Horizontal openings in reinforced concrete (RC) beams are quite often used to accommodate service pipelines. Several research papers are available in the literature describing their effect. RC beams with vertical openings are commonly used to accommodate service lines in residential buildings in Kuwait. However, there are lack of design guidelines and best practices reported in the literature for RC beams with vertical openings, whereas the detailed guidelines are available for beams with horizontal openings. In the present paper, laboratory experiments are conducted on nine RC beams with and without vertical openings. Parametric study has been carried out using nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) with changes in the diameter of the opening, various positions of the opening along the length and width of the beam, edge distance, etc. 50 finite element simulations were conducted. The FEA results are verified using the results from the laboratory experiments. The study showed that the load carrying capacity of the beam is reduced by 20% for the RC beam with vertical openings placed near the center of the beam compared to a solid beam without an opening. Significant reduction in load carrying capacity is observed for beams with an opening near the support (${\approx}15%$). The overall stiffness of the beam, crack pattern and failure modes were not affected due to the presence of the vertical opening. Furthermore, an artificial neural network (ANN) analysis is carried out using the FEA generated data. The results and observations from the ANN and FEA are in good agreement with experimental results.

In this study, we explored the philosophical perspective of Ian Hacking on experimentation and discussed its potential impact on science education in schools. Traditionally, many philosophers have advocated a theory-driven view of experimentation, emphasizing its importance primarily in validating theories. Similarly, in the context of education, the prevailing perspective has been to focus on experimentation primarily as a means of confirming and proving theories. However, in contrast to this theory-driven perspective, philosophers like Hacking have proposed that experimentation itself possesses autonomy and vitality. Through their discussions, they have brought to light the significance of previously overlooked elements in experiments, such as tool usage, materials, and the involvement of scientists. They have prompted a reevaluation of the role and importance of experiments in scientific activities. Therefore, in this study, we consider the application of this philosophical standpoint to school experimental education. We anticipate that the phenomenon-centered perspective we propose in this research will be beneficial for teaching scientific practices, including tool usage, the involvement of experimenters, and modeling activities.
To support an efficient management of software verification and validation activities, many defect prediction models have been proposed based on object oriented metrics. In order to apply defect prediction models, we need to determine a threshold value. Because we cannot know actually where defects are, it is difficult to determine threshold. Therefore, we performed a series of experiments to explore the issue of determining a threshold. In the experiments, we applied defect prediction models to other systems different from the system used in building the prediction model. Specifically, we have applied three models - Olague model, Zhou model, and Gyimothy model - to four different systems. As a result, we found that the prediction capabilities varied considerably with a chosen threshold value. Therefore, we need to perform a study on the determination of an appropriate threshold value to improve the applicably of defect prediction models.
This paper analyzes previous work on publish/subscribe in mobile ad-hoc networks with respect to collaboration methods among distributed event brokers. Our experiments suggest that approaches building event delivery structures are suitable for a scenario where there are events of various types each of which is consumed by a few subscribers. However, these approaches based on independent periodic exchange of network topology information may fail to reflect the up-to-date information when building event delivery paths. For this reason they do not correctly recover a broken path caused by node mobility, which results in lower event delivery rates. This paper proposes a scheme for building and maintaining event delivery paths based on advertisements initiated by and hence propagated from the root node. This guarantees correct recovery of event delivery paths within each period. Our experiments show that, our proposed scheme gives a better event delivery ratio with lower overhead.

