The physico-chemical characteristics of core sediment, community dynamics of Salix species during the sedimentation were investigated in 1990~1997 for the purpose of inquiry to reveal the effects of terrestrialization on the environment and plant community in a natural wetland. The study site, Paksil-nup wetland was a valley blocked lake located near Hwang-River, Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. The values of conductivity, organic matter, total nitrogen, exchangeable K, and exchangeable Ca were higher, and pH was lower in the upper layer of the core sediment. Soil properties such as available phosphorus, exchangeable Ca, exchangeable Na increased, and organic matter, total nitrogen, exchangeable K decreased during the sedimentation. Salix nipponica was the dominant species, and Salix glandulosa was subdominant among 10 Salix species. Sahx species were supposed to be the pioneer plants in shrub and tree layers during the succession in Paksil-nup wetland. Age class of SaliX species community from the epilittoral zone to the infralittoral zone were low, and age of Saljx species distributed from 2 years to 11 years. DBH, height, mean number of branches, number of herb species, and light intensity were increased, whereas density was decreased from a lower age to a higher age community. Salix nipponica was superior than Sahx purpurea var. japonica and other Salix species during the interspecific competition among Salix species.
To investigate the effect of simulated acid rain on the change in soil chemical properties, simulated acid rain of different pH was applied to the three soils of different texture. Simulated acid rain of pH 4.0 and 6.0 did not greatly change the soil pH, while simulated acid rain of pH 2.0 decreased greatly the soil pH. Decrease in soil pH were in the order of sandy loam > loam > clay loam, while increase in exchangeable acidity was in the order of clay loam > loam > sandy loam. Amount of nutrients leached downward due to the penetration of simulated acid rain into the soil was in the order of Ca > K > Mg. Exchangeable Al was not detected when soil acidity dropped to pH 5 and exchangeable acidity increased within a range of CEC. A total 1200mm of simulated acid rain(pH 3.0) can load $12kg\;ha^{-1}$ of $H^+$ ion, $128kg\;ha^{-1}$ of sulfur, $56kg\;ha^{-1}$ of nitrogen. The acidity of simulated acid rain pH 3.0 can be neutralized by addition of $444kg\;ha^{-1}$ of slaked lime. The amount of leached bases were equivalent to 923, 1731 and $1608kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ in sandy loam, loam and clay loam soil respectively.
Background and objective: Calcium chloride (CaCl2) and sodium chloride (NaCl) are commonly used as a deicing agent in South Korea and penetrate the soil on the roadside, causing damage to plants. This study was conducted to investigate the salinity reduction effect of Pennisetum alopecuroides and the chemical characteristics of soil leachate. Methods: The plants were treated with five different concentrations of CaCl2 (0, 1, 2, 5, and 10g·L-1) and were grouped into the Cont., C1, C2, C5, and C10 groups. CaCl2 of 200 m·L-1 was sprayed to each plant once every two weeks. The growth of P. alopecuroides (plant height, leaf length, leaf width and the number of leaves) was measured. The level of EC and pH, and exchangeable cations (K+, Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+) in the leachate of soil was monitored. Results: The pH of soil leachate decreased as the CaCl2 concentration increased, and the EC increased significantly. The content of K+ did not change significantly until the concentration of CaCl2 reached 5 g·L-1, but the content of Ca2+, Na+, and Mg2+ significantly increased. The plant height, leaf length, and leaf width of P. alopecuroides showed the highest value in CaCl2 1 g·L-1 followed by CaCl2 2 g·L-1 and the control group. Root fresh weight was the highest in CaCl2 2 g·L-1. On the other hand, there was no change in the shoot fresh weight, dry weight and root dry weight, and P. alopecuroides growth inhibition at the concentration of 5 g·L-1 or higher in the plant height and leaf length. Conclusion: P. alopecuroides is relatively highly salt-tolerant and can improve the salt damaged soil by lowering the content of the salt-based exchangeable K+ ions.

