Today, a shortage of the skilled operator has been intensified gradually and the necessity of an earthwork in extreme environment operators are difficult to access is increasing for the purpose of resource development and new living space creation. For this reason, an effort to develop an unmanned excavation robot for fully automated earthwork system is continuing globally. In Korea, a research consortium called 'Intelligent Excavation System' has been formed since 2006 as a part of Construction Technology Innovation Program of Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs of Korea. Among detailed technologies of the Task Planning System is one of the core technologies of IES, this paper explains research and development process of the Local Area Design Module, which provides informatization unit to create automated excavators' work command information at operation level such as location, range, target, and sequence for excavation work. Designing of Local Area should be considered various influential factors such as excavator's specification, working mechanism, heuristics, and structural stability to create work plan guaranteed safety and effectiveness. For this research, conceptual and detail design of the Local Area is performed for analyzing design element and variable, and quantization method of design specification corresponding with heuristics and structural safety is generated. Finally, module is developed through constructed algorithm and developed module is verified.

It is necessary to conduct a detailed geotechnical investigation on the tunnel section in order to secure the tunnel design and construction stability. It is necessary for the importance of geotechnical investigation that needed for the analysis of distribution and size of fractured fault zone and distribution of groundwater in tunnel. However, if it is difficult to perform the ground survey in the tunnel design due to ground condition of the tunnel section and the limited conditions such as civil complaint, the tunnel design is performed using the result of the minimum survey. Therefore, if weathered fault zone exists in the face the reinforcement method is determined in the design process to secure the stability of the tunnel. The most important factor in reinforcing the tunnel excavation surface is to secure the stability of the tunnel by performing quick reinforcement. In particular, if groundwater leaching occurs on the excavation surface, more rapid reinforcement is needed. In this study, fractured fault zone exists on the tunnel excavation surface and displacement occurs due to weathered fracture zone. When the amount of groundwater leaching rapidly increased under the condition of displacement, the behavior of tunnel displacement was analyzed based on tunnel collapse. In the study, reinforcement measures were taken because the first stage displacement did not converge continuously. After the first reinforcement, the displacement was not converged due to increased groundwater leaching and the second stage displacement occurred and chimney collapse occurred.
Based on the field measuring data obtained from excavation sections in Inchon International Airport project, the relationships between the horizontal displacement of sheet-pile walls and the deformations of soft ground around the excavation were investigated. The horizontal displacements of walls according to supporting method occur, and the displacements were found to become larger in the order of anchors, anchors with struts, and struts. The depths of maximum horizontal displacement are varied with supporting systems. If the stability number shows lower than ${\pi}$, the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity of maximum horizontal displacement are respectively developed less than $1\%$ of excavation depth and 1mm/day. When the stability number shows lower than ${\pi}+2$, the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity are respectively developed less than $2.5\%$ of excavation depth and 2mm/day. Also, when the stability number shows more than ${\pi}+2$, the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity rapidly increase. Also, the maximum horizontal displacement is found to increase rapidly when N value is less than 10. The maximum horizontal displacement increases with decreasing the factor of safety against basal heave (Terzaghi, 1943), and the maximum horizontal displacement is found to increase rapidly when the factor of safety against basal heave is greater than 2.0. This value can be proposed as the criterion for the factor of safety against basal heave in Korea.

Rock mass includes natural discontinuities such as joints and faults during its formation. Discontinuities are also referred as planes of weakness because of their weak mechanical characteristics. In the design of underground structures, it is necessary to consider the properties of discontinuities to insure the stability. During the excavation of a tunnel, these discontinuities have to be identified as early as possible so that proper change in excavation method or support design can be made accordingly. The excavation of the tunnel in a stable rock mass causes a 3-dimensional arching effect around the excavation face. It was revealed by previous studies that the existence of a weak zone or a fault zone ahead of tunnel foe induces a typical displacement tendency of convergence. For better understanding of the meaning of influence/trend lines of various displacement components, three-dimensional numerical analyses were conducted while varying deformation moduli, thicknesses and orientations of discontinuities. Numerical results showed that the changes in influence/trend lines of various displacement components were very similar to those by measurements. The discrepancies from the expected values were dependent on the physical properties, thicknesses and orientations of discontinuities.
