The purpose of this study is to evaluate the anchorage capacity of longitudinal bars for reinforced concrete exterior beam - column joints with steel fiber volume fractions. For this purpose, the steel fiber volume fraction was set to 0, 1, 2%, and the performance was compared with that of each other specimens. According to the test results, the maximum strength of EX-HK-NJR-0 decreased by 13% compared with the control specimen and EX-HK-NJR-1 decreased by 3% compared to the control specimen. However, when 2% of steel fiber was mixed, the maximum strength increased about 56% compared to the control specimen. The energy dissipation capacity of EX-HK-NJR-0 (when no transverse steel bars are placed) decreased by 61% compared to the control specimen. In addition, the energy dissipation capacity of the specimens with a steel fiber content of 1% decreased by 5% and 2% increased by 94% compared to control specimen. EX-HK-NJR-1,2 and the control specimen EX-HK-JR-0 experienced yielding of the reinforcing bars at the column interface before maximum strength development. However, when the EX-HK-NJR-0, the reinforcing bars at the column interface experienced yielding after maximum strength development. Therefore, reinforcement of steel fiber is considered to reduce the required development length for yielding of steel bars.
This paper focuses on the study of seismic behavior of steel reinforced concrete special-shaped column-beam joints. Six specimens, which are designed according to the principle of strong-member and weak-joint core, are tested under low cyclic reversed load. Key parameters include the steel form in column section and the ratio of column limb height to thickness. The failure mode, load-displacement curves, ductility, stiffness degradations, energy dissipation capacity and shear deformation of joint core of the test subassemblies are analyzed. The results indicate that SRC special-shaped column-beam joints have good seismic behavior. All specimens failed due to the shear failure of the joint core, and the failure degree between the two sides of joint core is similar for the exterior joint but different for the corner joint. Compared to the joints with channel steel truss, the joints with solid web steel skeleton illustrate better ductility and energy dissipation capacity, but the loading capacity and stiffness are roughly close. With the increasing of the ratio of column limb height to thickness, the joints illustrate higher loading capacity and stiffness, better energy dissipation capacity, but worse ductility.
Deficient beam-column joints of reinforced concrete (RC) structures designed to older practices and codes often lead to destructive local or global failures. A strengthening technique for these joints based on the use of the new and innovative Carbon-FRP (C-FRP) ropes is presented and investigated. The C-FRP ropes are diagonally placed in superficial notches on the two sides of the joint. Two full scale external substandard joint subassemblages with the same characteristics, one unstrengthened and one strengthened with diagonally applied C-FRP ropes, are constructed and tested in cyclic loading. Special attention has been given to the elaboration of the acquired test measurements. The extracted conclusions are based on the comparative study of the hysteretic responses of the specimens, the observed maximum load envelopes, the comparisons of the joint body shear deformations as measured using diagonally mounted LVTDs, the calculated nominal principal stresses developed in the joint regions, the assessed joint damage as expressed by the damage index by Park and Ang and finally the calculated values of the equivalent damping ratio. From these comparisons it is concluded that application of diagonally mounted C-FRP ropes on the two sides of the joint body of exterior connections is an efficient easy-to-apply technique for the strengthening of substandard RC joints.
Prior to the introduction of modern seismic guidelines, it was a common practice to provide straight bar anchorage for beam bottom reinforcement of gravity load designed building. Exterior joints with straight bar anchorages for beam bottom reinforcements are susceptible to sudden anchorage failure under load reversals and hence require systematic seismic upgradation. Hence in the present study, an attempt is made to upgrade exterior beam-column sub-assemblage of a three storied gravity load designed (GLD) building with single steel haunch. Analytical formulations are presented for evaluating the haunch forces in single steel haunch retrofit. Influence of parameters that affect the efficacy and effectiveness of the single haunch retrofit are also discussed. The effectiveness of the single haunch retrofit for enhancing seismic performance of GLD beam-column specimen is evaluated through experimental investigation under reverse cyclic loading. The single steel haunch retrofit had succeeded in preventing the anchorage failure of beam bottom bars of GLD specimen, delaying the joint shear damage and partially directing the damage towards the beam. A remarkable improvement in the load carrying capacity of the upgraded GLD beam-column sub-assemblage is observed. Further, a tremendous improvement in the energy dissipation of about 2.63 times that of GLD specimen is observed in the case of upgraded GLD specimen. The study also underlines the efficacy of single steel haunch retrofit for seismic upgradation of deficient GLD structures.
