by fuzzy c-means(FCM) clustering algorithm and the connection weights of the networks are described as the coefficients of linear polynomial function. The essential design parameters (including the number of inputs and fuzzification coefficient) of the proposed networks are optimized by means of artificial bee colony(ABC) algorithm. This study is experimented with both Yale Face database B and CMU PIE database to evaluate the performance of the proposed system.

In this paper, we propose a real-tin e face recognition system that is robust under various lighting conditions. Th Modified Census Transform algorithm that is insensitive to illumination variations is employed to extract local structure features. In a practical face recognition system, acquired images through a camera are likely to be blurred and some of them could be side face images, resulting that unacceptable performance could be obtained. To improve stability of a practical face recognition system, we propose a real-time algorithm that rejects unnecessary facial picture and makes use of recognition consistency between successive frames. Experimental results on the Yale database with large illumination variations show that the proposed approach is approximately 20% better than conventional appearance-based approaches. We also found that the proposed real-time method is more stable than existing methods that produces recognition result for each frame.