The ground anchor support system may not be occasionally used because of space limitations in urban excavation sites nearby the existing structures. In this case, soil nailing system with relatively short length of nails could be efficiently adopted as an alternative method. The general soil nailing support system, however, may result in excessive deformations particularly in an excavation zone of the existing weak subsoils. Pretensioning the soil nails then could play important roles to reduce deformations mainly in the upper part of the nailed-soil excavation system as well as to improve local stability. In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PSN (Pretension Soil Nailing), is developed to reduce both facing displacements and ground surface settlements in top-down excavation process as well as to increase the global stability. Up to now, the analytical procedure and design technique are proposed to evaluate maximum pretension force and stability of the PSN system. Also, proposed are techniques to determine the required thickness of a shotcrete facing and to estimate probability of a failure against the punching shear, Based on the proposed procedure and technique, effects of the radius of a influence circle and dilatancy angle on the thickness of a shotcrete facing, bonded length and safety factors are analyzed. In addition, effects of the reduction of deformations expected by pretension of the soil nails are examined in detail throughout an illustrative example and the $FLAC^{2D}$ program analysis. And a numerical approach is proposed PSN system using the shear strength reduction technique with the $FLAC^{2D}$ program.
A calcareous rock slope failed during excavation of the slope for construction of a tunnel entrance. The slope is located at the construction site for widening highway in Yeongwol, Korea. Field surveys, laboratory tests, and numerical analyses were performed to determine the reason for the slope failure. The numerical analysis revealed that the safety factor of the slope before construction of the entrance was less than 1, and that this decreased after construction. After construction of the entrance, the sliding zone of the slope increased and slope stability decreased because the shear strain and plastic zone in the slope over the tunnel entrance showed an increase relative to the lower part of the slope. To enhance the stability of the slope for construction of the tunnel entrance, countermeasures such as rock bolts, rock anchors, and FRP (Fiber glass Reinforced Plastic) grouting were adopted in light of the field conditions. Serial field monitoring performed to confirm the reinforcing effects of the adopted countermeasures revealed a small amount of horizontal deformation of the slope soils, most of the elastic deformation that can regain its former value. In addition, the axial forces of the rock bolt and anchor were more strongly affected by slope excavation during construction of the tunnel entrance than by tunnel excavation or the rainy season, and the axial forces tended to converge after excavation of the tunnel. Therefore, we can confirm that the slope is currently safe.
On sites where explosives are used, the effects of noise and vibration produced by the blast wave are subject to a number of operational restrictions. Recently, the number of civil complaints has increased and the standard of environmental regulations on secure goods has been greatly tighten. Therefore, work is generally carried out by machine excavation in case of close proximity of safety thing. Machine excavation methods have the advantage as reducing noise and vibration compared to blasting methods, but depending on the conditions of rock intended to be excavated, they are sometimes less constructive than planned. In general, the closer a rock type is to hard rock, the less constructible it becomes. In this paper, we are going to explain the construction of a construction section with a close proximity to a safety thing using electronic detonators. While the project site was designed with a machine excavation methods due to the close(9.9m) proximity of safety thing(the railroad), construction using electronic detonators was reviewed as an alternative method for improving rate of advance time and construction efficiency when expose to hard rock. Through blasting using electronic detonators, construction and economic efficiency were maximized while minimizing impact on surrounding safety things. Because $HiTRONIC^{TM}$, which is produced by Hanwha, has innovative stability and high explosion reliability, it is able to explode with high-precision accuracy. Electronic detonators are widely used in construction sites of railway or highway, other urban burrowing areas and large limestone mines.
