  • The purpose of this study is to investigate difference and likeness on the form in women's Hanbok between the later Chosun Dynasty and modern times based on Belong's observing system for 'Apparel-Body Construct'. Belong's framework is composed 5 pairs of contrast word -'Closed or Open', 'Whole or Par', 'Planar Separation or Planar integration'. 'Flat or Rounded', and 'Determinate or Indeterminate'. Major findings of this study are as follows. First, the form of women's Hanbok in later Chosun Dynasty is 'Variably Closed', 'Part' and 'Rounded', whereas that in modern is 'Open', 'Whole' and 'Flat' Women's Hanbok of modern is lesser convex, and more open than that of later Chosun Dynasty according to increasing use of transparent textiles. Moreover, in comparison with old style, that of modern has the tendency of perceiving primarily whole feature by organic linkage of parts. Because of loose fit of Jeogori and rigid DongJong etc, characteristic of 'Plat' strengthened in modern Hanbok. Secondly, women's Hanbok in the later Chosun Dynasty and modern has common properties of 'Planar Seperation' and 'Determinate'. Women's Hanbok belongs to 'Planar Seperation', because the effect cognized to figure and ground. can be found between small parts and whole of Jegori, or can be found between the head and face. Jeuori and waist band, and Chima and under ware. Further more. it can be classified into 'Determinate'. because it use textiles which have no pattern un it or which show a subtle surface effect by texture changing.

  • In this paper, a novel approach is addressed to facilitate the browsing of large collection of digital photos associated with specified person(s) in the photos. The goal of the proposed method is to exploit additional person-identity features as incorporating facial regions and peripheral clothes region associated with them. For more effective incorporation of the clothes and facial features, situation-based photo clustering is also proposed. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed method experiment was performed with 1120 generic home photos. The experiment results showed that the proposed method outperformed the conventional method us El.g only face feature as showing the average performance of about 92% contrary to the average performance of about 70% in the conventional method.

  • In this paper, we present realistic 3D head modeling and facial expression systems. For 3D head modeling, we perform generic model fitting to make individual head shape and texture mapping. To calculate the deformation function in the generic model fitting, we determine correspondence between individual heads and the generic model. Then, we reconstruct the feature points to 3D with simultaneously captured images from calibrated stereo camera. For texture mapping, we project the fitted generic model to image and map the texture in the predefined triangle mesh to generic model. To prevent extracting the wrong texture, we propose a simple method using a modified interpolation function. For generating 3D facial expression, we use the vector muscle based algorithm. For more realistic facial expression, we add the deformation of the skin according to the jaw rotation to basic vector muscle model and apply mass spring model. Finally, several 3D facial expression results are shown at the end of the paper.

  • This paper presents a method that controls facial expression in realtime of 3D avatar by having the user select a sequence of facial expressions in the space of facial expressions. The space of expression is created from about 2400 frames of facial expressions. To represent the state of each expression, we use the distance matrix that represents the distances between pairs of feature points on the face. The set of distance matrices is used as the space of expressions. Facial expression of 3D avatar is controled in real time as the user navigates the space. To help this process, we visualized the space of expressions in 2D space by using the Principal Component Analysis(PCA) projection. To see how effective this system is, we had users control facial expressions of 3D avatar by using the system. This paper evaluates the results.

  • This paper presents a facial animation and expression control method that enables the animator to select any facial frames from the facial expression space, whose expression transfer paths the system can setup automatically. Our system creates the facial expression space from approximately 2500 captured facial frames. To create the facial expression space, we get distance between pairs of feature points on the face and visualize the space of expressions in 2D space by using the Multidimensional scaling(MDS). To setup most suitable expression transfer paths, we classify the facial expression space into four field on the basis of any facial expression state. And the system determine the state of expression in the shortest distance from every field, then the system transfer from the state of any expression to the nearest state of expression among thats. To complete setup, our system continue transfer by find second, third, or fourth near state of expression until finish. If the animator selects any key frames from facial expression space, our system setup expression transfer paths automatically. We let animators use the system to create example animations or to control facial expression, and evaluate the system based on the results.