Unsupervised domain adaptation often gives impressive solutions to handle domain shift of data. Most of current approaches assume that unlabeled target data to train is abundant. This assumption is not always true in practices. To tackle this issue, we propose a general solution to solve the domain gap minimization problem without any target data. Our method consists of two regularization steps. The first step is a pixel regularization by arbitrary style transfer. Recently, some methods bring style transfer algorithms to domain adaptation and domain generalization process. They use style transfer algorithms to remove texture bias in source domain data. We also use style transfer algorithms for removing texture bias, but our method depends on neither domain adaptation nor domain generalization paradigm. The second regularization step is a feature regularization by feature alignment. Adding a feature alignment loss term to the model loss, the model learns domain invariant representation more efficiently. We evaluate our regularization methods from several experiments both on small dataset and large dataset. From the experiments, we show that our model can learn domain invariant representation as much as unsupervised domain adaptation methods.
Non-volatile RAM (NVRAM) has both characteristics of nonvolatility and byte addressability. In order to efficiently exploit this NVRAM in the file system layer, we proposed the MiNV (Metadata in NVram) file system in our previous research. MiNV file system maintains all the metadata in NVRAM while storing file data in NAND Flash memory. In this paper, we experimentally analyze the efficiency for the execution of garbage collection in the MiNV file system. Also, we quantify the file system performance gains obtained from efficient garbage collection. Experimental results show that garbage collection on the MiNV file system executes more efficiently that on YAFFS even though these file systems adopt exactly the same garbage collection policy. Specifically, the MiNV file system invokes the aggressive garbage collection mechanism less frequently than YAFFS. Additionally, the MiNV file system postpones the first execution of the aggressive garbage collection mechanism in our experiments. From the experiments, we verify that the efficiency of garbage collection leads to performance improvements of the MiNV file system.
Growth and yield prediction methods, ranging from whole-stand models to individual-tree models, have been developed for forest types managed for wood production. The resultant models are used for a host of purposes including inventory updating, management planning, evaluation of silvicultural alternatives, and harvest scheduling. Because of the large investment in developing growth and yield models for improved genotypes and silvicultural practices for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) in the Southern United States, this region serves to illustrate approaches for modelling intensively managed forests. Analytical methods and computing power generally do not restrict development of reliable growth and yield models. However, long-term empirical observations on stand development, which are time consuming and expensive to obtain, often limit modelling efforts. Given that growth and yield models are used to project present volumes and to evaluate alternative treatment effects, data of both the inventory type and the experimental type are needed. Data for developing stand simulators for loblolly pine plantations have been obtained from a combination of permanent plots in operational forest stands and silvicultural experiments; these data collection efforts are described and summarized. Modelling is essential for integrating and synthesizing diverse information, identifying knowledge gaps, and making informed decisions. The questions being posed today are more complex than in the past, thus further accentuating the need for comprehensive models for stand development.
Apparent changes in the natural hydrologic cycle causing more frequent floods in urban areas and surface water quality impairment have led stormwater management solutions towards the use of green and sustainable practices that aims to replicate pre-urbanization hydrology. Among the widely documented applications are infiltration techniques that temporarily store rainfall runoff while promoting evapotranspiration, groundwater recharge through infiltration, and diffuse pollutant reduction. In this study, a laboratory-scale infiltration device was built to be able to observe and determine the factors affecting flow variations and corresponding solids removal through a series of experiments employing semi-synthetic stormwater runoff. Results reveal that runoff and solids reduction is greatly influenced by the infiltration capability of the underlying soil which is also affected by rainfall intensity and the available depth for water storage. For gravel-filled structures, a depth of at least 1 m and subsoil infiltration rates of not more than 200 mm/h are suggested for optimum volume reduction and pollutant removal. Moreover, it was found that the length of the structure is more critical than the depth for applications in low infiltration soils. These findings provide a contribution to existing guidelines and current understanding in design and applicability of infiltration systems.

Eggshell quality is one of the most important factors that influence hatchability. The porosity and overall quality of eggshell have a very significant effect on exchange of vital gas (carbon dioxide and oxygen) between the developing embryo and the air during incubation. Thin-shelled eggs showed the greater weight loss than do thick-shelled eggs. causing the chick to have difficulty in hatching. Thin-shelled eggs also have a much greater chance of being cracked during handling. On the other hand. thick-shelled eggs showed the higher hatchability as a result of greater fertility and lower intermediate and late embryonic mortalities. Even a small percentage improvement in the eggshell quality could result in significant saving to the breeder industry in an increasingly competitive environment. Many factors including nutrition. management practices, environmental conditions and breeding are known to be related to eggshell quality. In this review brief accounts of each factor associated with eggshell quality and hatchability were provided. We conducted three experiments to investigate the effects of dietary Ca. vitamin D3 metabolite and some bioactive materials on eggshell quality and hatching egg production. The results of our studies showed that relatively high levels of dietary Ca in combination with 25-hydroxycholecalciferol had beneficial effects on improving eggshell quality and reproductive performances in aged egg-type breeder hens. It was also suggested that the proper use of some feed additives such as isoflavon and chitosan might provide means of improving eggshell quality and reproductive performances in aged egg-type breeder hens.
With the rapid growth in construction sector, it becomes all the more important to assess the amount of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste being generated and analyze the practices needed to handle and use this waste before final disposal. This serves waste management and disposal issues, paving way to waste utilization in construction industry from the sustainability point of view. C&D waste constitutes a major bulk of total solid waste produced in the world. In this work, an attempt is made to study the performance of concrete using water soaked Recycled Coarse Aggregates (RCA) in replacement levels of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% to Natural Coarse Aggregates (NCA). Experiments were designed and conducted to study the performance of RCA based concrete. Further suitable performance enhancement techniques to RCA based concrete were attempted, to achieve compressive strength at least equal to or more than that for no RCA based concrete (control concrete). Performance enhancement study is reported here for 50% and 100% RCA based concretes. All four techniques attempted have given favorable results encouraging use of RCA based concretes with full replacement levels, to adopt RCA based concrete in structural applications, without any kind of concern to the stake holder. Further attempts have also been made to use Recycled Fine Aggregates (RFA) with appropriate modifications to serve as fine aggregates in mortar and concrete. Using RFA blended with river sand fractions as well as RFA with Iron Ore Tailings (IOT) fractions, have given good results to serve as fine aggregates to the extent of 100% replacement levels in mortars and concretes.
