  • Overbreak or underbreak is one of the most important factors in evaluation the results of a tunnel blasting. Overbreak, which depends on the quality of rock, the type and quantity of explosives, and the method and condition of drilling, has been a target of challenge to many blasting engineers as it is connected with economic directly. Drilling is generally known as a primary one of overbreak producing factors. So, This study presented the practical solution to reduce overbreak, which was caused by drilling, through the analyses of how to make a drilling process accurate and how to evaluate the effect of each drilling method. Thus, this solution would give a quantitative analysis of overbreak and provide the information of how to reduce the quantity of overbreak. Moreover, for verifying this solution, we applied it to a tunnel project and then have found out that the quantity of overbreak decreased to approximately 10-40% compared with the previous way of overbreak control.

  • In order to analyze the effects of ground vibration caused by underground blasting having an effect on structure, the particle velocity and acceleration are calculated by using DYNPAK program. The DYNPAK program analyzes nonlinear transient dynamic problem and adopts the very popular and easily implemented, explicit, central difference scheme. In this program, the material behavior is assumed to be elasto-viscoplastic. Using the particle acceleration history, modal analysis method is applied to the forced vibration response of multiple-degree-of-freedom(MDOF) systems using unclupled equations of motion expressed in terms of the system's natural circular frequencies and modal damping factors. AS a means of evaluating the vibration behavior of building structure subjected to underground blasting, the time response of the displacements relative to the ground of five-story building is determined. It is concluded that the amount of explosives consumed per round, the location of structure, the properties of rock medium, the stiffness fo structure, etc. act on the important factors influencing on the safety of building and that the response of a structure subjected to a forced excitation can usually be obtained with reasonable accuracy by the modal analysis of only a few mode of the lower frequencies of the system.

  • To improve passenger safety, seatbelt systems with pre-tensioner that tightens seatbelt webbing using explosives just before collision are widely adopted. Even though seatbelt must not be unlatched without passenger's operation, release of a buckle due to explosion of pre-tensioner takes place in some situations resulting in serious injury to passengers. To prevent the unintended unlocking, a pendulum like part called anti-g mass is attached to the buckle to block displacement of release button. In this study, the unlocking conditions of anti-g buckle when pre-tensioner explodes has been theoretically investigated. Through multibody model of the seatbelt system incorporating every detailed part of the buckle, dynamic analysis of the seatbelt system with pre-tensioner has been performed including the driver's body model that interacts with seatbelt system. The simulations results has been validated through actual sled test with driver dummy and the seatbelt system.

  • Pyrotechnic shock or pyroshock is characterized as a transient vibration phenomenon which shows large acceleration and high frequency range up to 10kHz during the operation of separation devices where explosives are used. During the flight of a launch vehicle, pyroshock is mainly generated at several events such as satellite separation, fairing separation and stage separation. In this paper, wiremesh isolators are introduced and several types of isolators are manufactured for the performance tests. For the investigation of typical characteristics of wiremesh isolators, compressive loading tests are basically performed and pyroshock tests are accomplished to confirm pyroshock isolation ability of each wiremesh isolator by using 4Kg dummy mass.

  • Among various CE separation methods, micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography(MECC) method using sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS) provides rapid and accurate separation of organic explosive constituents with easy. The running buffer was composed with 2.5 mM borate and 25mM SDS(pH 8.5). Addition of 1M urea and 10% organic modifiers (acetonitrile, methanol and ethanol) improves the resolution of adjacent explosive constituents. When 15 explosive constituents were developed in MECC, most constituents were separated successively while RDX/TNB and DNN/DEP were not, and detection limits of separated compounds are in range of 1 to 4 ppm.

With some electronic devices, reduction characteristic of pyroshock using washer type shock absorber are studied. Random vibration tests are also performed for the verification of vibrational characteristics.

  • Micro- or nano-size particles are required to improve the combustion efficiency and stability in the case of solid explosives and propellants. The micro-structural properties of an energetic material strongly influence the combustion and explosion behavior. However, the traditional size reduction techniques, including milling, are not suitable for production of ultra-fine size particles. As an alternative to the traditional techniques, various re-crystallization processes based on supercritical fluids have recently been proposed. Supercritical fluids are fluids at temperatures and pressures above their critical point. In principle, they do not give problems of solvent contamination as they are completely released from the solute when the decompression occurs. Rapid Expansion Supercritical Solutions(RESS) and Supercritical Anti-Solvent Process(GAS/SAS) are representatives of a nano-size particle formation process of energetic materials using supercritical fluids. In this work, various fine particle formation processes using supercritical fluids are discussed and the results are presented.

  • In this study, numerical analysis was carried out on a complex pressure field of blast waves caused by the detonation of high explosives in various environments. The generated blast waves propagated in the air, upon the sudden release of high energy induced by the explosion. Reflected waves were created when the pressure waves encountered certain obstacles such as the ground or the walls of structures. The propagation of the blast waves and its interaction with the reflected waves were simulated. An adaptive mesh refinement was applied to improve the efficiency of distribution of computer resource, for the computational calculation of the blast wave propagation in a wide open space. In addition, the integration of the calculation domains for the explosive and air were considered when the maximum density of the explosive region was below critical value. The results were verified by comparison with the pressure time history from blast wave experiments performed under two topographical conditions.

  • The traffic congestion of Seoul city has been one of the most serious problems to be settled since the advent of 1970s. As a means to mitigate traffic mess, the authority concerned launched the construction of subway line 3 and 4 in 1980. The two Subway lines slated for completion by 1985 cross each other and run north-south direction, passing through the metropolitan area of Seoul city fraught with high-rise edifices and large-scale shopping centers, and, in order to reduce blasting vibration, NATM was executed for a distance of 10 Km, instead of ASSM previously employed when subway line 1 and 2 were constructed. Tunnel blastings were implemented, preceded by classifying the rocks at construction area into five categories, namely, hard rock, semi-hard rock, weak rock weathered rock and silt and by calculating their respective specific charges through standard test blastings, by employing the pre-splitting and smooth blasting with drilling patterns of burn cut type, so as not to cause damages to surface structures. Most of explosives used were the slurry of low specific gravity and low velocity, and the firings executed by the use of milli-second detonators. Empiric formula were also formulated to check blasting vibrations, based on the vibration allowable values of West Germany standard, for the application to vulnerable construction zones. Should the two lines be placed for public service in 1985, about 40% of the total traffic population of Seoul city amounting to 15 million as of 1984 is estimated to be carried by subway with no difficulties.
