  • This article is to apply the tunnel support system selected after comparatively analyzing of RMR and tunnel instrumentation between the tunnel behavior characteristic predicted through geotechnical investigations and the numerical analysis at the design stage and the properties deformation occurred at the construction stage. This attempt results from the behavior characteristic of the tunnel excavation ground shown differently in accordance with the ground quality and reinforcement method. This, therefore, provide the data and results analysed the actual decision RMR-crown settlement & convergence and reduction of material property of ground as parameters. Also, it's shown that the tunnel designer is able to predict tunnel behavior characteristic when designing in bedrock areas excessively distributed faults and fractured zones.

  • Rock is a heterogeneous material, which introduces complexity in the analysis of rock slopes, since both the existing discontinuities within the rock mass and the intact rock contribute to the degradation of strength. Rock failure is often catastrophic due to the brittle nature of the material, involving the sliding along structural planes and the fracturing of rock bridge. This paper proposes an advanced discretization method of rock mass based on block theory. An in-house software, GeoSMA-3D, has been developed to generate the discrete fracture network (DFN) model, considering both measured and artificial joints. Measured joints are obtained from the photogrammetry analysis on the excavation face. Statistical tools then facilitate to derive artificial joints within the rock mass. Key blocks are searched to provide guidance on potential reinforcement measures. The discretized blocky system is subsequently implemented into a discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) code. Strength reduction technique is employed to analyze the stability of the slope, where the factor of safety can be obtained once excessive deformation of slope profile is observed. The combined analysis approach also provides the failure mode, which can be used to guide the choice of strengthening strategy if needed. Finally, an illustrated example is presented for the analysis of a rock slope of 20 m height inclined at $60^{\circ}$ using combined GeoSMA-3D and DDA calculation.

  • The interest in the use of shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) on the tunnel excavation has been increased rapidly in Korea. The shield TBM tunnel is generally designed as non-drainage tunnel. Consequently, if water leakage through the segment joints happens, big problems on the usage and stability of tunnel can be occurred. In this study, the variation of waterproof capacity of hydrophilic waterstop by the construction error and excessive displacement of segment was studied firstly. Secondly, the decrease of durability of hydrophilic waterstop by the sulphate and chloride contained in the groundwater and seawater was investigated. The results showed that if the angle discordance at the segment joints is beyond the 2 degree, the proper waterproof capacity of hydrophilic waterstop can not be guaranteed. In addition, if the hydrophilic rubber waterstop is exposed to the sulphate for a while, the proper durability of hydrophilic waterstop can not be expected.

  • While promoting a variety of projects by using sea space, there has been a lot of social controversy among the stakeholders based on the results of the analysis. In particular, the benefits of fisheries sector were over-estimated and occurred a lot of opposition from fishermen and environment groups. In order to this solve, we have been studied focussed such as excavation of new projects, the method and result of the estimated benefits for fisheries sector. With regard to the tidal power plant of Garolim, we came up with five kinds of problems such as doing not reflect of the cost of the initial investment, over unit production, over unit price, excessive selection of breed, issues of cost of production in benefits study of fisheries sector derived previously. In order to these problems, we have derived new profitable projects based on the initial materials such as improvement of raising breed, discharge project of fingerlings and a small sea ranch project. As a result, previous study was analyzed in 30.2 billion won(1993), 54.8billion won(2009), but this study was estimated to 26.4 billion won and differences of benefits amount were occurred. In a previous study was calculated benefits by simple method, but this study came up with new projects for fisheries sector and because we estimated benefits considering new project. The method for benefits calculations for fisheries sector was not attempted in previous studies and in this study, we approached for the first time Also, in this study suggested new method to increase incomes fishermen such as development of suitable ranch breeding for the marine environment, ranch license(limited license), development of fisheries resources and the operation of fisheries facility. In the future, we hope to be helpful for the same field of study.

  • Recently, as construction market scale is getting bigger and transportation industry is developing, the underground structure construction such as subway, tunnel (excavation box) or shield tunnel structure is becoming more diverse, and its demand is gradually increasing. However, for the concrete structures constructed underground, the water leakage is occurred due to the expansion joint and construction joint, or movement, uneven settlement, excessive load and vibration during application causing cracks. Many waterproofing method and materials are used in jobsites, but areas such as underground railroad and subway that has movement and vibration at all times, the ability of waterproofing layer is declined causing repetitive water leakage due to crack, erosion and separation, which is a vicious cycle. Therefore, this study evaluates the responsiveness to a movement for adhesive/flexible waterproofing material that can cope with the vibration and the movement of the structure. Also to recommend a waterproofing technology that can cope with structure movement through examples of actual jobsite applications such as subway and tunnel where there are constant movement and vibration.

  • The concrete plug in an underground cavern prevents the stored product (oil, gas, etc) from leaking and the excessive show of underground water, so it plays an important role in construction and operation of the storage cavern. Additionally, it should maintain its stability under every possible loading condition. Once the plug is constructed, the cavern is isolated from the external access. Therefore, mechanical and hydraulic consideration should be made in construction to fulfill its function. Therefore, in this study, numerical analyses were conducted to study the optimal shape and thickness of the plug with respect to the various conditions of installation depth, the shape of the plug, in-situ stress ratio (K), the condition of rock-plug interface, and the effect of Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ). This paper also presents the effect of slot depth on the hydraulic behavior of the plug. These analyses were carried out by using the 2-dimensional finite difference code, rm FLAC, and the 3D code, m FLA $C^{3D}$./.

  • Rock mass is very inhomogeneous in nature and data obtained by site investigations and tests are very limited. For this reason, many uncertainties are to be included in the process of constructing structures in rock mass. In the design of a tunnel, support pattern, advance rate, and excavation method, which are important design parameters, must be determined to be optimal. However, it is not easy to determine those parameters. Moreover if those parameters are determined incorrectly, unexpected risk occurs such as decrease in the stability of a tunnel or economic loss due to the excessive supports etc. In this study, how to determine an optimal support pattern and advance rate, which are the important tunnel design parameters, is introduced based on a risk analysis. It can be confirmed quantitatively that the more supported a tunnel is, the larger reliability index becomes and the more stable the tunnel becomes. Also an optimal support pattern and advance rate can be determined quantitatively by performing a risk analysis considering construction cost and the cost of loss which can be occurred due to the collapse of a tunnel.

  • Rock bolt is one of the most important supports for tunnelling to prevent excessive ground relaxation at the primary tunnel excavation stage. It forms a ground arch band by confining the ground around a tunnel. Rock bolt has various effects, such as support or hanging effect, internal pressure effect, arching effect, ground improvement effect etc. Most studies on rock bolt focused on the concept of support, but only a few researches on the ground reinforcing effect by pre-tensioning a rock bolts. In this study, large scale model tests are performed to investigate the ground reinforcing effect of rock bolts for regularly jointed rocks. Simple beam model was built to find out the reinforcing effect of jointed rocks, which was reinforced by pre-tensioned rock bolts. Settlement of model beam was analyzed through measuring its sagging for various installation intervals.
