  • A fiberoptic sensor using an SLD as a light source has been studied. The sensor system employs an intrinsic fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer as a sensing tip and a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer as a processing one. A free loading test for temperature application shows that the fiberoptic sensor has a wide-dynamic range as well as high resolution. Due to the inherent property of the optical fiber itself and the intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer. the fiberoptic sensor gives obvious benefits when it is applied to harsh environments to monitor some physical parameters such as temperature, strain, pressure and vibration.

  • Non-destructive test on the size and depth of cracks has been required for the safety evaluation of structures. Ultrasonic method based on laser techniques is one of the most popular non-destructive methods which overwhelm PZT based tests. In the present paper, ultrasonic was generated by high powered Q switching Nd:YAG pulse laser. Experiments were carried out using Fabry-Perot interferometer which was intensively discussed in the present study.

  • By using the single mode optical fiber, we fabricated Fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FFPI). The change over a wide range in the optical path length of a FFPI is observed. The temporal movement of the interference fringes by external condition to P.Z. T) is converted to circular motion on an oscilloscope display and then recorded with a micro-computer. The two output voltages of the D/A converters are applied to X and Y terminals of oscilloscope to display circular motion on oscilloscope. Thus the direction of phase shift can be determined with observing the direction of circular motion. The variation of the optical length can be measured by calculating the angle of spot of circle with an accuracy of λ/90 wave length due to variation of temperature in this system 2.7x10-4$^{\circ}C$.

  • A fiberoptic sensor using a low-coherence SLD as a light source has been studied. The sensor system employing an intrinsic fiber Fabry-Peort interferometer as a sensing tip and a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer as a processing one, overcomes the ambiguous reading caused by the highly periodic natrue of conventional high-precision interferometric sensors and provides unambiguous identification of the desired phase among several candidates on the transfer function of an interferometric signal. A tentative application to the temperature sensor shows the potential that the fiberoptic sensor has a side-dynamic range of $0-900^{\circ}C$ as well as reasonable resolution higher than $0.1^{\circ}C$ without ambiguity. Due to the inherent property of the optical fiber itself and the intrinsic fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer, the proposed fiberoptic sensor will give obvious benefits when it is applied to harsh environments to monitor some physical parameters such as temperature, strain, pressure and vibration.

  • We report a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI)-based multi-channel micro-spectrometer used for multi-gas measurement in the spectral range of $3-5{\mu}m$ and its gas sensing performance. The fabricated infrared (IR) spectrometer consists of two parts: an FPI on the top side for selective IR filtering and a $V_2O_5$-based IR detector array on the bottom side for the detection of the filtered IR. Experimental results show that the FPI-based multi-channel gas sensor has reliability and selectivity for simultaneously detecting environmentally harmful gases such as $CH_4$, $CO_2$, $N_2O$ and CO in the spectral range of $3-5{\mu}m$. The fabricated FPI-based multi-channel gas sensor also demonstrated that a reliable and selective detection of gas concentrations ranging from 0 to 500 ppm is feasible. In addition, the electrical characteristics demonstrate a superior response performance in regards to the selectivity in the multi-target gases.

  • The theoretical analysis and optimization of extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) opticalfiber humidity sensors are deeply investigated. For a typical dual-cavity structure composed of an optical fiber and a humidity-sensitive membrane (HSM), the changes in refractive index (RI) and initial length are discussed for polymer materials and porous oxide materials when relative humidity (RH) increases. The typical interference spectrum is simulated at different RH using MATLAB. The spectral change caused by changing HSM RI and initial length are simulated simutineously, showing different influences on humidity response. To deeply investigate the influence on RH sensitivity, the typical response sensitivity curves for different HSM lengths and air-cavity lengths are simulated. The results show that the HSM is the vital factor. Short HSM length can improve the sensitivity, but for HSM RI and length the influences on sensitivity are opposite, because of the opposite spectral-shift trend. Deep discussion and an optimization method are provided to solve this problem. According to analysis, an opaque HSM is helpful to improve sensitivity. Furthermore, if using an opaque HSM, a short air cavity and long HSM length can improve the sensor's sensitivity These results provide deep understanding and some ideas for designing and optimizing highly sensitive EFPI fiber humidity sensors.

  • In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) optical fiber tip sensor fabricated by a blade-sawing technique using a fiber optic patch cord for high-resolution temperature measurement. The sensor head consists of a short air FP cavity near the tip of a single-mode fiber patch cord tip. The temperature which we can measure is determined through a phase variation of the interference fringes in the reflective spectrum of the sensor. The fiber optic FPI sensor in this work can monitor the environmental temperature very accurately from 40 to $120^{\circ}C$. As a result, the temperature sensitivity is obtained as $38.2pm/^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, the relationship between the transmitted light intensity and full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of a Fabry-Perot filter was investigated. The measured refractive indices and absorption coefficients of the fabricated thin films were applied to the Fabry-Perot filter via simulations using optical software. Although considerable research has been conducted on Fabry-Perot filters, this study focused on the usefulness of 4.26-㎛ infrared filtering in carbon dioxide detection. Optical analysis was performed considering the effects of the thickness, refractive indices, and number of thin films in a distributed Bragg reflector. Ultimately, a clear trade-off relationship was observed wherein the transmitted light intensity decreased as the number of multilayers increased; however, the FWHM was observed to be narrower.
