The combustion instability was experimentally investigated in model gas turbine combustor with dual swirl burner. When such instability occurs, a strong coupling between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release excites a self-sustained acoustic wave which results in a loud sound, and can even cause fatal damage to the combustor and entire system. In present study, to understand the combustion instability with a premixed mixture, the detailed periods of pressure and heat release data in unstable flame mode were investigated by various measurement methods at relatively rich condition and lean condition near flammable limits. Also, to prepare the utilization of synthetic natural gas (SNG) fuel in gas turbine system, an investigation was conducted using a simulated SNG including methane as a reference fuel to examine the effects of $H_2$ content on flame stability. These results provide that the instability due to flash-back behaviour like CIVB phenomenon occurred at rich condition, while the repetition of relighting and extinction caused the oscillation of lean condition near flammable limit. From the analysis of $H_2$ content effects, it is also confirmed that the instability frequency is proportional to the laminar burning velocity at both rich and lean condition.

Magnesium fires require early fire extinguishment due to impulsive and rapid-fire expansion that makes difficult fire fighting. For this reason, efficient early fire fighting and appropriate prevention of fire spread are considered mainly as significant fire extinction measures. However, there is a limit to developing tools for metal fire fighting, such as devices, facilities, and fire extinguishing agents, due to a lack of regulatory instruments in South Korea. It often generates challenges to early fire fighting implementation by fire responders. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate a measure for securing the efficiency of early fire fighting in magnesium. This study identified the applicability of the metal fire extinguisher used in the United States for magnesium fire through a performance test of a fire extinguishing agent for metal fire. Moreover, we implemented a free burning experiment using magnesium powder to compare varying combustion and extinction process that could occur during applying metal fire extinguishers. Finally, this study suggests measures of the use and application of metal fire extinguishers for magnesium.
The Numerical simulation was performed on the flow field around the two-dimensional rectangular bluff body in order to complement the previous experimental results of the bluff body stabilized flames [1]. For both fuel ejection configurations against an oxidizer stream, the flame stability was affected mainly by vortex structure and mixing field near bluff body. FDS(Fire Dynamic Simulator) based on the LES(Large Eddy Simulation) was employed to clarify the isothermal mixing characteristic and wake flow pattern around bluff body. The air used atmosphere and the fuel used methane. The result of counter flow configuration shows that the flow field depends on air velocity but the mixing field is influenced on the fuel velocity. At low fuel velocity the fuel mole fraction is below the flammable limit and hence the mixing is insufficient to react. Therefore, as the result, the flame formed at low fuel velocity is characterized by non-premixed flames. For the flow field of co-flow configuration, flame stability was affected by fuel velocity as well as air velocity. the vortex generated by fuel stream has counter rotating direction against the air stream. Therefore, the momentum ratio between air and fuel stream was important to decide the flame blow out limit, which is result in the characteristic of the partially premixed reacting wake near extinction.
The wrinkling in the flange and wall of a part is a predominent failure mode in stamping of sheet metal parts. In many cases this wrinkling may be eliminated by appropriate control of the blank holding force(BHF), but BHF affects the draw depth. Although the wrinkles of flange have been made in the incipient stage of drawing, if the height of wrinkles is maintained under a prescribed limit by decrease or extinction of wrinkles in the course of drawing, small BHP can be allowed so that the depth of drawing could be increased. Authors research the variation of the wrinkles in flange in the course of square cup drawing by using aluminium A1015 and aluminium alloy A5052.
Simulation is performed to analyze the characteristics of turbulent spray combustion in a diesel engine condition. An extended Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) model is employed to resolve coupling between chemistry and turbulence. Relevant time and length scales and dimensionless numbers are estimated at the tip and the mid spray region during spray development and combustion. The liquid volume fractions are small enough to support validity of droplets assumed as point sources in two-phase flow. The mean scalar dissipation rates (SDR) are lower than the extinction limit to show flame stability throughout the combustion period. The Kolmogorov scales remain relatively constant, while the integral scales increase with decay of turbulence. The chemical time scale decreases abruptly to a small value as ignition occurs with subsequent heat release. The Da and Ka show opposite trends due to variation in the chemical time scale. More work is in progress to identify the spray combustion regimes.
Explosive evaporative removal process of biological tissue by absorption of a CW laser has been simulated by using gelatin and a multimode Nd:YAG laser. Because the point of maximun temperature of laser-irradiated gelatin exists below the surface due to surface cooling, evaporation at the boiling temperature is made explosively from below the surface. The important parameters of this process are the conduction loss to laser power absorption (defined as the conduction-to-laser power parameter, Nk), the convection heat transfer at the surface to conduction loss (defined as Bi), dimensionless extinction coefficient (defined as Br.), and dimensionless irradiation time (defined as Fo). Dependence of Fo on Nk and Bi has been observed by experiment, and the results have been compared with the numerical results obtained by solving a 2-dimensional conduction equation. Fo and explosion depth (from the surface to the point of maximun temperature) are increased when Nk and Bi are increased. To find out the minimum laser power for explosive evaporative removal process, steady state analysis has been also made. The limit of Nk to induce evaporative removal, which is proportional to the inverse of the laser power, has been obtained.
The Numerical simulation was performed on the flow field around the two-dimensional rectangular bluff body in order to simulate an engine nacelle fire and to complement the previous experimental results of the bluff body stabilized flames. Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) based on the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) was employed to clarify the characteristics of reacting flow around bluff body. The overall reaction was considered and the constant for reaction was determined from flame extinction limits of experimental results. The air used atmosphere and the fuel used methane. For both fuel ejection configurations against an oxidizer stream, the flame stability and flame mode were affected mainly by vortex structure near bluff body. In the coflow configuration, air velocity at the flame extinction limit are increased with fuel velocity, which is comparable to the experiment results. Comparing with the isothermal flow field, the reacting flow produces a weak and small recirculation zone, which is result in the reductions of density and momentum due to temperature increase by reaction in the wake zone.

