  • A spreadsheet is a office automation software which has been widely used in almost all areas in business. A spreadsheet is used for calculation, data analysis, model building and so on. As a result, spreadsheet is a very important tool for generating knowlege in a firm. Errors in a spreadsheet model can cause a serious financial damage in a corporation. However in Korea few researches for reducing errors have been performed. Neither serious efforts to reduce errors have been executed by corporations. In this research we provided summarized the results from a survey for spreadsheet usage, summarized researches on errors in spreadsheet up to now, and suggested a rules and structured development method for reducing errors in a spreadsheet. Errors in spreadsheets are prevalent. To solve this serious problem, we need much more attention on this problem in research area. Corporations must put more efforts on setting policies and rules. And also we need the government's concern and support.

  • New attempt has been made on Management Science (MS) education since the end of 1990s. The most distinctive feature of the new attempt is using spreadsheet program like Excel as a teaching tool for MS course. The spreadsheet program gives an excellent tool for modeling and solvina MS problems. In order to improve the pedagogical effect through using the spreadsheet program for MS course, new teaching model based on spreadsheet encompassing new course contents, effective instruction method, and examination method is needed. For this purpose, professors teaching MS should share their own teaching experiences and methods. So this paper explains remarkable functions of Excel and how to use them for the MS tools. This paper also stresses the importance of team project and case study to improve the effect of MS education through the use of Excel and presents some tips on MS education.

  • New method has been widely used for teaching Management Science since the mid of 1990s. The new teaching method is distinguished from traditional method in several aspects. The mowt distintion of the new method is that Excel based approach is used in order to model and analyze quantitative problems. Due to the introduction of Excel based teaching method model formulation and interpretation is more emphasized than algorithms. By using this new method students are expected to be more interested in Management Science class and easily use several Management Science techniques in real world problems. Though Excel based teaching method has become more prevalent, there exist no empirical research to analyze the effectiveness of Excel based teaching method. This paper will empirically analyze how effective Excel based teaching method is. For this purpose survey data are collected fro professors teaching Management Science and analyzed by using t-test.

  • An analytical model was developed in this study and then implemented into a tool for automation of FEA (Finite Element Analysis) of a spindle system for natural frequencies and modes in the universal FEA software, ANSYS. VBA of EXCEL was used for the implementation. It allowed graphic user interfaces (GUIs) to be developed for a user to interact with the tool and, in addition, an EXCEL spreadsheet to be used for data arrangement. A code was developed in the language of ANSYS to generate the geometric model of the spindle system, sequentially to construct the analytical model based on the information in the GUIs, and finally to perform computation for the FEA. Its automation of the model generation and analysis can help to identify a near optimal design of the spindle system under design in minimum time and efforts.

  • Many researcher uses simulation techniques for understanding the phenomenon and expecting the response. Simulation techniques have many advantages which is less time-consuming, easy to control constraints, and cheaper than experimental study. However Researches usually are not good at programming the model, it's hard to implement simulation model using computer language. They use spreadsheet program like Microsoft $excel^{TM}$ Although a spreadsheet program is good for modeling, it's cumbersome to describe expressions which consist of not variable name but location indicator. This study suggests the program which helps researcher developing model using graphical interface and variable name. For verifying usability, the model which is implemented by developed modeler were compared with by spreadsheet program.

  • Objectives: The major objective of this study was to develop a tier 2 exposure model combining tier 1 exposure model estimates and worker monitoring data and suggesting narrower exposure ranges than tier 1 results. Methods: Bayesian statistics were used to develop a tier 2 exposure model as was done for the European Union (EU) tier 2 exposure models, for example Advanced REACH Tools (ART) and Stoffenmanager. Bayesian statistics required a prior and data to calculate the posterior results. In this model, tier 1 estimated serving as a prior and worker exposure monitoring data at the worksite of interest were entered as data. The calculation of Bayesian statistics requires integration over a range, which were performed using a Riemann sum algorithm. From the calculated exposure estimates, 95% range was extracted. These algorithm have been realized on Excel spreadsheet for convenience and easy access. Some fail-proof features such as locking the spreadsheet were added in order to prevent errors or miscalculations derived from careless usage of the file. Results: The tier 2 exposure model was successfully built on a separate Excel spreadsheet in the same file containing tier 1 exposure model. To utilize the model, exposure range needs to be estimated from tier 1 model and worker monitoring data, at least one input are required. Conclusions: The developed tier 2 exposure model can help industrial hygienists obtain a narrow range of worker exposure level to a chemical by reflecting a certain set of job characteristics.

  • A break-even analysis is a method used widely for profit planning or decisions in most companies. It is useful tool in financial studies because it is simple and offers useful insights from a modest amount of data. Although it is widely used, it has some weaknesses. It is limited in particular to the analysis for a short term time horizon or one period. We suggest a new break-even procedure to analyze projects with a long term time horizon as keeping the simplicity of a conventional break-even analysis. We will make efforts doing to include actual data for a cost or an income as much as possible rather than developing a mathematical model to improve unreality of a traditional break-even analysis. Also, we will use the spreadsheet software to solve problems.

  • This paper presents a spreadsheet-based reliability prediction simulation framework for the conceptual product design stage to acquire system reliability information in timely manner. During early stage, reliability performance deals with both known and unknown failure rates and component-level and subsystem-level failure estimate to predict system reliability. A technique for performing life testing simulation using Excel spreadsheet has been developed under the such circumstances. This paper also discuss the results obtainable from this method such as reliability estimate, mean and variance of failures and confidence intervals. The resultant of this reliability prediction system is mainly benefitting small and medium-sized enterprise's field engineers.

  • This paper reviews the categories and properties of risk measures, analyzes the classes and structural equations of volatility forecasting models, and presents the practical methodologies and their expansion methods of estimating and forecasting the volatilities of exchange rates using Excel spreadsheet modeling. We apply the GARCH(1,1) model to the Korean won(KRW) denominated daily and monthly exchange rates of USD, JPY, EUR, GBP, CAD and CNY during the periods from January 4, 1998 to December 31, 2009, make the estimates of long-run variances in the returns of exchange rate calculated as the step-by-step change rate, and test the adequacy of estimated GARCH(1,1) model using the Box-Pierce-Ljung statistics Q and chi-square test-statistics. We demonstrate the adequacy of GARCH(1,1) model in estimating and forecasting the volatility of exchange rates in the monthly series except the semi-variance GARCH(1,1) applied to KRW/JPY100 rate. But we reject the adequacy of GARCH(1,1) model in estimating and forecasting the volatility of exchange rates in the daily series because of the very high Box-Pierce-Ljung statistics in the respective time lags resulting to the self-autocorrelation. In conclusion, the GARCH(1,1) model provides for the easy and helpful tools to forecast the exchange rate volatilities and may become the powerful methodology to overcome the application difficulties with the spreadsheet modeling.

  • Many current researches are limited in the statistics field, which is a part of mathematics class in the secondary school. Moreover, it's hard to apply to the elementary school since they are written in English. To overcome this limitations, the objectives from the unit that is suitable for using EXCEL in the elementary mathematics lessons are selected in this research. And a problem-based learning model for these lessons would be introduced that it can help students to focus on solving substances of the problems by reducing the time for arithmetic calculation.
