  • This study presents the design modification for SCR muffler of a commercial vehicle. Its main objective is the reduction of radiated noise at SCR muffler. For this study, the research of five steps were achieved by experimental and CAE analysis. First step is the measurement of radiated noise using impact-acoustic test. Second step is the source identification using experimental modal analysis. The cause of radiated noise source is confirmed by the resonance of end plates at SCR muffler. Third step confirms the possibility of resonance avoidance using SDM analysis applied the mass control. Fourth step is the suggestion of design modification which is the change of mode shape by CAE analysis. Last step is the verification of design modification using SYSNOISE analysis. Finally, the prototype product applied the countermeasure of resonance evasion was manufactured and the reduction of radiated noise at SCR muffler was confirmed by pass-by noise test.

  • The objective of this study is do obtain the relationship between the acoustic mode and cavity tone induced in a perforated tube exhaust muffler. First, the modal frequency for the axisymmetric radial mode and the mode shape have been computed using the impedance model for the perforated tube. Then, experiment has been perfonned for the onset frequencies of the cavity tone for various design parameters and through-flow. The theoretically obtained modal frequencies are well consistent with the measured onset frequencies of the cavity tone, showing that the cavity tone is induced by the axisymmetric radial mode. And it is found that the modal frequency of a perforated tube muffler is much lower than that of a simple expansion chamber.

  • This study performs structural and vibrational analyses on three models of motorcycle mufflers, A, B, and C, due to the pressure of exhaust gases. Model A is the common model seen on motorcycles, model B is a model with a longer outlet, and model C is a model with some curved outlets. This research shows that all models have sufficient strength at the given loading condition, and model A has the highest durability against vibration among three models. The appropriate configuration can be determined to be the most efficient by applying this result to the design of motorcycle muffler.

  • Mufflers have been widely used in the exhaust system to reduce the noise. However, installing muffler may deteriorate the efficiency due to the increase of back pressure. Mufflers usually consist of partition plates and perforated holes in a expansion chamber. In this paper, the influences of the location of the partition and hole on the acoustic TL and back pressure were examined. The acoustic TL was predicted using virtual lab commercial software, while the back pressure were predicted using CFX commercial software. The results were used to set up a database for finding their trends. The optimal muffler model in user-interested frequency range could be selected by analyzing this database.

  • In the analysis of automobile exhaust system, the exciting forces from the engine determine the dynamic behavior of the system and the dynamic characteristics influence the riding quality. Therefore, the identification of the force in numeric value is quite important for the vibrational reduction. However, the value is difficult to obtain by experiments due to harsh conditions around the engine. In this research, an optimization technology is adopted to evaluate the exciting forces. An experimental method is conducted for the verification of the finite element modeling. Displacements on the end of the exhaust system are measured under the idling environment. cost function is set up to minimize the differences between the displacements of the numerical simulation and the experiment. Design variables are the components of the exciting forces. That is, optimization is utilized to estimate the forces with existing data. Excellent estimations have been calculated efficiently and the information is used again for the forced vibration of the exhaust system.

  • Suppression of very low-frequency noise from an automobile exhaust system is difficult due mainly to its large wave length. Therefore, the configuration of total exhaust system, i,e., piping and muffler layout, is important at low frequencies. In this paper, an optimal layout technique of exhaust systems has been developed for reducing low-frequency exhaust noise. For this purpose, system insertion loss and virtual attenuation coefficient have been defined by considering the effects of mean flow and temperature gradient in the pipe. The applicability of present method is investigated with an actual automobile exhaust system and an optimized layout of pipes and mufflers is suggested.

  • In recent years, the driving performance and exhaust sound quality in automobiles have been recognized as important factors, as they maximize the driving fun to fulfil the demands of customers. Therefore, many automobile manufacturers are studying various exhaust pipe shapes to improve sound quality and optimize exhaust pressure. The objective of the exhaust pipe design is to maximize the engine efficiency using optimal exhaust pressure settings. In this study, an exhaust system was fabricated with different junction shapes, and the results were analyzed through various experiments. The exhaust gas pressure acting inside the exhaust pipe was measured using a pressure transducer. Meanwhile, the vibration generated in the vehicle was measured in three axial directions and analyzed. The ground noise generated in the indoor and outdoor of the vehicle was measured, and the noise generated at the maximum output was measured and analyzed.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the flow through the intake and exhaust system of a spark ignition engine. The flow was assumed to be one-dimensional, compressible and unsteady, and carburetor, muffler, valve and junction are modelled as boundary conditions according to their flow characteristics. In the experiment, four cylinder gasoline engine is used and the pressures in the intake and exhaust pipes and in the cylinder are measured and compared with the results of numerical analysis. In consequence of the comparison, four periods of pressure wave in a cycle are observed in both case of experiment and prediction. In case of exhaust pipe, the results obtained from the experiment are in accord with that from calculation. The results of the intake system show some differences with each other due to the complication in shape, but the periods of both case concur well.

  • From the flow analysis of the silencer for 8 kW diesel generators, the following results were obtained. For silencer-1, it was confirmed that the holes formed at the inlet-side portion connect into the exhaust pipe in the chamber. The exhaust pipe installed inside silencer-1 was integrally connected through the holes in the chamber. As a result, it was confirmed that the pressure inside the chamber was kept stable. It was confirmed that the pressure loss generated inside an absorptive type silencer such as silencer-2 was small. The differential pressure of the inlet-outlet of silencer-1 and silencer-2 was confirmed to be 494 Pa at 15 m/s, 859 Pa at 20 m/s, 1326 Pa at 25 m/s, and 1911 Pa at 30 m/s.

  • It is very important to choose optimal material having good corrosion resistance and capabilities for the part materials such as the automotive exhaust system under a hot salt corrosion atmosphere. Generally, two types of corrosion come into the automotive exhaust system. One is 'Condensate Corrosion', which is occurred by exhaust gas condensate formed at the inner surface of exhaust system heated up during driving, which results in the acid condensate pitting. The other is 'High Temperature Salt Corrosion' occurring from the interaction between the chloride ion coming from salt at the seaside district or snow salt and the outer surface of exhaust system. By the corrosion attack, the main muffler is firstly damaged and the life cycle of an automobile is significantly decreased. It has been investigated that the hot salt corrosion properties of a STS 409L and 436L ferritic stainless steels which are well-known for the materials of the automotive exhaust system. In addition, the corrosion properties of hot dip aluminum coated STS 409L have been compared with uncoated steels. Aluminum coated STS 409L showed a superior corrosion resistance than uncoated STS 409L, and futhermore showed a better corrosion resistance than a STS 436L, which is an expensive ferritic stainless steel having a excellent corrosion resistance caused from more chromium content of an alloying element.
