A fiber laser of which wavelength was scanned by an intra-cavity FP (Fabry-Perot) filter was used to interrogate a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor array. We calculated the wavelength variation of the fiber laser using quadrature signal processing with an unbalanced M/Z (Mach-Zehnder) interferometer and time-delayed sampling technique. The calculated wavelengths are mapped to corresponding temporal reflection peaks from the sensor array, which enables more accurate and stable interrogation without the problems caused by the FP filter's nonlinear characteristics. Wavelength resolution of ∼20 pm was obtained in our experimental setup, which could have been greatly enhanced with faster phase modulation.
Fiber optic sensor is widely used in measuring acoustic and vibration. Especially interferometric sensors are more suitable to measure the acoustic signal. In this paper, a Fabry-Perot interferometric fiber optic sensor was used to measure flow induced vibration. This vibration also measured using an accelerometer, and the data was compared to one other. The venture, nozzle, drop barrel, and rapid expansion in the pipeline are the measuring objects. The flow rate is changed from 50 L/min to 150 L/min and the average flow velocity was about 7 m/s. Based on the experimental results the suggested fiber optic sensor detects flow induced vibration effectively. Therefore, this kind of fiber optic sensor can be applied to the monitoring the flow induced noise and vibration such as pipelines, cables, buildings.

This paper analyzes and accesses the gain of optically pumped surface-normal MQW optical amplifiers. The proposed amplifiers have the advantage of polarization independence, high coupling efficiency to and from optical fibers, and flexibility of operating wavelength. We analyzed the gain characteristics of 100 - 200-period MQWs and verified the dependence of a strained lattice and selective doping. Theoretical analysis of such MQWs showsa single-pass gain of 3 dB with broad operation bandwidth. A single-pass gain of 2.6 dB is obtained experimentally in an InGaAs/InGaAlAs MQW amplifier, which is compared with calculations. The use of Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) structure in an optical amplifier is a useful way to increase the gain, but causes a problem of narrow operation bandwidth when the single-pass gain is low. Therefore, a single-pass gain above 2to 3 dB is a prerequisite to achieve both a high gain and moderate operation bandwidth in FPI-structured opticalamplifiers. We have designed an FPI-structured surface-normal optical amplifier both with a high gain of broad operation bandwidth of 4.6mm, when a single-pass gain is 3 dB.

On-line phase tracking of an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) and experimental vibration control of a composite beam with a sensing-patch are investigated. We propose a sensing-patch for the compensation of the interferometric non-linearity. In this paper, a sensing-patch that comprises an EFPI and a piezo ceramic(PZT) is fabricated and the characteristics of the sensing-patch are experimentally investigated. A simple and practical logic is applied for the real-time tracking of optical phase of an interferometer. Experimental results show that the proposed sensing-patch does not have the non-linear behavior of conventional EFPI and hysteresis of piezoelectric material. Moreover, it has good strain resolution and wide dynamic sensing range. Finally, the vibration control with the developed sensing-patch has been performed using Fuzzy logic controller, and the possibility of sensing-patch as a sensoriactuator is considered.
A signal processing technique for interferometric fiber-optic sensors is proposed. It does not require a any special optic components such as phase modulator, $3times3$ couplers,to obtain the full sensitivity of the interferometer. Instead, it requires a reference interferometer for phase referencing and a reference mirror for intensity referencing, but intensity referencing can be done without using the r reference mirror. The new technique utilizes the frequency chirping of the laser diode to process t the sensor signal with both wide dynamic range and high sensitivity of the interferometer. It was a applied to an internal-mirrored FP interferometric temperature sensor to obtain the system noise of $4\times10^{-3\circ}C$ from I cm FP Interferometor sensor device.
A signal processing method for white light interferometry (WLI), which performs a series of analog signal processing steps to locate the central interference fringe position at high speed: is developed and applied to a WLI temperature sensor system. We found that the new method has random walk of $0.019^{\circ}C/\sqrt{Hz}$ with good linearity. However, the temperature change in the path-matching interferometer results in drift of the measured sensor output. The temperature dependence of drift in the WLI temperature sensor system, was calculated to be $1.42{\mu}m/^{\circ}C$. It is also found that the relationship between the peak spacing in the interferogram and the spacing measured by the method can be nonlinear when the fringe spacing is comparable to the coherence length of the source.
Single mode fiber optic interferometers using the Fabry-Perot configuration were embedded in a reinforced concrete structure. These interferometers investigated the character of phase shift and strain for internal loads. The 10 mm length of FFPI in the continuous length of single mode fiber (SMF) were produced with two pieces of SMF coated were $TiO_2$ dielectric film utilizing the fusion splicing technique. The fabricated fiber optic Fabry-Perot interferometer(FFPI) and the 6 mm length of steel bar were buried with specimen ($100{\times}100{\times}50\;mm^3$) which was made of concrete structure. The resin protects FFPI and fiber leads from squeezed concrete. Sensors at different point in the structure were multiplexed by TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) method and the deformation to the external loads at each point could be monitored simultaneously. The output signals were proportional to the external loads applied to the structure and the sensitivity of the sensors were $1.03^{\circ}/kg$ and $0.76^{\circ}/kg$ respectively.

Since the operation of the King Sejong Station (KSS) started in Antarctic Peninsula in 1989, there have been continuous efforts to perform the observation for the upper atmosphere. The observations during the initial period of the station include Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) and Michelson Interferometer for the mesosphere and thermosphere, which are no longer in operation. In 2002, in collaboration with York University, Canada, the Spectral Airglow Temperature Imager (SATI) was installed to observe the temperature in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) region and it has still been producing the mesopause temperature data until present. The observation was extended by installing the meteor radar in 2007 to observe the neutral winds and temperature in the MLT region during the day and night in collaboration with Chungnam National University. We also installed the all sky camera in 2008 to observe the wave structures in the MLT region. All these observations are utilized to study on the physical characteristics of the MLT region and also on the wave phenomena such as the tide and gravity wave in the upper atmosphere over KSS that is well known for the strong gravity wave activity. In this article, brief introductions for the currently operating instruments at KSS will be presented with their applications for the study of the upper atmosphere.

We demonstrate a Pr3+:YLF 639.7-nm laser with single-frequency output based on the Q-switched pre-lase technology, pumped by a fiber-coupled GaN blue laser diode. The pre-lase technology is realized by the step-type loss of the acousto-optical Q-switched device. The conclusions of the theoretical research are verified experimentally. The mode-suppression ratio was 44 dB at the single-frequency laser output. Detection by interferometer verified the realization of the stable single-frequency laser. In addition, the emission spectrum had a linewidth of 139.9 MHz, measured by Fabry-Perot interferometer. The single-frequency laser's single-peak power was over 19.7 W with 98.8-ns pulse duration, obtained under an absorption power of 1.74 W.
