The utilization of the fabric materials for lightweight building structures has attracted considerable attention due to the multiple functions and high strength-to-weight ratio. The mechanical properties of the fabric materials evolve with the loading cycle, especially for the Poisson's ratio that requires the full cyclic strain to determine the accurate values. The digital image correlation method has been justified but needs to meet the flexibility and complexity requirements of the fabric materials. This paper thus proposes a modified digital image correlation method to quantify the Poisson's ratio of fabric materials. To obtain the accurate Poisson's ratio of fabric materials in the cyclic experiments using non-contact measuring method, a speckle generation of the digital image correlation method is implemented to obtain the strain distribution and strain characteristics. The uniaxial cyclic experiments for the fabric materials are carried out in the warp, weft and 45° directions. The digital image correlation photos are taken when the material properties become stable in the cyclic loading. The results show that the strain distributions are non-uniform and dependent on the specimen directions. The reliable Poisson's ratios of the fabric materials in the warp, weft and 45° directions are 0.016, 1.2 and 2.6. The strain asymmetry at the maximum strain position is related with the weaving architecture. These observations and results are indispensable to understand the Poisson's ratios of fabric materials and to guide the proper analysis of the large-span membrane structures.
This article describes a simple and cost effective fabrication procedure by using hand lay-up technique that is employed for the manufacturing of thin-walled axi-symmetric composite shell structures with carbon, glass and hybrid woven fabric composite materials. The hand lay-up technique is very commonly used in aerospace and marine industries for making the complicated shell structures. A generic fabrication procedure is presented in this paper aimed at manufacture of plain Carbon Fabric Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) and Glass Fabric Reinforced Plastic (GFRP) shells using hand lay-up process. This paper delivers a technical breakthrough in fabrication of composite shell structures without any joints and wrinkling. The manufacture of stiffened CFRP shells, laminated CFRP shells and hybrid (carbon/glass/epoxy) composite shells which are valued by the aerospace industry for their high strength-to-weight ratio under axial loading have also been addressed in this paper. A fabrication process document which describes the major processing steps of the composite shell manufacturing process has been presented in this paper. A study of microstructure of the glass fabric/epoxy composite, carbon fabric/epoxy composite and hybrid carbon/glass/fabric epoxy composites using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) has been also carried out in this paper.
The purpose of this study is to propose the method of determining the initial fabric membrane structures surface and membrane patterning procedures. Tension structure, such as, fabric membrane structures and cable-net, is stabilized by their initial prestress and boundary condition. The process to find initial structural overall shape of tension structures produced by initial prestress called Shape Finding or Shape Analysis. One of the most important factor for the design of membrane structures is to search initial smooth surface, because unlike steel or concrete building elements which resist loads in bending, all tension structure forces are carried within the surface by membrane stress or cable tension. To obtain initial surface of fabric membrane element in large deformation analysis, the membrane element is idealized as cable using a technique with Force-density method. and that result is compared with well-known nonlinear numerical method, such as Newton-raphson method and Dynamic relaxation method. The shape resulting from Force-density method has been dealt with as the initial membrane shape and used patterning procedures.
In this paper, a representative unit volume (RUV) model was employed to simulate thermoforming process of carbon fabric-polymeric foam sandwich structures. Thermoforming simulations, which capture crimp angles and amplitude changes of carbon fabric with respect to different types of foams under the operating pressure were conducted with the help of RUV model. Changed shapes of tow structure after thermoforming were reflected in the two dimensional to determine mechanical properties of skin parts, i.e_ carbon fabric composites after thermoforming. Bending simulations with respect to different foam systems as well as different moduli of carbon fabric composites were successfully carried out by using properties obtained from two-dimensional analyses.
The thermoelastic behaviors of an inflatable fabric membrane structure for use in a stratospheric airship envelope are experimentally and numerically investigated. Mechanical tensile properties of the membrane material at room, high, and low temperatures are measured using an $Instron^{(R)}$ universal testing machine and an $Instron^{(R)}$ thermal chamber. To characterize the nonlinear behavior of the inflated membrane structure due to wrinkling, the bending behavior of an inflated cylindrical boom made of a fabric membrane is observed at various pressure levels. Moreover, the envelope of a stratospheric airship is numerically modeled based on the thermoelastic properties of the fabric membrane obtained from experimental data, and the wrinkled deformed shape induced by a thermal load is analyzed.
Architectural fabrics are now used in membrane structure with the merits of free shape, lightness and opened up new possibility for the design of new building structures. Recently PVC, PVF, PVDF, PTFE coated fabric for using the membrane structures. However, clear standards for the design and construction is not exist because of the lack of Architectural fabric research. In this paper, Flammable properties of PVDF, PTFE coated fabrics are obtained through the Flammability test using the Cone Calorimeter. Based on these results, identify the fire resistance property of the Architectural fabric.
The Membrane structure has a number of problems in the application of a fireproof code based on general buildings codes. Thus, the fireproof code of membrane structure is necessary to activate the construction of the membrane structure. Because it requires a systematic classification of fire retardant and flame proof performance of membrane material. Fire retardant and flame proof tests are conducted on membrane materials mostly used in current construction to propose the fire and flame retardant performance criteria of membrane materials. Fire and flame retardant tests results, PTFE membrane material with the glass fiber fabric have a limit-combustible performance. PVDF membrane material with the polyester fabric does not ensure the fire retardant performance, but this membrane material has the flame retardant performance of a thick fabric. Also, ETFE does not ensure the fire retardant performance, but this membrane material has the flame retardant of a thin fabric.
The use of low-ductility welded wire fabric (WWF) as a main tensile reinforcement in concrete slabs compromises the ductility of concrete structures. Lower ductility in concrete structures can lead to brittle and catastrophic failure of the structures. This paper presents the experimental study carried out on eight simply supported one-way slabs to study the structural behavior of concrete slabs reinforced with low-ductility WWF and steel fibers. The different types of steel fibers used were crimped fiber, hooked-end fiber and twincone fiber. The experimental results show that the ductility behavior of the slab specimens with low-ductility reinforcement was significantly improved with the inclusion of $40kg/m^3$ of twincone fiber. Distribution of cracks was prominent in the slabs with twincone fiber, which also indicates the better distribution of internal forces in these slabs. However, the slab reinforced only with low-ductility reinforcement failed catastrophically with a single minor crack and without appreciable deflection.