An assesment technique for the quantitative evaluation of tunnel safety during tunnel excavation was newly proposed in this study using displacement measurements. First of all, field measurement guidelines used at tunnel construction sites in Korea and other countries were investigated. It was found out that the criteria of the guidelines were not clear and varied depending on the construction sites. The practical use of field measurement data for the evaluation of tunnel safety was very limited due to uncertainties of the guidelines related to the interpretation of measured data during the excavation. Critical strain concept is introduced in this study for the assesment of tunnel safety during the tunnel excavation. Moreover, the characteristics of tunnel displacements caused by the tunnel excavation were investigated in detail in order to investigate the practical application of the critical strain concept. The total tunnel displacements can be subdivided into three parts: displacements occurring ahead of tunnel face, displacements occurring prior to measurements, and displacements occurring after the installation of instruments. The characteristic of each portion of displacements is analysed in this study. Finally, a general method on the use of the displacement measurement data for the critical strain concept was suggested in the concrete manner, considering the field measurement practice in Korea.

To protect the surface of ground-cutting slopes and ground-raised slopes and to recover environment-friendly slopes at the national road expansion construction between Gamchon and Yaechon, test-construction work was done using several modes of hydro-seeding measures to select a suitable construction method through the field survey; the results were as follows : As a result of survey on physio-chemical characteristics of soil, the average soil inclination on ground-raised slopes was from 4.73 mm to 5.37 mm; the average soil acidity was from pH 6.47 to 6.73; the average soil humidity was within the scope of 0.57~1.70 %,; the average soil inclination on ground-cutting slopes was 9.17~10.43mm; the average soil acidity was pH 6.67~6.77 and the average soil humidity was within the scope of 0.53~1.27 %; considered overall, they showed generally satisfactory base materials for plant breeding. As a result of the number of sprouting individuals, the average sprouting number of individuals on test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray construction methods and the average number of sprouting individuals on other test spots executed by furrow-digging with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures were 1,172 number of per square meter and 970 number of per square meter respectively; thus they showed higher numerical value comparing with other test spots. Likewise, the average number of sprouting individuals on test spots of the ground-cutting slopes executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and the average number of sprouting individuals on other test spot executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures were found to be 1,107 number of per square meter and 1,105 number of per square meter respectively, whose numerical value showed rather higher other test spots. As a result of a survey on living plants' breeding index [dried weight], the weight in dried state on test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and other test spots executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures on both ground-raised and ground-cutting slopes was found to be higher and showed similar characteristics statistically. As a result of survey on the surface-covering degree of ground-raised slopes, nine weeks after test construction, test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and other test spots executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures showed commonly more than 70% of surface-covering degree, but other test spots showed only below 35% of surface covering degree; especially in case of test spots by Verdvol seed spray measures, they showed 10% of the lowest surface-covering. Surface-covering degree on the test spot of ground-cutting slopes nine weeks after test construction showed more than 75% both executed by Coir net with Seed spray construction method and executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures. As a result of survey on appearing plants on the test spots, there dominates Eragrostis curvula both on ground-raised slopes and on ground-cutting slopes with other seeding plant life's lower breeding and there appear intruders, such as Setaria viridis Beauv, Digitaria sanguinalis Scop, and Chenopodium album var.centrorubrum Makino. As for water-borne excavation and soil's washing-away on the slopes, there happened less washing-away and water-borne excavation with good breeding of plant life on test spots executed both by Coir net with Seed spray construction method and by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures, but there happened much more soil's washing-away along with water-home excavation at the test spot executed by Seed spray with measures. After the research results of test construction sites are examined overall, it's presumed that furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures [interval between lines is 40cm, 5cm in depth] will be preferred to prevent erosion and water-home excavation of slopes located within the construction sites.
In order to investigate the effect of progressive collapse of underground circular opening on surface subsidence, laboratory model tests were performed. The modelling materials were sand which has been used as KS standard. Six test models which had respectively different depths of openings were produced. Surface subsidence and horizontal displacements were measured according to progressive collapse of underground opening. Some subsidence prediction method such as NCB method, profile function method and influence function method were considered to predict the subsidence of sand models. The profile function method approximated by Gaussian error function was finally suggested as the most appropriate to sand models.