This study was carried out to analyze vegetation, soil characteristic, and ordination of the Young-bong region in Woraksan National Park. Communities by species in Woraksan forest were composed of Quercus mongolica community group. This community group was classified into Pinus densiflora community, Quercus variabilis community, Carpinus cordata community and Quercus mongolica community. In the study, it was found that the composition of organic matter was 9.6~19.6%, nitrogen (0.3~0.7%), available phosphorous (4.5~8.8mg/kg), exchangeable K ($0.3{\sim}0.5cmol^+/kg$), exchangeable Ca ($1.6{\sim}6.75cmol^+/kg$), exchangeable Mg ($0.8{\sim}1.55cmol^+/kg$), cation exchange capacity (C.E.C.; $7.6{\sim}32.95cmol^+/kg$), and pH was 4.5~5.1 respectively. The Carpinus cordata community were mostly found in high elevation and high percentage of total nitrogen, C.E.C., and organic matter. Controversially, Pinus densiflora community and Quercus variabilis community were found mostly in low elevation and low percentage of total nitrogen, C.E.C., and organic matter. The Quercus mongolica community were found in medium elevation and medium percentage of total nitrogen, C.E.C., and organic matter.
This research was carried out to investigate the correlation between soil chemical properties and bioactive compounds of Acer tegmentosum Maxim. The methods of determining bioactive compounds were determined by high performance liquid chromatography, that contained (-)-gallocatechin (0.04±0.01 ~ 0.43±0.28%), salidroside (0.90±0.06 ~ 3.86±0.59%), tyrosol (0.03±0.00 ~ 0.43±0.00%), (-)-catechin (0.05±0.01 ~ 0.37±0.14%), 6'-O-galloylsalidroside (0.02± 0.01 ~ 0.31±0.06%), (-)-epicatechin-gallate (0.01±0.00 ~ 0.04±0.01%). The soil chemical properties analysis such as soil pH, electric conductivity (EC), organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphate (Avail. P2O5), exchangeable cation and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were performed following the standard manual. The correlation analysis between soil chemical properties and bioactive compounds of A. tegmentosum, soil pH, available phosphate and exchangeable cation (Ca2+ and Mg2+) were negatively correlated with content of salidroside. On the other hand, soil exchangeable cation (Na+) showed positive correlation with content of salidroside. The results of this study was able to investigate the correlation between soil chemical properties and bioactive compounds of A. tegmentosum.
Effects of magnesium sulfate ($MgSO_4$) and magnesium hydroxide $[Mg(OH)_2]$, which have different chemical characteristics, on soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and exchangeable cation distributions were investigated. Using plastic columns packed with a loam soil, the two Mg-fertilizers were treated at the rate of $300kg\;MgO\;ha^{-1}$ and water was applied on the soil surface four times at every 7 days. Soil samples were taken at 5, 10, 15, and 20 cm depth after 7 days of each water application. Magnesium hydroxide could increase soil pH, but due to the low solubility of $Mg(OH)_2$, the effect on pH was limited on the surface soil. Soil pH was lowered in the $MgSO_4$ treatment and the effect was found through the 20 cm depth. Since the pH decrease in $MgSO_4$ treated soil was due to the salts from $MgSO_4$, after leaching of most salts from the investigated soil depth pH was not significantly different from that of non-treated soil. Soil EC was increased in $MgSO_4$ treatment through the soil depth, but in $Mg(OH)_2$ treatment EC was slightly increased only at the surface layer. Exchangeable Mg was increased in both of the treatments at surface layer after the first water application. In $Mg(OH)_2$ treatment, the increase of exchangeable Mg was found only at 5 cm depth through the experiment, but leaching down of Mg in the $MgSO_4$ treatment was very apparent. High concentration of Mg in the $MgSO_4$ treated soil could effectively replace exchangeable Ca through the investigated soil depth, but the effect of $Mg(OH)_2$ on exchangeable Ca was not significant.
