The purpose of this study were to measured peak torque of lumbar extensor at various degrees and to compare with the choronic low back pain patients and healthy subjects back extensor peak torque. Research subject are fifty choronic low back pain patients and fifty healthy subjects are Dong-a university hospital visited to 2000, January since 1999, august none lumbosacral traumal past history and neurologic disorder that is twenty generation, thirty generation, forty generation, fifty generation, sixty generation in healthy subjects and twenty generation, thirty generation, forty generation, fifty generation, sixty generation in cause choronic low back pain patients. The result were as follows. 1. There were each generation choronic low back pain patients and healthy subjects back extensor peak torque are consideration (p<.05). 2. Twenty generation was all degree of angle in lumbar extention peak torque in choronic low back pain patients back extensor are lower than healthy subjects(p<.05). 3. Thirty generation was all degree of angle in lumbar extention peak torque in choronic low back pain patients back extensor are lower than healthy subjects(p<.05). 4. Forty generation was all degree of angle in lumbar extention peak torque in choronic low back pain patients back extensor are lower than healthy subjects(p<;.05). 5. Fifty generation was all degree of angle in lumbar extention peak torque in choronic low back pain patients back extensor are lower than healthy subjects(p<.05). 6. Sixty generation was all degree of angle in lumbar extention peak torque in choronic low back pain patients back extensor are lower than healthy subjects(p<.05).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate comparisons of vastus medialis (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle activities according to different heights during drop landing in flatfooted adults. Methods: Fifteen subjects with a flat foot arch and 15 subjects with a normal feet arch were participated. Subjects performed a double limb drop landing task from 20, 40, and 60 cm heights. Surface electromyography was used to measure the muscle activities of the VMO and VL during drop landing. Results: There were significant differences of muscle activities in the VMO, VL, and the VMO and VL ratio between groups. The electromyography values of VMO, VL, and the VMO and VL ratio in the normal group were significantly greater than in the flat foot group, and muscle activities and the VMO and VL ratio significantly increased with landing heights in the both groups. Conclusion: Our results indicated that muscle activity patterns of VOM and VL in the flat foot group were lower at heights than in the normal group, so calf tightness was negative effects on balance and gait ability, so assessment of muscle activation patterns in the knee extensors should be considered during exercise and treatment of flat feet.
The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle activities of the thoracic extensor(TE) and lumbar extensor(LE) during trunk lift (TL) exercise according to exercise position. Seventeen healthy subjects with no medial history of back pain were recruited for this study. Subjects performed the TL exercise in prone, quadruped and heel-sitting positions. The activities of the TE and LE were measured using surface electromyography during TL exercise in each exercise position. A one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare the normalized muscle activities of the TE and LE and the TE/LE ratio. The results showed that there was not significant effect of exercise position on the muscle activities of TE(p>.05). However, there was significant effect of exercise position on the muscle activities of LE and the TE/LE ratio(p>.05). Post hoc pair-wise comparisons with Bonferroni correction showed that both muscle activities of LE and TE/LE ratio in prone position were significantly different in those in heel-sitting and quadruped positions, during TL exercise, respectively. The TE/LE ratio was the greatest for TL exercise in heel-sitting position. Therefore, for selective activation of the TE muscle, we recommend performing the TL exercise in heel-sitting or quadruped position.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the effects of unilateral muscle fatigue in knee and ankle joints on balance and gait in healthy adults. Methods: Exercise inducing muscle fatigue in the knee joint consisted of concentric and eccentric contraction of dominant knee extensors in healthy adults by using the Leg Extension Rehap exercise machine (HUR, Finland). Exercise inducing muscle fatigue in the ankle joint was composed of voluntary contractions and forced contractions of the dominant plantar flexors in healthy adults. Exercises to induce muscle fatigue in the knee and ankle joints were performed until the subject complained of fatigue or pain, the occurrence of muscle fatigue was confirmed by electromyography. We measured static and dynamic balance using the Good Balance system and gait performance by RS-scan. Results: Static and dynamic balance ability and spatial-temporal gait decreased significantly after muscle fatigue in knee and ankle joint. Conclusion: These results show that unilateral muscle fatigue of the lower extremities affected postural control and gait. Therefore, therapists and sport trainers should minimize the risks of fall and injuries related to unilateral muscle fatigue.
