Effects of Rehabilitation Exercise Combined with Electrical Muscle Stimulation on Pain, Muscle Strength, and Function in Soldiers Undergoing Knee Meniscectomy

  • Objective: Meniscal injuries are a common and high-risk condition among military personnel, leading to difficulties in performing missions.The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of combining electrical muscle stimulation therapy with exercise therapy during rehabilitation on pain, muscle strength, and function in patients after meniscectomy. Design: A two-group pretest-posttest design Methods: A total of 30 subjects were included in this study. They were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n=15), which received knee extensor strengthening exercise along with electrical muscle stimulation, or the control group (n=15), which received only knee extensor strengthening exercise. Pre-test was conducted prior to the intervention, which consisted of 30 minutes of treatment five times a week for a total of 20 sessions. Post-test was performed after a 4-week period. Pain, strength, and function were assessed before and after the intervention. Results: The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference in pain reduction and muscle strength improvement in the experimental group, and a significant difference was also found between the experimental group and the control group in terms of functional evaluation. Conclusions: The combination of exercise therapy and electrical muscle stimulation therapy resulted in greater improvements in pain, strength, and function assessment, contributing to improved overall function.

Effects of Cervical Stabilization Exercise in patients with Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the effect of cervical stabilization exercise on pain and structure in patients with cervical artificial disc replacement. Methods: Forty-four individuals with cervical artificial disc replacement volunteered to participate from FEB 2012 to MAR 2013 in this study. They were allocated to either Experimental Group (EG) or Control Group (CG), with 22 subjects in each group. Subjects from the EG performed cervical stabilization exercise program and subjects from the CG performed isometric exercise program. Assessment tools were made with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Neck Disability Index (NDI), and Cervical Lordosis Angle (CLA). Results: In this study, in within-group and between-group comparison, the EG and CG showed significant differences in all parameters(p<0.05). But EG showed more improvement than CG at all parameters. Conclusion: These findings suggest that cervical stabilization exercise may be favorably used to improve VAS, NDI and CLA in patients with cervical artificial disc replacement. Further studies with larger sample and long-term follow-up period need to generalize the results of this study.

The Effects of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation Exercise on the BMD, Balance and Lower Muscular Strength in Patients with Osteoporosis (고유수용성신경근촉진법 운동이 골다공증 환자의 골밀도, 균형 및 하지 근력에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of an exercise program involving the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) lower-extremity patterns on the Bone Mineral Density (BMD), balance and lower muscular strength in patients with osteoporosis. Methods: The participants were allocated randomly to 2 groups: experimental group and control group. To evaluate the effects of exercise, the subjects were evaluated using the BMD and Time Up & Go Test and One Leg Stance Test for balance, and the Sit To Stand for lower muscular strength. Results: After the 8 week study, the experimental group showed a significant difference in all items compared to the control groups. Conclusion: These results suggest that a PNF exercise program is effective in patients with osteoporosis. Furthermore, an exercise program involving these patterns can be used in a follow-up program for patients with osteoporosis. Overall, more study will be needed to develop and apply more efficient exercise programs for such patients.

The Effects of Schroth Exercise on Postural Alignment of Sagittal Plane in the Visually Impaired Students (슈로스 운동이 시각장애학생의 시상면 자세 정렬에 미치는 효과)

  • Background: This study was conducted to prove the effects of the Schroth exercise on sagittal postural alignment to the visually impaired students. Methods: The subjects were 8 students who attend the special school in Daegu and performed the Schroth exercise 3 times per week for 3 weeks. Craniovertebral angle and pelvic alignment were measured to compare the effects of the exercise. Results: Craniovertebral angle and pelvic alignment on sagittal plane showed significant differences (p<.05). Conclusions: Schroth exercise was effective to improve postural alignment of sagittal plane to the visually impaired students and these results will have a positive impact on future study of improvement of postural alignment on sagittal plane to the visually impaired students.

The Effect of Ability to Balance Sensory Integration Exercise for Adults (고유수용성감각운동이 성인의 균형능력에 미치는 효과)