An anatomically detailed elderly human body model is under development. Using the anthropometric database of domestic nation-wide size survey, SizeKorea, a standard size and shape of 50th %tile elderly was constructed. Through the local recruitment process, a male volunteer with 71 years of age, 163cm of height and 63kg of weight has been selected. The exterior (skin) and interior (skeleton and organ) geometries were acquired from whole body 3D laser scan and various medical images such as CT, X-ray, and Ultrasonic of the volunteer. A particular attention has been paid into the combining process of exterior and interior geometries especially for joint articulation positions since they were measured at different postures (sitting vs. supine). A whole ribcage of PMHS which possessed similar anthropometry and age of standard 50th %tile elderly was prepared and dissected for the precise gauge of cortical rib bone thickness distributions. After completing the morphological construction of elderly human body, the finite element modeling will be processed by meshing elements and assigning mechanical properties to various biological tissues which reflect the aging effect.
Cladding that finishes the exterior of a building could enhance the value of the building, and shape control is an important factor. With the recent development of 3D printing, cementitious claddings were printed by 3D printer in China, U.S.A and elsewhere. On the other hand, the structural safety of the exterior panel should be examined, as casualties occur when the exterior panel fails due to typhoon or impact. Cement-based cladding is reinforced by wire mesh to improve safety. Introducing 3D printing composite system with polymer and cement, makes it possible to produce claddings fast and accurate. Prior to the development of 3D printing cementitious cladding, the major parameters influencing the optimal shape were identified based on structural performance. The wind load, joint, and bond behavior between polymer and cement were considered. Polymer laminate shape, order, and thickness were variables, and finite element analysis was performed.
The use of local two-sided and three-sided jacketing for the repair and strengthening of reinforced concrete beam-column joints damaged by severe earthquakes is investigated experimentally and analytically. Two exterior beam-column joint specimens ($O_1$ and $O_2$) were submitted to a series of cyclic lateral loads to simulate severe earthquake damage. The specimens were typical of existing older structures built in the 1960s and 1970s. The specimens were then repaired and strengthened by local two-sided or three-sided jacketing according to UNIDO Manual guidelines. The strengthened specimens ($RO_1$ and $RO_2$) were then subjected to the same displacement history as that imposed on the original specimens. The repaired and strengthened specimens exhibited significantly higher strength, stiffness and better energy dissipation capacity than the original specimens.
This study investigated headed bar anchorage of exterior beam column joints in nuclear power plants. In nuclear power plant structures, anchorage of headed bar is recommended to satisfy ACI 349-01 App. B that are based on the Concrete Capacity Design (CCD) method. However, CCD method may lead to very conservative results for beam column joints where head is anchored within the diagonal strut and concrete is confined by transverse rebar. Compared with results of 5 joint specimens, the anchorage capacities calculated by ACI 349-01 are underestimated by 70-90%. Therefore, it is necessary to amend ACI 349-01 for the mechanical anchorage in beam column joints.

In the analysis and design of reinforced concrete frames beam-column joints are sometimes assumed as rigid. This simplifying assumption can be unsafe because it is likely to affect the distributions of internal forces and moments, reduce drift and increase the overall load-carrying capacity of the frame. This study is concerned with the relevance of shear deformation of beam-column joints, in particular of exterior ones, on the quasi-static behavior of regular reinforced concrete sway frames. The included parametric studies of a simple sub-frame model reveal that the quasi-static monotonic behavior of unbraced regular reinforced concrete frames is prone to be significantly affected by the deformation of beam-column joints.
