Writing is an activity known to enhance higher level thinking. It allows the writer to utilize, apply, and actively expand the acquired knowledge. One way to increase writing activity in classroom setting is to use peer assessment. In this study, we sought to increase the accuracy of peer assessment by having students discuss about the scoring rubric or by referring to an expert's assessment. One hundred and fifty college students participated in the experiment. In the group that referred to the expert's assessment, the accuracy of peer assessment increased when the same piece of writing was evaluated; however, no such increase was observed when another piece of writing was assessed. On the other hand, in the group that discussed about the scoring rubric, the accuracy of peer assessment remained the same when the same piece of writing was evaluated, but increased when another piece of writing was assessed. Also, in the discussion group, the accuracy increased in proportion to the number of comments during the discussion. The results suggest that active and voluntary participation of students increase the accuracy of peer assessment.
Performance-based remaining life assessment of reinforced concrete bridge girders, subject to chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement, is addressed in this paper. Towards this, a methodology that takes into consideration the human judgmental aspects in expert decision making regarding condition state assessment is proposed. The condition of the bridge girder is specified by the assignment of a condition state from a set of predefined condition states, considering both serviceability- and ultimate- limit states, and, the performance of the bridge girder is described using performability measure. A non-homogeneous Markov chain is used for modelling the stochastic evolution of condition state of the bridge girder with time. The thinking process of the expert in condition state assessment is modelled within a probabilistic framework using Brunswikian theory and probabilistic mental models. The remaining life is determined as the time over which the performance of the girder is above the required performance level. The usefulness of the methodology is illustrated through the remaining life assessment of a reinforced concrete T-beam bridge girder.
This study explored pre-service English teachers' participation in the development of a rubric and examined evaluation of their own English poetry. The current study would investigate: 1) the pre-service English teachers' perception as a rubric developer and self-evaluator, 2) the number of analytic area that the participants included in their rubrics and the scoring scheme that they designed in their rubrics, and 3) the inter-rater differences between self-assessemnt and expert-assessment across analytic areas. Twenty-four EFL learners participated in the current study. The researchers analyzed the learners' own English poetry, their field notes which contained the process of their writing, their rubrics, scores of self-assessment, and expert raters' scores. The results revealed that learners showed positive responses on learner-directed assessment, that 'content' is the most important area, and that inter-rater difference is small across all analytic areas.
Numerous train operating companies provide training by means of driving simulators. A detailed analysis in the course of the rail research project 2TRAIN has shown that the simulation technology, the purposes of training and the overall concept of simulator-based training are rather diverse (Schmitz & Maag, 2008). A joint factor however are weak assessment capabilities and the fact that the simulator training is often not embedded into the overall competence management. This fact hinders an optimal use of the simulators. Therefore, 2TRAIN aims at the development of enhanced training and assessment tools. Taking into account that several simulators are already in use, the focus lays on the extension of existing simulation technology instead of developing entirely new systems. This extension comprises (1) a common data simulation interface (CDSI), (2) a rule-based expert system (ExSys), (3) a virtual instructor (VI), and (4) an _assessment database (AssDB). The foundation of this technical development is an assessment concept (PERMA concept) that is based on performance markers. The first part of the paper presents this assessment concept and a process model for the two major steps of driver performance assessment, i.e. (1) the specification of exercise and assessment and (2) the assessment algorithm and execution of the assessment. The second part describes the rationale and the functionalities of the simulator add-on tools. Finally, recommendations for further technical improvement and appropriate usage are given. based on the results of a pilot study.
Objectives This study is aimed to develop a standard instrument of diagnosis and assessment for the original symptom of Taeeumin. Methods 1. Based on the clinical practice guidelines, the works of Dong-mu, and the expert clinical judgment of the research team, the items to be used in the instrument of diagnosis and assessment for the original symptom of Taeeumin were extracted, and translation was proceeded in plain Korean for easy application and feasible use in daily clinical practice. As a result, candidate items for the diagnosis and assessment tool were derived. 2. An online questionnaire survey was conducted on the candidate items derived through the above process to the expert advisory group for (1) inclusion/exclusion as diagnosis and assessment index (2) evaluation of importance and (3) the validity of translation. Results & Conclusions Through survey of expert advisory group, the number of candidate items were reduced and the preliminary weights were assigned. And based on this, was developed. There were a total of 9 items for Exterior Cold[Wiwanhan] original symptom diagnosis and assessment tool, 21 items for Interior Heat[Ganyeol] original symptom, 15 items for Exterior Disease Unfavorable Patterns[Wiwanhan-paejo] original symptom, and 17 items for Interior Disease Unfavorable Patterns[Ganyeol-paejo] original symptom, and the weights were reflected in each response score so that the final total score could be calculated.
Aims of the EXCEPT project and tasks and characteristics of the EXCEPT system are presented based on an analysis of urban planning EIAs. The methodology of evaluation in EIAs, which had to be developed in order to program the system, is based on a model of evaluation processes. Evaluation principles, evaluation rates, an environmental model and a model of the projects being planned are presented. The evaluation concern re-unifies the different components of evaluation again.

For a realistic and reasonable determination of condition and status, assessment system should include load modeling for the loads acting on slab bridges due to traffic loads, evaluation system for fatigue, and determination of remaining service life. The purpose of the present study is to develop a realistic expert system which can estimate reasonably the fatigue and service life of slab bridges, based on the load models that are derived from the traffic loads.
It has been pointed out that the process of environmental impact assessment in Korea has been less of equity and balance between stakeholders, and less of objective validity in writing impact statement and in holding consultations. Thus this study has intended to find improvement measures regarding the processes of EIS documentation and holding consultations between stakeholders during environmental impact assessment process. To achieve this goal this study carried out expert survey method to analyze validity and suitability of suggested measures in accordance with the problems found through reviewing related literatures. This study has found major improvement measures including transferring the responsibility to write impact statement and to hold consultations from project promoters to the third party (impact assessment committee) composed of related stakeholders without project promoters. The developers need to pay for all expenses to proceed impact assessment.

The assessment of fatigue property is one of the most indispensable factors to design mechanical structures or parts. For accurately assessing fatigue property, it is necessary to precisely identify the loading condition and material property of the objective structure. However, there are many kind of problems in conducting predictive activity for a design concerned with variable factor such as fatigue phenomenons and environments. Therefore, most of the fatigue problems have been assessed from exiting experiment data and prediction method. In this study, expert system is developed for simply conducting performance assessment of weldments based on Finite element Analysis carrying out performance improvement and safety assessment of welded structures.

The goals of this study were to development Natural Ecosystem Value Assessment Model, to suggest the practical applicability of the Natural Ecosystem value assessment for development areas, and to assess natural ecosystem quantitatively using GIS. The Model can evaluate Natural Ecosystem Value between before and after land developments. To select indicators for the model, we conducted the literature reviews. and six indicators and the standard of evaluation had been developed through the expert interviews and literature reviews. the relative importance of the evaluation index throught two times expert questionnaires was found out. the Natural Ecosystem Value Assessment Model has been established, The results demonstrate that although the suggested six indicators are arranged by priority, to maintain quantitative and qualitative the natural ecosystem value, all indicators are desirable to be maintained complementarily. The findings of this study suggest that the natural ecosystem value assessment model appears to be effective an assessment for damaged natural environment value and possible to assign a score value. Also, this model can be applied to research areas and has implications to help maintain the natural ecosystem in land development districts.
