  • This paper presents the concept for the development of a pet-type robot with an emotion engine. The pet-type robot named KOBIE (KOala roBot with Intelligent Emotion) is able to interact with a person through touch. KOBIE is equipped with tactile sensors on the body for interaction with a person through recognition of his/her touching behaviors such as "Stroke","Tickle","Hit". We have covered KOBIE with synthetic fur fabric in order to can make him/her feel affection as well. KOBIE is able to also express an emotional status that varies according to the circumstances under which it is presented. The emotion engine of KOBIE's emotion expression system generates an emotional status in an emotion vector space which is associated with a predefined needs and mood models. In order to examine the feasibility of our emotion expression system, we verified a changing emotional status in our emotion vector space by a touching behavior. We specially examined the reaction of children who have interacted with three kind of pet-type robots: KOBIE, PARO, AIBO for roughly 10 minutes to investigate the children's preference for pet-type robots.

  • Ethnography, a major research method in Anthropology, has been recently applied in human-centered design research. Since ethnography has empirical, naturalistic, holistic and eclectic characteristics, it is needed a guideline to apply ethnography into design research in accordance with a characteristic of project. Design project in which ethnography is applied can be categorized by two criteria; degree of newness of project goal(existing user-potential user) and limitedness of worksite(site-oriented-work-oriented). Among work-site activities, technology in use, and user group culture, it should be decided which content to content to focus more than others and thus what kinds of research techniques to apply in the ethnographic research.Case study was to design an interior of a Korean express train. This project is site-oriented and has an existing-potential users. Therefore, video ethnography was effectively applied to obtain chronological data of activity potential users. Therefore, video ethnography was effectively applied to obtain chronological data of activity flow, and participant observation was applied to obtain statistical data of synchronous activities. Case study shows a concrete process example of how to apply ethnography into design research.

  • Emotion is one of the elements of the game that will help the user interaction. The way to express the emotions and personality of the character was taken into account severity of reaction to action or a specific graphics in the game so far. However recently structured for the interest in the study of emotion increases and to utilize a variety of feelings in the game is needed. In the field of autonomous agents, studies of the possibility of the use of emotion, defined 12 different emotion rules. In this paper, we dilate by defining the terms used in the game rules of emotion made the rules of the emotion of the game. And, we analyzed emotions in actual game character used Game Emotions Rule. As a result, it was possible to see the rules of the game feeling separate from that being used for game genre similar.

  • Human and robot will have closer relation in the future, and we can expect that the interaction between human and robot will be more intense. To take the advantage of people's innate ability of communication, researchers concentrated on the facial expression so far. But for the robot to express emotional intensity, other modalities such as gesture, movement, sound, color are also needed. This paper suggests that the intensity of emotion can be expressed with color and blinking so that it is possible to apply the result to LED. Color and emotion definitely have relation, however, the previous results are difficult to implement due to the lack of quantitative data. In this paper, we determined color and blinking period to express the 6 basic emotions (anger, sadness, disgust, surprise, happiness, fear). It is implemented on avatar and the intensities of emotions are evaluated through survey. We figured out that the color and blinking helped to express the intensity of emotion for sadness, disgust, anger. For fear, happiness, surprise, the color and blinking didn't play an important role; however, we may improve them by adjusting the color or blinking.

  • 1. Objectives It is necessary to find the psychological methods to treat not only physical but also mental problems. Because the Sasang Constitutional medicine is based on Mind-Body Medicine, so that the Nature and Emotion-Happiness, Anger, Sorrow, Pleasantness- have to be controlled properly. 2. Methods We analysed the characters of each constitutions, drama therapy and meditation and tried to find the suitable application of one for Sasangin. 3. Results and Conclusions Soeumin is feminine, easy to worry, pessimistic and non-active so they need to express their problems, be encouraged and participate to be one of a group having relationship with other people. Soyangin is out-going, easy to start, not enough to be aware of themselves so they need to relax, calm and try to have an insight into themselves. Taeumin is stable, easy to keep something so they need to communicate well with the exterior. Taeyangin is going forward, masculine and necessary to avoid being angry so they need to calm down and relax. Drama therapy is group work with actors, staffs and audiences so it is useful to express their negative feelings through motions, dances and sounds unless they talk. So it is supposed to be useful far Soeumin and Taeumin. And we can apply it to heal the Emotion because it is based on the relationship and the contact with other people. Meditation is helpful to not only concentrate, relax, have insight into themselves but also calm down anxiety, depression an anger. So it could be the best psychotherapy for Soyangin and Taeyangin. And we can apply it to reflect oneself alone to express their Nature adequately.

  • The development of human-friendly game technologies understanding and responding to human emotion is a very crucial element in designing games. Out of emotion derived from games, this study attempted to define characteristics of games as a meaning representing the degree of reaching the targeted emotion. When examining most of researches regarding emotion, it has been noted that they tried to extract the most representative emotion through the systematization of emotional vocabulary and evaluate it by the association with the design elements in question. However, this definition would be beneficial only to understanding the direction of game entity and it could not express the emotion of concrete and objective players. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze the sense correlation of adjectives so as for emotional expressions to be represented accurately corresponding to players' intention, by using adjective thesaurus for the systematic understanding of such game entity.

  • Learning and emotions are very important parts to implement intelligent robots. In this paper, we implement intelligent virtual character based on reinforcement learning which interacts with user and have internal emotion model. Virtual character acts autonomously in 3D virtual environment by internal state. And user can learn virtual character specific behaviors by repeated directions. Mouse gesture is used to perceive such directions based on artificial neural network. Emotion-Mood-Personality model is proposed to express emotions. And we examine the change of emotion and learning behaviors when virtual character interact with user.

  • Although researchers have proposed numerous techniques for speech emotion recognition, its performance remains unsatisfactory in many application scenarios. In this study, we propose a speech emotion recognition model based on a genetic algorithm (GA)-decision tree (DT) fusion of deep and acoustic features. To more comprehensively express speech emotional information, first, frame-level deep and acoustic features are extracted from a speech signal. Next, five kinds of statistic variables of these features are calculated to obtain utterance-level features. The Fisher feature selection criterion is employed to select high-performance features, removing redundant information. In the feature fusion stage, the GA is is used to adaptively search for the best feature fusion weight. Finally, using the fused feature, the proposed speech emotion recognition model based on a DT support vector machine model is realized. Experimental results on the Berlin speech emotion database and the Chinese emotion speech database indicate that the proposed model outperforms an average weight fusion method.
