  • The purpose of this study is to historically examine the thoughts and ideas of geometry and to analyze the expression style of design applied to the mass communication such as magazines and world wide webs, by giving definitions on the ideas of geometry and the pattern of cognition. Geometry was evolved to Descartes's analytical geometry, projective geometry, non-Euclidean geometry and Topology at the end of 19th century. When geometry applies to design styles, it is devided into two field, plane geometry and solid geometry. The development of geometry was completed from the Pythagoras symbolic theory of number to Platonic spiritual geometry and Euclidean geometry. It can be studied that those have what kind of symbolic meanings and transformations on each hair design plan. It can also analized how those symbolic forms are appeared on the design form. This tendency means that there is always a try for the use of geometry as reasonable device for hair design. If the hair design and geometry have logical and artistical relation, we can make buildings which have a order, balance and harmony.

  • Distraction osteogenesis(DO) can be performed in the bony defect associated with trauma, anomaly, and various kinds of disease. The gap generated by DO is filled with growing callus : during the period of distraction, the osteogenesis is continued. However, there have been few reports about expression pattern of growth factors in newly formed bone during the consolidation periods. We performed DO in the mandibular defect case and studied the expressed pattern of growth factors. Its pattern was compared to that of the same patient. BMP-2 and -4 were strongly expressed in the DO site. Particularly, BMP-4 was not expressed in the normal mature bone, but expressed in new bone in DO. However, there was no difference in the FGF-7 expression between the sites. Therefore, strong expression of BMP-4 are related to new bone formation in DO and they may not be related to the normal homeostasis in human bone. Though FGF-7 is related to the growth of keratinocyte, it may have minimal role in the DO and normal mature bone.

  • In this paper, a method is proposed that enhances the performance of the facial expression recognition using template matching of Local Binary Pattern(LBP) histogram. In this method, the face image is segmented into blocks, and the LBP histogram is constructed to be used as the feature of the block. Block dissimilarity is calculated between a block of input image and the corresponding block of the model image. Image dissimilarity is defined as the weighted sum of the block dissimilarities. In conventional methods, the block weights are assigned by intuition. In this paper a new method is proposed that optimizes the weights from training samples. An experiment shows the recognition rate is enhanced by the proposed method.

  • The transcription of the chitin synthase genes (chss) was cell cycle-regulated in Aspergillus nidulans and the expression pattern was classified into two groups. Group one, containing chsA and chsC, showed decreasing transcription level upon entry into the S-phase and no further variation during the remainder of the cell cycle. However, group two, containing chsB, chsD, and csmA showed a sharp decrease of mRNA level upon entry into the G2-phase and an increase during the M-phase. Our results suggested that the chss, belonging to same group with the similar expression pattern during the cell cycle are functionally linked and that chsD may play a role in hyphal growth and development in A. nidulans.

  • Genetically modified domestic animals have many potential applications ranging from basic research to production agriculture. One of the goals in transgenic animal production schemes is to reliably predict the expression pattern of the foreign gene. Establishing a method to screen genetically modified embryos for transgene expression before transfer to surrogates may improve the likelihood of producing offspring with the desired expressing pattern. • Insertions of transposable elements in or near a structural gene give rise to null phenotypes, reduced levels of gene expression, or alteration on the tissue-specific pattern of gene expression. Null phenotypes often result from insertions in exons. Reduced levels of gene expression results from insertions in various regions such as promoter region, 5' non-translated region, exon and intron. The maize allele of Adh1-3F1124 is an example of alteration in the tissue-specific patetern of gene expression. Adh1-3F1124 contains a Mu element inserted 31 bp 5' to the transcriptional start site of the wild-type Adh1 activity in seeds and anaerobically-treated seedlings but normal levels in the pollen. Upon the insertion of a transposable element a certain number of host DNA sequences at the insertion site is duplcated. When transposable elements excise, all element sequences are deleted. However, the duplicated host sequences may be left intact or deleted to various extents. This results in null phenotypes, restoration of original levels of gene expression, or altered levels of gene expression. On the basis of effects of transposable-element insertions or excisions on gene expression, the usefulness of transposable ellements for studies on gene expression is discussed.

  • Microarray technology in biological science enables molecular level observations and analyses on the biological phenomina by allowing to measure the RNA expression profiles in cells. Microarray data analysis is applied in various purposes such as identifying significant genes which react to drug treatment, understanding the genome scale phenomina. In drug response experiments, the microarray-based gene expression analysis could provide meaningful information. It is sometimes needed to identify the genes which shows different expression behavior for treatment group and normal group each other. When the normal group shows the medium level expression, it is not easy to discriminate the group just by expression level comparison. This paper proposes a method which selects group-wise representative values for each gene and sets the value range of the groups in order to filter out the genes with specific pattern. It also shows some experiment results.

    • The vertebrate genome contains an endogenous retrovirus that has been inherited from the past millions of years. Although approximately 8% of human chromosomal DNA consists of sequences derived from human endogenous retrovirus (HERV) fragments, most of the HERVs are currently inactive and noninfectious due to recombination, deletions, and mutations after insertion into the host genome. Several studies suggested that Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) factors are significantly related to certain cancers. However, only limited studies have been conducted to analyze the expression of HERV derived elements at protein levels in certain cancers. Herein, we analyzed the expression profiles of HERV-K envelope (Env) and HERV-R Env proteins in eleven different kinds of cancer tissues. Furthermore, the expression patterns of both protein and correlation with various clinical data in each tissue were analyzed. The expressions of both HERV-K Env and HERV-R Env protein were identified to be significantly high in most of the tumors compared with normal surrounding tissues. Correlations between HERV Env expressions and clinical investigations varied depending on the HERV types and cancers. Overall expression patterns of HERV-K Env and HERV-R Env proteins were different in every individual but a similar pattern of expressions was observed in the same individual. These results demonstrate the expression profiles of HERV-K and HERV-R Env proteins in various cancer tissues and provide a good reference for the association of endogenous retroviral Env proteins in the progression of various cancers. Furthermore, the results elucidate the relationship between HERV-Env expression and the clinical significance of certain cancers.
