  • Strengthening as well as correcting unsightly deflections of reinforced concrete (RC) beam may be accomplished by retrofitting. An innovative way to do this retrofitting that is proposed in this study utilizes turnbuckle to apply external post-tensioning. This Turnbuckle External Post-Tensioning (T-EPT) was experimentally proven to improve the serviceability and load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete beams. The T-EPT system comprises a braced steel frame and a turnbuckle mechanism to provide the prestressing force. To further develop the T-EPT, this research aims to develop a numerical scheme to analyze the structural performance of reinforced concrete beams with this kind of retrofitting. The fiber method analysis was used as the numerical scheme. The fiber method is a simplified finite element method that is used in this study to predict the elastic and inelastic behavior of a reinforced concrete beam. With this, parametric study was conducted so that the effective setup of doing the T-EPT retrofitting may be determined. Different T-EPT configurations were investigated and their effectiveness evaluated. Overall, the T-EPT was effective in improving the serviceability condition and load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete beam.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP) have superior mechanical and chemical properties in comparison with conventional materials. And post-tensioning method has been used for structural reinforcement of RC structures due to easy installation and good effect of resisting capacity of structures. But the higher cost of CFRP and the loss of prestressing force with time are considered the major problems to use it. In this study, CFRP Strips and external post tensioning for rehabilitation of old concrete structures were adapted and optimal combination of these methods is considered. A total of 17 concrete members were made and tested. The types and numbers of CFRP strips and post-tensioning types were selected as major test variables. From test results, it is shown that the concrete members that post tensioned and bonded CFRP strips has a pronounced effect on the strength and deformational behavior. This present study indicates that external temporally post tensioning can reduce the amount of CFRP strips required and the combination of temporally post tensioning and CFRP strips may meet the strength and ductility requirements of old structures.

  • It analyzed the mechanical behaviors of non-ballasted railway bridge (steel plate girder type) with ballast reinforced on the finite element analysis, field test and laboratory test far the static and dynamic responses. The major objective of this study is to investigate the effects and application of reinforcement for steel plate girder railway bridge by the external post-tensioning method. The reinforcement of non-ballast railway bridge had obviously stable dynamic behaviors due to the additional dead force which was ballast. But in case of static behaviors, static displacements and stresses had increased nearly the allowable values. Therefore we analyzed the mechanical behaviors of non-ballasted railway bridge with ballast reinforced and external post-tensioning reinforced on the finite element analysis and laboratory test for the static and dynamic behavior. As a result, the reinforcement of ballasted railway bridge the external post-tensioning method are obviously effective for the additional dead force which is ballast. • The present study applied the external post tensioning reinforcement method for reinforcing a non-ballast steel plate girder railway bridge, and the effects of the strength of tendons and the level of post-tensioning force on the dynamic behavior are experimented and analyzed. According to the results of this study, the natural frequency was increased by the strength of tendons but it was decreased by the rise of post-tensioning force and as a consequence the introduction of post-tensioning force decreased natural frequency slightly. It was analyzed that further study is need to establish the exact relations between post-tensioning force and natural frequency. In addition, it was found that the dynamic displacement, dynamic bending stress and vertical acceleration were decreased by the external post-tensioning. On the other hand, external post-tensioning increased horizontal acceleration by up to 20%, which was around 70% of vertical acceleration. This needs further study.

  • In many years, post-tensioning method has been used for structural reinforcement of RC structures due to easy installation and good quality control. This study presents practical application results for the effectiveness of structural post-tensioning reinforcement of the FCM bridge girders, cement silos and building girders. For the FCM bridges deflected excessively at the end of girders, for cement silos cracked vertically at silo surface and for building girders deflected due to heavy load from roof, the external post-tensioning method was used for uplifting deflected girders and closing cracks with increasing resisting capacity of the structures. It was demonstrated that all the items were rehabilitated nearly to the initial construction status according to the field test results.

  • This study was performed to compare the load-carrying capacities of the reinforced concrete structure between the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method and the external post-tensioning method and further estimate the effective stress of the reinforced material by analyzing the experimental reinforcing effect of each method and the behavior resulting from each method. As a result, it was found out that the effective stress of the carbon fiber reinforcement according to the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method had an unexpected value, and also, bearing of the stress was found to be far from sharing thereof. That is to say, while the carbon fiber was bearing the whole stress to some limits, it got to be momentarily ruptured as soon as it went beyond such limits. On the other hand, the external post-tensioning method has the advantage of inducing an initial effective stress by introducing a strain, and thus, it was found that behavior or bearing of the stress was also found to be a solid behavior of the steel wire. This method was also found to be more efficient and excellent than the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method in the reinforcing effect or securing the effective stress. Accordingly, we were to discuss the effective stress as comparatively examined, focusing on deriving of the more enhanced reinforcing effect on the basis of the experiment to which the field characteristic is added.