  • Background: To determine the effect of proprioceptive exercise(PE) on muscle activation and balance of healthy subjects. Methods: 20 subjects were randomly assigned to proprioceptive exercise(PE, n=10) and general exercise group(GE, n=10). To measure muscle activation of the lower limb and balance. For evaluation of muscle activation(Tibialis anterior, Gastrocnemius lateral and medial head), the Electromyogram was used, and balance was measured using the one-leg standing test, OLST. Results: Tibialis anterior(TA), Gastrocnemius medial head(GM) and Gastrocnemius lateral head(GL) muscle activations were significantly (p<0.05) improved in PE group and GE group. and significantly difference between groups(p<0.05). Regarding balance, eye open and close OLST were significantly (p<0.05) increased in PE group and GE group. and significantly difference between groups(p<0.05). Conclusion: Proprioceptive exercise can improve muscle activation of the lowe limb and balance in subjects.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was compare the effect of core muscle strengthening between core exercise on stable surface and core exercise on unstable surface. Methods: Thirty-nine adults participated in this study and were randomly allocated to three groups. The stable surface exercise group and unstable surface exercise groups practiced core muscle training for $3{\times}30minute$ sessions over a 4-week period. The control group did not received therapeutic intervention except pre and post test. The following clinical tools were used to assess core muscle strength and balance: Side Plank Test, Trunk Flexion Test, Balance Error Scoring Test, Core Muscle Stength & Stability Test. Results: The stable surface exercise group showed significant improvement in trunk muscle strength of anterolateral part as revealed by the Side Plank Test and Trunk flexion Test(p<.05). The unstable surface exercise group showed significant improvement in trunk muscle strength of anterolateral part and balance ability as revealed by the Balance Error Scoring Test and Core Muscle Strength & Stability Test(p<.05). Conclusion: The results of this study, both core exercise on stable surface and core exercise on unstable surface induced core muscle strengthening and balance ability. Expecially core exercise on unstable surface more effective to core muscle strengthening and balance ability.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to examine the Effect of Lunge Exercise on the Balance of Stable and Unstable Supporting surface. Method : The experimenter was a healthy twenties male and female. The period was two weeks, divided into a stable group and a unstable group. Setting the holding time 4 sec 3 sets of 10 times using the Stable and Unstable Supporting Surfaces. The break time was set at one minute for each set. Balance cushions were used for unstable supporting surfaces. Results : After Lunge Exercise, Both groups had an impact on improving their ability to balance. Conclusion : There has not been much change in the ability to balance the stable and Unstable Supporting Surfaces. However, considering surface conditions, the pre and post exercise comparisons had an effect on improving the ability to balance.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Inline-skating exercise on the static balance. Total 10 subjects with common were recruited from university for student in Kwangyang, and the Inline-skating exercise was conducted 3times at a week during 2 weeks. Balance test was measured by using Good Balance with overall index, NSEO(normal standing when eye open), NSEC(normal standing when eye close), OLREO(one leg right standing when eye open), OLREC(one leg right standing when eye close), OLLEO(one leg left standing when eye open), OLLEC(one leg left standing There was statistically significant difference of the balance ability of the left-right only between the before and the after exercise in the case of NSEO position. however, the statistically difference was not found in terms of the Mean X speed, Mean Y speed, Velocity moment between the before and the after exercise in the case of NSEC position. There was statistically significant difference of the balance ability of the Mean X speed, Mean Y speed between the before and the after exercise in the case of OLLEO and OLLEC position, however, the statistically difference was not found in terms of the Velocity moment between the before and the after exercise in this case. There was statistically significant difference of the balance ability of all the terms between the before and the after exercise in the case of OLREO. however, the statistically difference was not found in terms of the Mean Y speed only between the before and the after exercise in the case of OLREC. In this case, the statistically difference was found in terms of Velocity moment between the before and the after exercise. This study showed that Inline-skating exercise was effected on the improvement of the balance ability in normal peoples.

Effects of Electrical Stimulation Therapy on Chronic Knee Pain, Exercise Self-Efficacy, and Quality of Life in Korean Elderly Women (전기 자극이 여성 노인의 만성 무릎통증, 운동자기효능 및 삶의 질에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of electric stimulation therapy on chronic knee pain, exercise self-efficacy, and quality of life in Korean elderly women. Methods: The design was an unequivalent control pretest-posttest study. Samples were total of 60 (experimental: 30, control: 30) elderly women with healthy cognitive and communication abilities aged 65 years old and above. The experimental treatment involved was the electric stimulation of both thigh quadriceps muscles for 15 minutes per treatment, 3times per a week, for a total of 12 weeks. Measurements taken were S-F MPQ and AIMS for chronic knee pain, exercise self-efficacy measurement for exercise self-efficacy, and S-F 36 scale for quality of life. Data were analyzed using SPSS PC+ 12. Results: Chronic knee pain according to the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (t=43.563, p=.000) and Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale (t=31.364, p=.000) were significantly decreased in the experimental group by the application of electrical stimulation therapy. Exercise self-efficacy (t=107.116, p=.000) and quality of life (t=76.429, p=.000) were significantly increased in the experimental group by the application of electrical stimulation therapy. Conclusion: Electrical stimulation therapy could be a more effective primary nursing intervention in decreasing chronic knee pain, and on increasing exercise self-efficacy and quality of life for Korean elderly women.

The Effects of Cervical Extension-Traction Exercise on Cervical Alignment, Pain, and Neck Disability in Patients with Mild Turtle Syndrome (경추 신전-견인 운동이 경증 거북목증후군 환자의 경추정렬, 통증, 기능장애에 미치는 영향)

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of cervical extension-traction exercise on cervical alignment, pain, and neck disability in patients with mild turtle syndrome. Methods: Thirty two outpatients with mild turtle neck syndrome were recruited and randomly divided into two groups. Participants in the experimental group was applied cervical extension-traction exercise (CETE, n=16) and in the control group applied cervical stabilization exercise (CSE, n=16) for three times a week for 4 weeks. Results: Cobb angle and Jochumsen depth were CETE showed significant difference within the group post test (p<.05). And the CETE was significantly higher than the CSE. In the pressure pain threshold, both CETE and CSE showed significant differences within post test (p<.05). And the CETE was significantly higher than the CSE. Neck disability index were significant (p<.05) in the CETE post test. There was no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Our results of this study showed that applying cervical extension-traction exercise to patients with mild turtle syndrome improved cervical alignment, pain and neck dysfunction.
