  • Studies have been made on performance evaluation of expansion joint systems for an ordinary highway or road bridge. However little study has been made for runway connection bridges at airports. A study on performance evaluated from computer code analysis and shrinkage, extension, and compression repetition tests based on KS F 4425 is conducted to a newly developed expansion joint system which has been installed in a runway connection bridge at Incheon Airport Extension 2 Construction Site. The MIDAS computer code is used to analyze the performance before the manufacture of the mock-up of expansion joint system on the basis of design requirements. Tests based on the KS F 4425 of 2001 year-version are conducted for the mock-up. Domestic codes and standards to validate the performance of the expansion joint system in a connection bridge have been developed for a vehicle. However the expansion joint system tested in this study is installed in a runway connection bridge for an aircraft. Conservatively the heaviest one among airplanes departing and landing at Incheon Airport is assumed level-F $468.4kN/m^2$ and adopted for the tests and analyses in this study. KS F 4425 method is selected for the shrinkage, extension, and compression repetition tests. No remarkable problem was observed for the 2,500-cycle shrinkage and extension and two million-cycle repeatition load tests. The results of this study are expected to contribute to establishment of code and standard for the performance validation of an expansion joint system installed in a runway connection bridge for an aircraft by providing performance test results and computer analysis results based on finite element methods.

  • The strength of adhesive joints employed in composite structures under cryogenic environments, such as LNG tanks, is affected by thermal residual stress generated from the large temperature difference between the bonding process and the operating temperature. Aramid fibers are noted for their low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and have been used to control the CTE of thermosetting resins. However, aramid composites exhibit poor adhesion between the fibers and the resin because the aramid fibers are chemically inert and contain insufficient functional groups. In this work, electrospun meta-aramid nanofiber-reinforced epoxy adhesive was fabricated to improve the interfacial bonding between the adhesive and the fibers under cryogenic temperatures. The CTE of the nanofiber-reinforced adhesives were measured, and the effect on the adhesion strength was investigated at single-lap joints under cryogenic temperatures. The fracture toughness of the adhesive joints was measured using a Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) test.

  • The basic pattern of skirt should be functional in addition to be fit the body. The author paid special attention to the expansion and contraction of the shell which were made the lower trunk and thigh caused by sitting motions. The replicas of the shell were taken by using a gypsum method on 1 female under 4 standardized motions; standing motion, (basic motion), sitting on the chair with flextion 90' at the hip and the knee joints sitting with dropping knees, and sitting with benting legs side wards. Those replicas obtained were developed to the patterns and changes in shape and area of those were measured. Typical displacement and transformation of the shell surface patterns were showed geographycally fig 5-1 to 5-4. mean values of expansion and constriction were obtained by measuring the shell surface on 60 female under the 4 motions. the mean values of it were showed numerically in Table 1-1 to 1-3. The following results were obtained; 1. Vertical constriction of front of the shell were observed near sulcus in guinalis, and vertical extension were near the knees. Horizontal extension were observed near the thighs and the knees. 2. Vertical constrictions of the back of the shell were observed near the knees. It seemed to be influnced the flexion angles of knee points. vertical extension were near gluteus and thighs. Horizontal constriction were small, and horizonlal extension were near gluteus. 3. The high rates of constriction and extension were found near sulcus in guinalis, glutes, and knees. 4. The rates of constriction and extension on the waist line were very low. 5. The highest values of constriction and extension were found in hip and knees.

  • The installation of the expansion joints in a tunnel concrete lining and duct would minimize the cracking at the location of structural shape and stiffness change, differential settlement, big temperature change, and so on. However, it is difficult to determine the required spacing of the expansion joint in a tunnel concrete lining and duct quantitatively because the spacing is influenced by temperature change, structure construction condition, ground-structure interaction, and etc. Nevertheless, a highway specification (Korea Expressway Corporation, 2012) or a road design manual (Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, 2010) specifies that the expansion joint spacing in a tunnel concrete lining should be installed uniformly smaller than 25 m from the tunnel portals to 50 m inside of a tunnel and elsewhre 20-60 m in a tunnel (because there is no specifcation for a duct it is assumed that a duct follows the specfication of lining). This specification results in several construction and economic problems in relation with a tunnel construction. Accordingly, in order to minimize the problems, this study analyzed both domestic and foreign design standards and specifications. In addition, field test, theoretical and numerical analyses were carried out in relation to the expansion joint in a tunnel lining and duct. The purpose of this study is to reestabilish a criterion for installing the expansion joint in a tunnel concrete lining and duct.