  • The existing ad hoc network protocols suffer the scalability problem due to the inherent characteristics of node mobility. Cluster-based routing protocols divide the member nodes into a set of clusters and perform a hierarchical routing between these clusters. This hierarchical feature help to improve the scalability of ad hoc network routing. However, previous k-hop cluster-based routing protocols face another problems, that is, control overhead of the cluster headers. This paper proposes a novel k-hop cluster-based routing scheme with delegation functions for mobile ad hoc networks. The scheme employs is based on tree topology to manage cluster members in effectively. The cluster headers do not manage the routing table for whole members, while the header keeps the routing table for its neighbor members and the member list for one hop over nodes within k-hop cluster. Then the in-between leveled nodes manage the nested nodes which is structured in the lower level. Therefore, the proposed mechanism can reduce some control overhead of the cluster leaders.

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm that detects and separates the occluding and occluded objects in a 2D image. An input image is represented by the attributed graph where a node corresponds to a surface and an arc connecting two nodes describes the adjacency of the nodes in the image. Each end of arc is weighted by relation value which tells the number of edges connected to the surface represented by the node in the opposite side of the arc. In attributed graph, homogeneous nodes pertained to a same object always construct one of three special patterns which can be simply classified by comparison of relation values of the arcs. The experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithm efficiently separates the objects overlapped arbitrarily, and that this approach of separating objects before matching operation reduces the matching time significantly by simplifying the matching problem of overlapped objects as the one of individual single object.

  • Inspired by the increasing popularity of cosmetic-related mobile application as a tool for instant beautification, the present study examined colors of virtual makeup templates and makeup looks. A survey study was performed by thirty-six respondents to determine the top three desirable virtual makeup templates among nineteen templates. The templates of 'Bella', 'Hilary' and 'Cara' were then analyzed by makeup specialists and color experts for the evaluation of their makeup design and colors. Each color feature of three makeup templates were also evaluated through statistical analysis of ANOVA on the measure of $L^*a^*b^*$ crossed with five types of face elements on three types of virtual makeup images. Overall results indicate that Korean female users in their 20s and 30s preferred a similar makeup concept appeared in makeup template and key worlds. They also preferred a pale skin tone with higher lightness and a slightly higher saturated lip color as an emphasis than other features.

  • The aim of the experimental studies described in this paper is to investigate the effects of the face/eye/mouth areas using dynamic facial expressions and static facial expressions on emotional recognition. Using seven-seconds-displays, experiment 1 for basic emotions and experiment 2 for complex emotions are executed. The results of two experiments supported that the effects of dynamic facial expressions are higher than static one on emotional recognition and indicated the higher emotional recognition effects of eye area on dynamic images than mouth area. These results suggest that dynamic properties should be considered in emotional study with facial expressions for not only basic emotions but also complex emotions. However, we should consider the properties of emotion because each emotion did not show the effects of dynamic image equally. Furthermore, this study let us know which facial area shows emotional states more correctly is according to the feature emotion.

  • Purpose: The nose is the most prominent skeletal feature of the face and is thus prone to frequent injury. Closed reduction of nasal bone fractures can be performed under general or local anesthesia. However, the benefits and the drawbacks in either form of anesthesia chosen are seldom perceived by the surgeon. A retrospective study was performed to assess the differences in the outcome among the two groups subjected to surgery under different type of anesthesia and to introduce our method of local anesthesia and its adequacy. Methods: Two hundred and fifteen patients during a 2-year period were included in the study. 2% Lidocaine mixed with 1:100,000 epinephrine was injected on the anterior ethmoid nerve and the periosteum. Assessment factors included intra-operative adequacy of analgesia, post-operative analgesic requirement and functional and aesthetic outcome of surgery. Results: 19 patients were manipulated under general anesthesia and 196 patients were manipulated under local anesthesia on the anterior ethmoidal nerve and dorsal periosteum. No statistically signigicant variable in performance of surgery could be attributed to the mode of anesthesia employed(p > 0.05). Four patients experienced complications after reduction. One developed septal deviation and three nasal obstruction. But, no secondary operations were needed. Conclusion: Anterior ethmoidal nerve block and dorsal periosteal injection of 2% Xylocaine, combined with topical intranasal 4% lidocaine and epinephrine provided sufficient analgesia comparable to that of general anesthesia.
