One of the most important issues in tunneling, is the squeezing phenomenon. Squeezing can occur during excavation or after the construction of tunnels, which in both cases could lead to significant damages. Therefore, it is important to predict the squeezing and consider it in the early design stage of tunnel construction. Different empirical, semi-empirical and theoretical-analytical methods have been presented to determine the squeezing. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the ability of each of these methods and identify the best method among them. In this study, squeezing in a part of the Alborz service tunnel in Iran was estimated through a number of empirical, semi- empirical and theoretical-analytical methods. Among these methods, the most robust model was used to obtain a database including 300 data for training and 33 data for testing in order to develop a machine learning (ML) method. To this end, three ML models of Gaussian process regression (GPR), artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector regression (SVR) were trained and tested to propose a robust model to predict the squeezing phenomenon. A comparative analysis between the conventional and the ML methods utilized in this study showed that, the GPR model is the most robust model in the prediction of squeezing phenomenon. The sensitivity analysis of the input parameters using the mutual information test (MIT) method showed that, the most sensitive parameter on the squeezing phenomenon is the tangential strain (ε_θ^α) parameter with a sensitivity score of 2.18. Finally, the GPR model was recommended to predict the squeezing phenomenon in tunneling projects. This work's significance is that it can provide a good estimation of the squeezing phenomenon in tunneling projects, based on which geotechnical engineers can take the necessary actions to deal with it in the pre-construction designs.

Recently, the number of shallow tunnel construction increases to improve the structural safety and environment-friendliness. In semi-cut-and-cover Method, ground is excavated to the crown arch level and arch slab is set to backfill before the excavation of lower face. In this study, laboratory model tests was performed to clarify the behavior of the arch slab constructed perpendicular to the slope. Results show that Arch slab is affected by perpendicular to the slope and bedrocks. Negative moment at the upper part of the arch slab at hillside and positive moment at the upper part at the other side are generated as perpendicular to the slope increases. Reaction load at the hillside support was larger than that at the other side.

When constructing a subsea tunnel in discontinuous rock mass, fluid flow in joints has a great influence on the behavior of the tunnel so that hydro-mechanical coupled analysis should be performed for the stability estimation. In practice, relaxed rock load is generally used for the design of tunnel concrete lining. In a continuum analysis, a method based on the distribution of local safety factor around a tunnel was proposed for the estimation of a potential relaxed zone. However, in the case of discontinuous rock mass in which joints are developed, the whole stability of tunnels depends on the behavior of the joints. In this study, therefore, a method is proposed for the estimation of a potential relaxed zone occurred by the excavation of a tunnel in discontinuous rock mass. The suggested method is validated by sensitivity analysis and the comparison with the results of continuum analysis.
This study, a vertical double-deck method using an electronic detonator was applied to increase excavation volume and reduce blast pollution. In the double deck method, there is a possibility that blasting efficiency may be reduced if bottom deck blasting is carried out without the free surface being completely formed after upper deck blasting. And for this reason, the blasting efficiency of the double deck method varies depending on the deck delay time. Therefore, in this study, we proposed four deck delay times applying 1 to 5 times the hole delay time. And blasting efficiency was evaluated according to fragmentation analysis. As a result of the fragmentation evaluation, the fragmentation of pattern 4 (deck delay time = hole delay time×5) was the best, but it was confirmed that fragmentation efficiency increased significantly from pattern 3 (deck delay time = hole delay time×3). Accordingly, it is analyzed that when blasting a vertical double deck, the deck delay time must be at least three times the hole delay time to obtain an efficient blasting effect.

The pipe jacking method which is a non-excavation method is frequently used due to constructability and economical efficiency in a medium or small-sized pipeline construction. However, jacking process of the method still causes problems that the base ground is disturbed and loosen. These lead to surface settlement, strength decrease and leakage of water. Therefore, this study presents in-situ application of the steel pipe jacking with grouting, and it is that jacking and grouting are progressed simultaneously. To verify this, the steel pipe jacking with grouting and the existing steel pipe jacking have been constructed on the same ground condition. It has been proved that the steel pipe jacking with grouting is in-situ applicable according to results of monitoring surface settlement, in-situ density, GPR geophysical prospecting and large scale direct shear test.