The isometric torque of the elbow flexor and extensor muscles were measured for 6 seconds at a joint angle of 90$^{\circ}$ , in 10 normal subjects (control group) and 10 hemiplegic subjects(patient group), using the Cybex NORMTM System. The peak torque, the time to peak torque were measured for each exercise. In addition, heart rate and blood pressure were recorded simultaneously at rest and immediately following exercise completion at 1 and 3m mutes. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 8.0 for Windows software and mean and standard deviations were calculated. The results are as follows. 1) In the patient involved group. the isometric values for flexors and extensors were significantly lower than in the normal nondominant group(p<.05). 2) The extensor to flexor strength ratio in the isometric mode was 121.0% in the patient involved group compared with 78.7%in the normal nondominant group, a significant difference(p<.05). 3) The mean increment ratio was increased 19.0% for systolic blood pressure and 25.2% for disatolic blood pressure in the patient group. 4) The mean increment ratio was increased 36.0% heart rate in the patient group.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of force of ipsilateral versus contralateral cane usage on knee moments in healthy young adults. Methods: A convenience sample of 10 subjects volunteered for this study. Subjects walked over a force plate under three different conditions; unaided and ipsilateral cane and contralateral cane. Analysis of data on moment of the knee joint and ground reaction force was performed using the OrthoTrak program. Results: Flexion moment of the knee was decreased with the contralateral cane, but increased with the ipsilateral cane compared with normal gait. Extension moment of the knee was decreased with the contralateral cane compared with normal gait(p<0.05) and it was showed a greater decrease with the contralateral cane than with the ipsilateral cane gait(p=0.00). Valgus moment of the knee joint was increased with the ipsilateral cane but decreased with the contralateral cane. Vertical ground peak force was decreased with the ipsilateral cane compared with normal gait (p<0.05). Conclusion: The following conclusions were drawn from our data. Contralateral cane gait is more efficacious for persons with weakness of knee extensors, however, for a patient with varus deformity, the cane should be used in the ipsilateral hand.
Purpose: Although some studies indicate that the Sorensen test may not be used to examine back muscles such as the erector spinae, alternatives to the back-extension test are rarely suggested. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate an effective way to stimulate the erector spinae muscles by adding a component of trunk rotation and lateral bending to general back extensions. Methods: A total of 18 healthy, physically active participants performed simple trunk extension, extension with trunk rotation, and extension with lateral bending. Surface electromyography responses of the latissimus dorsi, thoracic, and lumbar levels of the erector spinae; the gluteus maximus; and the biceps femoris muscles were investigated during these 3 conditions of modified back extension tests. Results: The simple trunk extension exercise caused significant increases in activity of the gluteus maximus and biceps femoris muscles as compared to the extension with rotation and lateral bending exercises. The extension with trunk rotation exercise showed significantly greater activation in the thoracic and lumbar levels of the erector spinae and in the latissimus dorsi as compared to the other exercises. The index measuring subjective difficulty was significantly lower in the simple trunk extension exercise as compared to the extension with trunk rotation and extension with lateral bending exercises. Conclusion: The present study suggests that extension with trunk rotation has the advantage of stimulating the para-spinal muscles, while simple trunk extension may not be adequate to selectively simulate the para-spinal muscles but may be appropriate for examining global trunk extensors.

A 57-year-old male suffered from tingling and paraesthesia on radial side of right hand. We carried out exploration, the process being done, a radial artery passing between the two branches of bifurcated superficial radial nerve was found by accident. Then we performed dissection of the radial artrery a little more distally. It was passing above the extensors of thumb to anstomical snuff box. We treated it with ligating the radial artery, which was done a little above the bifurcated site of superficial radial nerve after angiography of upper extremity. While we were following this procedure, we noticed that symptoms had improved a lot. To our knowlege, neuropathy, by itself of superficial radial nerve by the radial artery with anatomical variation has never been reported and therefore we report this case.
The purpose of this study was to investigate comparative analysis of the vertical ground reaction force variables during landing from vertical jump blocking in volleyball through GRF analysis system. The subjects participated in this study were 6 male university volleyball player and 6 male acted as a control group. The results are as follows: 1. The skilled group was longer than the unskilled group in flight time during vertical jump blocking. 2. The skilled group was faster than the unskilled group in tFz2 during landing from vertical jump blocking. 3. The skilled group was higher than the unskilled group in Fz2 during landing from vertical jump blocking. 4. The skilled group was higher than the unskilled group in Fz2LR during landing from vertical jump blocking. 5. The skilled group was higher than the unskilled group in impulse during landing from vertical jump blocking. Consequently, during landing from vertical jump, the landing strategy of the skilled group was found as a form of a stiff landing. Therefore, this landing strategy will be required to strengthen of hip and knee extensors and ankle plantar flexors for injury prevention.
Objective : Radial nerve palsy is characterized by palsy or paralysis of extensors of the wrist and digits, as well as the forearm supinators. Very proximal lesions also may affect the triceps. Numbness occurs on the dorsoradial aspect of the hand and the dorsal aspect of the radial 3 and 1/2 digits. We observed 7 patients with radial nerve palsy, the results are as follows. Methods & Results : All patients were treated by the same method and treatment was performed by acupuncture and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation. the electrode were placed unilaterally on the motor points of forearm. As the result, symptoms are improved remarkably. Conclusions : Patients were treated for 5.4 weeks, 14.7 times(average). The grade was that 6 cases were good and 1 case was excellent.