In order to gain information on the plant characteristics of high yielding paddy from the point of view of mineral nutrition and to learn more about soil conditions under which high yields are produced a number of soil samples collected from the field experiment carried out in The City College of Seoul were analysed. In addition, a laboratory experiment carried out to support the field experiment was also analysed. Results obtained are as follows: 1. Generally, the higher the yield of paddy, the higher is the potassium content in flag leaves, whereas the reverse is true for the content of Ca and Mg in the leaves. From these facts it can conceivably be said that the high yielding paddy should absorb a large quantity of potassium and a lesser quantity of calcium and magnesium in the reproductive stage. 2. Leaves of paddy which produced yields over 600kg/10a (a comparatively high yield in the experiment) contained 30-35mg/100g of potassium, less than 25me/100g of calcium, and 10me/100g of magnesium which brings the ratio of $K/{\sqrt{Ca+Mg}}$ over 5. 3. Correlation studies indicated a remarkable relationship between the paddy yield and exchangeable potassium in soil samples taken after harvesting. A similar relationship was observed between the yield of paddy and $K/{\sqrt{Cae+Mge}}$ ratio of the soil samples. 4. A regression between yield of padcy (Y) and exchangeable potassium (Ke) or $K/{\sqrt{Ca+Mg}}$ in soil samples taken after harvesting was shown to be; Y=183.95+2135.86Ke $$Y=352.45+3114.454\;K/{\sqrt{Ca+Mg}}$$ 5. The regression between exchangeable potassium (Ke) in soil samples taken after harvesting and the amount of lime (L) and potassium (P) to be applied is; $$Ke=0.1246+0.00007037L+0.004444P+0.000004444L{\cdot}P$$.
In order to obtain the basic informations on the reasonable fertilization and soil management systems for a high soybean yield, both soybean leaves and soils were collected from 24 soybean-cultivated fields in central area of Korea, and analyzed. For this study, soybean leaves and soil were sampled together in July of 1988(growing season), and soil alone in October of 1988 (harvesting season) and April of 1989(sowing season) at each sampling site. The results might be summarized as follows: 1. The soil pH ranged between 4.8 and 6.8. and the pH after harvest decreased to 5.4 which compared with the pH 5.7 of growing season. 2. Both the 1N KCl extractable Al and the 1N $NH_4OAc$ extractable Al in soils were inversely correlated with the soil pH. the former concentration was negligible above pH 5.8. 3. The soil total-N and Bray 1-P after harvest were lower than those of growing season. The Bray 1-P's of sample soils were very high irrespective of sampling time. 4. The exchangeable Ca and Mg in soils even after harvest varied little whereas the exchangeable K decreased with time. 5. The N content in soybean leaves was not correlated with soil total-N, but highly correlated with the K content in soybean leaves. The Mg content in soybean leaves was also highly correlated with Ca content in suybean leaves and exchangeable Mg in soils.

Some physico-chemical properties such as surface area, moisture content, cation exchange capacity, swelling rate, pH, viscosity and liquid limit have been determined for evaluation of Cabentonite deposit occurring in four localities; Yonil, Gampo, Haseo and Pohang, in Gyeongsang-do. Montmorillonite contents can be derived from surface area measurement. Enhancement of liquid limit values and swelling volume were observed in the samples which had higher exchangeable Na ion and finer particle-size distribution. Identical results were observed even in the Na-exchanged samples. This suggests that aggregation effects have a great influence on physico-chemical properties. Aggregation of montmorillonite were controlled not only burial depth but also composition of exchangeable cation. Consequently, sample occurred in Yonil area where has the greatest burial depth in the area show somewhat lower physico-chemical properties than those of samples occurred in the other localities. However, the basic test applied in this study provides very useful preliminary information relating to its commercial potential.
Lime requirement determination methods were experimentally compared and evaluated for the soils with different physico-chemical properties. The selected soils were mainly distributed in paddy field of Kangweon-Province; Anmi series from limestone region, Dongsong series from basalt region, Gyuam and Gangseo series from alluvial soil. The results were as follows: 1. Differences of soil lime requirement among seven methods ($CaCO_3$ incubation method, $BaCl_2$-TEA method, SMP-single buffer method, Double buffer method, Adams and Evans method, SMP-double buffer method, and O. R. D. method) were remarkably appeared. 2. Measuring lime values by $CaCO_3$ incubation method which is fixed on the basis of lime requirement, SMP-double buffer method was most acceptable for selected soils except Gyuam series, while $BaCl_2$-TEA method showed the highest value, and O. R. D. method was the lowest. 3. Exchangeable Al content of soils was neutralixed near to 70%, but 30% of extractable reached to neutralize when incubated with 100% lime equivalence. 4. Lime requirements based on exchangeable and extractable Al contents of soils were lower than that of $CaCO_3$ incubation method.
