  • This study is an empirical research based on data analysis obtained by surveying 655 adult men and women. The notable findings are as follow: First, overall, individuals' perception of extramarital affair is negative, but about 16.4% respondents have a positive perception of it. Second, the respondents have a more critical perception of their spouse's extramarital affairs compared to their own. Thirdly, the less critical perception of extramarital affair, the more acceptance of my extramarital relationship, the less tolerance of my spouse's extramarital relationship regardless marital status. Forth, while the less tolerance of spouse's extramarital relationship, the less openness to extramarital sex among unmarried group, the more acceptance of my own extramarital relationship, the more openness to extramarital sex among married group. Lastly, individuals' perception of extramarital relationship does not directly affect the openness to extramarital sex only among unmarried group, however, the correlation between the perception of extramarital affairs and the openness to extramarital sex is fully mediated by the effect of unacceptance of spouse's extramarital affairs. The moderating effect of marital status is proved.

  • The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the mediating effects of the acceptance of my extramarital relations, as well as the effects of the individual's openness and emotional isolation on the tolerance of spouse's extramarital affairs. This study is an empirical research based on data analysis obtained by surveying 655 adult men and women. The notable findings are as follow: First, while the openness and emotional isolation does not have direct effect on the tolerance of spouse's extramarital relationship, the direct effect of that on the acceptance of my extramarital relationship is significant. Second, the more acceptance of my extramarital relationship, the less tolerance of spouse's extramarital relationship strongly. Thirdly, the full mediation effect of the acceptance of my extramarital relationship between the individual openness and the tolerance of spouse's extramarital relationship is proved. Moreover, the full mediation effect of the acceptance of mine between the emotional isolation and the tolerance of spouse's is also significant. That is, the effect of individual openness and emotional isolation on the tolerance of spouse's extramarital relationship is influenced by the acceptance of my extramarital relationship. The perception of my extramarital relationship affect the perception of spouse's extramarital relationship. • This study empirically examined the effect of married women's self-awareness on the acceptance of extra-marital relationships and the mediating effects of individuals' criticism of television's drama about infidelity. The data was obtained by conducting a survey of married women (304 persons) and was analyzed based on the Structural Equal Model (SEM). The notable findings are as follows. First, the respondents are generally less receptive to extramarital relationships. Of the total respondents, 46.7% do not accept extramarital relations. 43.8% of the respondents showed an unclear position on extra-marital relationships, and about 10% of respondents showed an accepting position on extramarital affairs. This suggests that extramarital relationships can emerge as a real issue that is important for married women. Second, self-awareness does not directly affect married women's acceptance of extramarital affairs, however, 'self-awareness' proved to have a significant effect on 'acceptance to extramarital relationships' by using 'criticism' as a full mediation effect for affair-themed TV dramas. The effects of critical thinking and the judgment of married women on the content of TV dramas containing adultery has been confirmed to be a very important aspect of married women's understanding of extramarital relationships. Some practical and political implications are discussed based on this study's findings.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the effects of the VDSPA(Vulnerability to the Different Sex's Physical Attraction) on IOM(the intention of open marriages), the mediating effect of the SAEMR(Self Acceptance of Extra-Marital Relationship) and the moderating effect of gender. This is an empirical research based on data analysis obtained by surveying 655. The notable findings are as follow: First, respondents' perceptions of their own extramarital affairs(M=2.284) and open marriages(M=2.175) are generally negative, but women were more negative than men. Second, both men and women were vulnerable to the physical attraction of the opposite sex(M=3.569), especially men than women. Third, the more vulnerable to the physical attraction of the opposite sex, the more receptive to their own infidelity. The more receptive to their own extramarital affair, the more clear their intention to open marriage. Lastly, in the case of women, it is confirmed that the vulnerability of the physical attraction of the opposite sex has a significant effect on the intention of an open marriage, with the acceptability of the one's own infidelity as a mediator. In the case of men, there is no mediating effect of accepting their own extramarital affairs, which proved to be a moderating effect by gender. Unlike men, in the case of women, it is concluded that 'accepting their own extramaritality is a critical factor that directly or indirectly has a significant effects on their intention to open marriage.

  • Nowadays, plastic surgical operations are increasingly being performed in Korea. We have gained added interest in this because some professional pictures contain plastic surgery in their venue. In the films, we intend to see the recognition of society for plastic surgeons and which field of plastic surgery. The list of movies for analysis were 'Plastic Beauty (1975)', 'Penthouse Elephant (2005)', '200 Pounds Beauty (2006)', 'Cinderella (2006)', and 'Time (2006)'. The TV dramas were 'She is looking (2005)', 'Lovers (2006-2007)', and 'Before & After Plastic Surgery Clinic (2008)'. Films were analyzed according to the following: the chief complaints and names of the operations, character of plastic surgeons, result of the operation and its possibility in reality, and its effect of plastic surgery on the life of the patients. Most of the film contained facial transplantation or the change of the face or body different from the original shape. Character type of the plastic surgeons was mostly medical realism, rather than ideal humanism. Most of the plastic surgeons have capability as a doctor; however, some of them had extramarital affairs. The surgery was successful in most of the cases, but were the patients happy with the results? This was not the case in the movies. In only one movie, '200 Pounds Beauty', the patient became happy; rest of them were eminently unhappy with the outcome. Why the discrepancy? It is difficult to analyze the minds of the people in the films, but considering that the majority of the characters in the films were rather unsavory, one may deduce that a crooked mind functions differently. Perhaps it is too much to hope for a day that will come when we will see a film that portrays the mental anguish that accompanies each and every procedure the Korean plastic surgeons make.

  • This study examines work and family life of married women employed in a manufacturing industry. Data were gathered from the use of fact-to-face interview method from a sample of 230 married working women. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows : (1) With high rates of change of job, most of the respondents remain unstable in their working situation. It was shown that the important factors influencing job satisfaction of married women are women's life cycle, degree of contribution of wife's income toward total family income, and husband's attitude toward wife's empolyment. The degree of job satisfaction is also strongly influenced by labor structural factors such as pay, work environment and fringe benefits. (2) The amount of household labor time was limited by job-related factors rather than by family-related factors, because among these working women employment itself is necessarily for their subsistance. (3) It was shown that wives participated more actively in their marital communications than their husbands. Most of the respondents showed the syncratic type of the decision making patterns, but this results does not necessarily mean wives exercised an equal power with their husbands. The economic factors and the emotional instability of the husband are the ones mostly influencing marital conflicts of the employed women. It was found that the respondents easily revealed marital conflicts related to personal problems of their husbands(such as extramarital affairs, gambling and alchoholism). However, they tried to overcome the structural conflicts related to authoritarian attitudes of their husbands or economic problems without any complaints. (4) Mothers have difficulty in controlling their adolescent children, due to the weakening of parental authority. Although most of the respondents perceived their employment as having negative impacts on their children, they still have high expectations toward their children. Inspite of low degree of father role expectations and facther role performance of their husbands, most of the respondents anticipated expressive roles as well as traditionally instrumental role from their husbands. Finally, these findings would help us determine family welfare policies in Korea. Improvements in paid and household labor structure of married women should be accomplished at the national level. Also, the acting programs for parent education, marital councelling services, and law enforcement for equal employment between men and women should be provided in our society.