It is known that he pollutant emitted from the combustion process of marine fuel oil causes air pollution and harmful effects to the human body. Accordingly, IMO regulates pollutants emitted from ships. However, the regulation of Particulate Matter (PM) is still in the process of debate, so preemptive action is needed. Fundamental research on PM is essential. In this study, the Dimensionless Light Extinction Constant ($K_e$) of fuel oil used in marine diesel engines was measured and analyzed to construct the basic data of the PM generated from marine-based fuel oil. The fuel oil used in the land diesel engine was measured in the same way for character comparison. Both fuel oils differ in sulfur content and density. The $K_e$ was measured via the optical method using a 633 nm laser and was determined by using the volume fraction of PM collected by the gravimetric filter method. The $K_e$ of the PM discharged from marine fuel oil is 8.28, and the land fuel oil is 8.44. The $K_e$ of two fuel oils was similar within the measurement uncertainty range. However, it was found by comparison with the value obtained by the Rayleigh-Limit solution that the light scattering portion could be large. Also, it was found that light extinction characteristics could be different due to the relationship between light transmittance and collected mass.

The effects of preferential diffusion of hydrogen in interacting counterflow $H_2$-air and CO-air premixed flames were investigated numerically. The global strain rate was varied in the range $30-5917s^{-1}$, where the upper bound of this range corresponds to the flame-stretch limit. Preferential diffusion of hydrogen was studied by comparing flame structures for a mixed average diffusivity with those where the diffusivities of H, $H_2$ and $N_2$ were assumed to be equal. Flame stability diagrams are presented, which show the mapping of the limits of the concentrations of $H_2$ and CO as a function of the strain rate. The main oxidation route for CO is $CO+O_2{\rightarrow}CO_2+O$, which is characterized by relatively slow chemical kinetics; however, a much faster route, namely $CO+OH{\rightarrow}CO_2+H$, can be significant, provided that hydrogen from the $H_2$-air flame is penetrated and then participates in the CO-oxidation. This modifies the flame characteristics in the downstream interaction between the $H_2$-air and CO-air flames, and can cause the interaction characteristics at the rich and lean extinction boundaries not to depend on the Lewis number of the deficient reactant, but rather to depend on chemical interaction between the two flames. Such anomalous behaviors include a partial opening of the upper lean extinction boundary in the interaction between a lean $H_2$-air flame and a lean CO-air flame, as well as the formation of two islands of flame sustainability in a partially premixed configuration with a rich $H_2$-air flame and a lean CO-air flame. At large strain rates, there are two islands where the flame can survive, depending on the nature of the interaction between the two flames. Furthermore, the preferential diffusion of hydrogen extends both the lean and the rich extinction boundaries.

Nonlinear dynamics of pulsating instability-diffusional-thermal instability with Lewis numbers sufficiently higher than unity-in counterflow diffusion flames, is numerically investigated by imposing a Damkohler number perturbation. The flame evolution exhibits three types of nonlinear behaviors, namely, decaying pulsating behavior, diverging behavior (which leads to extinction), and stable limit-cycle behavior. The stable limit-cycle behavior is observed in counterflow diffusion flames, but not in diffusion flames with a stagnant mixing layer. The critical value of the perturbed Damkohler number, which indicates the region where the three different flame behaviors can be observed, is obtained. A stable simple limit cycle, in which two supercritical Hopf bifurcations exist, is found in a narrow range of Damkohler numbers. As the flame temperature is increased, the stable simple limit cycle disappears and an unstable limit cycle corresponding to subcritical Hopf bifurcation appears. The period-doubling bifurcation is found to occur in a certain range of Damkohler numbers and temperatures, which leads to extend the lower boundary of supercritical Hopf bifurcation.