One of the most general methods that can evaluate the rippability is the seismic exploration. However, most field engineers have hardly used the seismic exploration. Instead of using the seismic exploration, they have usually used rock hammer and naked eyes to confirm the degree of rippability for soil, ripping rock and blasting rock. Therefore, to excavate the ground rationally, it is required to establish a quantitative criterion that can be used for distinguishing rippability. In this study, we find out the characteristics of rock strength through laboratory and field tests. The weathering condition of rock exposed to air due to excavation of soil layer and the variation of rock strength caused by weathering were investigated. A relationship between rock strength values that are obtained from uniaxial compression test, slaking durability test, point load test, schmidt hammer test and absorption ratio test is analyzed. The relationship is expressed in a form of equation by which we can evaluate the rock strengths obtained from simple laboratory and field tests. To evaluate rippability in a reasonable manner, a quantitative approach is proposed and a check list of rippability is developed based on the proposed methodology. It is recommended to modify the proposed method for evaluation of rippability in the field.
Since there is 70% of the land in South Korea is forest, tunnel constructions by blasting are common for building railways and roads. The damage to the bedrock and the development of overbreak near the face of the tunnel during the blasting directly affect the safety of the tunnel and the maintenance after the construction. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the damage zone in the bedrock after the blasting. The damage zone changes the properties of the bedrock and decreases the safety. Especially, the coefficient of permeability of the damaged bedrock increases dramatically, which is considered very important in construction. There is a lack of research on the damage that bedrock is received with respect to the amount of explosives in blasting, which is required for the design of optimum support in blast excavation that maximizes the support of the bedrock. Therefore, in this research, numerical analysis was performed based on the field experiment data in order to understand the mechanical characteristics of the bedrock after to the blast load and to analyze the damage that the bedrock receives from the blast load. In addition, a method was proposed for selecting the optimum blast pressure for train tunnel design with respect to the damage zone.
This paper investigated the magnitude and distribution of earth pressure on the support system in jointed rock mass by considering different earth pressure coefficients, rock types and joint inclination angles. The study mainly focused on the effect of the earth pressure coefficients on the earth pressure. Based on a physical model test (Son & Park, 2014), extended studies were conducted considering rock-structure interactions based on the discrete element method, which can consider the joints characteristics of rock mass. The results showed that the earth pressure was highly influenced by the earth pressure coefficients as well as the rock type and joint inclination angles. The effects of the earth pressure coefficients increased when the rock suffered more weathering and has no joint slide. The test results were also compared with Peck's earth pressure for soil ground, and clearly showed that the earth pressure in jointed rock mass can be greatly different from that in soil ground. This study indicated the earth pressure coefficients considering the rock types and joint inclination angles are important parameters influencing the magnitude and distribution of earth pressure, which should be considered when designing the support systems in jointed rock mass.
In the case of the drilled shaft, one of the methods for calculating unit skin friction stress of rock socket parts is to measure the roughness of the excavated face. This method is to estimate the unit skin frictional resistance using a device which measures the roughness shape of the excavated face in the excavation step. In this study, the roughness shapes of the face of the rock socket part in the drilled shaft were measured directly in the perforated hole and the results are used to identify the characteristics of the unit skin friction of the bedrock. In addition, the static load test and the load transfer test were performed on the same pile to verify the result of the roughness test.

The use of Compaction Grouting evolved in the 1950's to correct structural settlement of buildings. Over the almost 50 years, the technology has developed and is currently used in wide range of applications. Compaction Grouting, the injection of a very stiff, 'zero-slump' mortar grout under relatively high pressure, displaces and compacts soils. It can effectively repair natural or man-made soil strength deficiencies in variety of soil formations. Major uses of Compaction Grouting include densifying loose soils or fill voids caused by sinkholes, poorly compacted fills, broken utilities, improper dewatering, or soft ground tunneling excavation. Other application include preventing liquefaction, re-leveling settled structures, and using compaction grout bulbs as structural elements of minipiles or underpinning. The technique replaced slurry injection, or 'pressure grouting', as the preferred method of densification grouting. There are several reasons for the increased use of Compaction Grouting which can be summarized in one word: CONTROL. The low slump grout and injection processes are usually designed to keep the grout in a homogeneous mass at the point of injection, while acceptable in some limited applications, tends to quickly get out of control. Hydraulic soil fracturing can cause extensive grout travel, often well beyond the desired treatment zone. So, on the basis of the two case history constructed in recent year, a study has been peformed to analyze the basic mechanism of the Compaction Grouting and verify the effectiveness of the ground improvement using some test methods.