  • This paper discusses the analysis method of prestressed concrete girder integral abutment bridges for a 75-year bridge life and the development of prediction models for abutment displacements under thermal loading due to annual temperature fluctuation and time-dependent loading. The developed nonlinear numerical modeling methodologies considered soil-structure interaction between supporting piles and surrounding soils and between abutment and backfills. Material nonlinearity was also considered to simulate differential rotation in construction joints between abutment and backwall. Based on the numerical modeling methodologies, a parametric study of 243 analysis cases, considering five parameters: (1) thermal expansion coefficient, (2) bridge length, (3) backfill height, (4) backfill stiffness, and (5) pile soil stiffness, was performed to established prediction models for abutment displacements over a bridge life. The parametric study results revealed that thermal expansion coefficient, bridge length, and pile-soil stiffness significantly influenced the abutment displacement. Bridge length parameter significantly influenced the abutment top displacement at the centroid of the superstructure, which is similar to the free expansion analysis results. Developed prediction model can be used for a preliminary design of integral abutment bridges.

  • Residual stress induced in U-bending and tube-to-tubesheet joint processes of PWR's row-1 heat exchanger tube was measured by X-ray method and Hole-Drilling Method(HDM). Compressive residual stresses(-) at the extrados surface were induced in U-bending, and its maximum value reached -319 MPa in axial direction at the position of $\psi$ = $0^{\circ}$. Tensile residual stresses(+) of $\sigma_{zz}$ = 45 MPa and $\sigma_{\theta\theta}$ = 25 MPa were introduced in the intrados surface at the position of $\psi$ = $0^{\circ}$. Maximum tensile residual stress of 170 MPa was measured at the flank side at the position of $\psi$ = $90^{\circ}$, i.e., at apex region. It was observed that higher stress gradient was generated at the irregular transition regions (ITR). The trend of residual stress induced by U bending process of the tubes was found to be related with the change of ovality. The residual stress induced by the explosive joint method was found to be lower than that by the mechanical roll method. The gradient of residual stress along the expanded tube was highest at the transition region (TR), and the residual stress in circumferential direction was found to be higher than the residual stress in axial direction.

  • Expansion joint is the essential element of the bridge in many cases. When the bridge faces chloride of preventing freezing on the surface of the bridge, the expansion joints is damaged significantly, thus this reduces service life and increases maintenance cost of the bridge. As a solution of this problem, new technology using high ductile materials for the joint without expansion joint was developed and in this research, crack control performance, preventing leaking after the cracking, and chloride resistance were experimentally evaluated. As a result of the experiment, with PCM and FRC materials, the connecting joint suffered poor crack dispersion and severe damage by the chloride penetration while with high-ductile material, the connecting joint dispersed the tensile deformation to microcracks stably up to 7.5mm. Furthermore, under the sever conditions, the leaking was prevented and penetration of chloride ions was prevented after the crack occurred.

  • Lately outmoded and functionally obsolete buildings constructed in 1960s and 1970s are often remodelled and restored. Even though there are not serious structural defects in the existing buildings, many old buildings have been reconstructed to improve residence quality or to extend residence area of the buildings. The experimental or theoretical research on plane expansion of RC apartments is quite scare. In this research, 12 specimens and 19 RC slabs connected by hinged joints were tested. The new slab was connected to the existing slab by hinge joints injecting dowel bars between two slabs. Main parameters of the slabs are types of the dowel bars (D13 and D19), spacing of the dowel bars (150mm, 300mm, and 450mm), and the locations of the steel bars in the existing slabs. The test results indicated that the shear strength of the RC test slabs having various types of dowel bars was about twice that calculated by the ACI 318-02 code. All slabs failed in concrete spatting and the dowel steel bars did not reach their yield strengths.

  • Rapid industrialization and urbanization caused by the high economic growth of the country requires optimization of land usage as well as the expansion of underground space. Therefore the construction of large and deep basements is inevitable in built up areas where the braced excavation for earth retaining structures may create many problems such as settlement and damages of nearby buildings and underground utilities. In this work, some of major influential factors concerning the stability of braced excavation are investigated and the results are compared with the field observation results. The ground water table, applied strut forces, horezontal wall displacement, infilling materials in the rock joints were found to be the most critical factors influencing the stability of braced walls constructed in the layered ground. Magnituide and type of the wall deformation was closely related to the pattern of the surface settlement. The stability of braced walls are described in terms of strut forces.

  • The ceramic has such high qualities as light weight, abrasion resistance, heat resistance compared with metal, but since it is breakable, it can't be used as structural material and it is desirable to joining metal which is full of toughness, but, according as the ceramic/metal joint is executed at high temperature, the joint residual stress develops near the joint sides in the process of cooling the high temperature down to the suitable temperature due to difference of the thermal expansion coefficient between ceramic and metal, and the joint residualstress lowers the fracture strength. In this study, to ensure security and improvement of bending strength, 1 studies on see distribution shape of residual stress according to high thermal cycle, and the influnence of theraml cycle and distribution shape of residual stess on joint-strength.
