  • Solid modeling refers to techniques for unambiguous representations of three-dimensional objects. Feature recognition is a sub-discipline focusing on the design and implementation of algorithms for detecting manufacturing information such as holes, slots, etc. in a solid model. Automated feature recognition has been an active research area in stolid modeling for many years, and is considered to be a critical component for CAD/CAM integration. This paper gives a technical overview of the state of the art in feature recognition research. Rather than giving an exhaustive survey, I focus on the three currently dominant feature recognition technologies: graph-based algorithms, volumetric decomposition techniques, and hint-based geometric reasoning. For each approach, I present a detailed description of the algorithms being employed along with some assessments of the technology. I conclude by outlining important open research and development issues.

  • We probe the feasibility of high-frequency radio observations of very rapid flux variations in compact active galactic nuclei (AGN). Our study assumes observations at 230 GHz with a small 6-meter class observatory, using the SNU Radio Astronomical Observatory (SRAO) as example. We find that 33 radio-bright sources are observable with signal-to-noise ratios larger than ten. We derive statistical detection limits via exhaustive Monte Carlo simulations assuming (a) periodic, and (b) episodic flaring flux variations on time-scales as small as tens of minutes. We conclude that a wide range of flux variations is observable. This makes high-frequency radio observations - even with small observatories - a powerful probe of AGN intra-day variability; especially, those observations complement observations at lower radio frequencies with larger observatories like the Korean VLBI Network (KVN).

  • In this paper, not only the development of optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicability but also the development of in-process real-time weld quality (such as strength and toughness) evaluation technique by acoustic emission for friction welding of the engine exhaustive valve (SUH3-SUH35 dissimilar steels of 12.3mm, 16mm, 20mm, and 24mm in diameters) were performed, comparing with the other FRW matches of materials such as SUH3 to SUH31, STS303 and SUH3 to STS304. As an important result, the techniques for dissimilar friction welding optimization of engine heat resisting steels SUH3 and SUH35 (12.3mm, 16mm, 20mm, and 24mm) and its real-time weld quality evaluation by AE was developed, considering on both diameter and carbon equivalent effects.

  • This paper newly proposes a modular type dynamic encoding algorithm for searches (DEAS) which partitions the whole parameters into several modules and carries out exhaustive DEAS for each module. uDEAS is used to measure parameter sensitivities to the cost function, and the variables whose sensitivities are similar are grouped to make a module. The proposed optimization method is applied to optimal trajectory generation for biped walking of a humanoid. and the optimization result is compared with those of the former versions of DEAS.

  • In this paper, design procedure and estimation of the double sampling plans are developed when the production process is examined in order and if it shows the dependence between the products. If a dependent process model can be simulated, the best sampling plans can be selected by using the special properties of the probability structure. The number of actual evaluations to find the plans can be reduced remarkably. The experimental study reveals that only small portion of the total exhaustive enumeration is needed. ARMA (1,1) time series models are given as numerical examples.

  • This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the spurious turn-on phenomena in phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converters. The conventional analysis of the spurious turn-on phenomenon does not establish in the PSFB converter as realizing zero voltage switching (ZVS). Firstly, a circuit model is proposed taking into account the parasitic capacitors and inductors of the transistors, as well as the parasitic elements of the power circuit loop. Second, an exhaustive investigation into the impact of all these parasitic elements on the spurious turn-on is conducted. It has been found that the spurious turn-on phenomenon is mainly attributed to the parasitic inductors of the power circuit loop, while the parasitic inductors of the transistors have a weak impact on this phenomenon. In addition, the operation principle of the PSFB converter makes the leading and lagging legs have distinguished differences with respect to the spurious turn-on problems. Design guidelines are given based on the theoretical analysis. Finally, detailed simulation and experimental results obtained with a 1.5 kW PSFB converter are given to validate proposed analysis.

  • In this paper, the performance of bridges used to interconnect LAN to FD야 backbone networks as well as the performance of MAC protocols for FD야 backbone networks were thoroughly analyzed, The exhaustive service discipline and three ource models were applied to analyze the mean waiting time of the system. the performance is evaluated in terms of the service rate of bridge, total load of backbone. medium length of back bone, value of T and station latency. The result of analysis show that in general , processing delay of the system is mainly determined by bridge delays. But when processing time of bridge mereases, processing delays of the system are primarily determined by MAC protocols. Therefore, speed-up of processing time of bridge is necessary to efficiently use the high speed backbone networks.

  • Probabilistic structural design optimization, which is characterized by the so-called probabilistic. constraints which introduce permissible probability of violation, is preferred to deterministic design optimization since unpredictable inherent uncertainties and randomness in structural and environmental properties are to be taken quantitatively into account by probabilistic design optimization. In this paper, the well-known reliability index based MPFP(Most Probable Failure Point) search approach and the newly introduced target performance measure based MPTP(Minimum Performance Target Point) search approach are summarized and compared. The present comparison focuses on the number of iterations required for the estimation of probabilistic constraints and a technique for improvement which removes exhaustive iterations is presented as well. A 10 bar truss problem is examined for this.

  • The strong need of verifying theories formulated for semi-active control through applications to real structures is due to the fact that theoretical research on semi-active control systems is not matched by a corresponding satisfactory experimental activity. This paper shows how a smart system including magnetorheological devices as damping elements can be implemented in a large-scale structural model, by describing in detail the kind of electronics (dedicated hardware and software) adopted during the experimental campaign. It also describes the most interesting results in terms of reduction of the seismic response (either experimental or numerical) of the semi-actively controlled structure compared to a passive operating control system, and in terms of the evaluation criteria proposed in the benchmark for seismically excited controlled buildings. The paper also explains how to derive from the classical theory of optimal control the adopted control logic, based on a clear physical approach, and provides an exhaustive picture of the time delays characterizing the control sequence.
