  • The theoretical foundations of GA are the Schema Theorem and the Building Block Hypothesis. In the Meaning of these foundational concepts, simple genetic algorithm(SGA) allocate more trials to the schemata whose average fitness remains above average. Although SGA does well in many applications as an optimization method, still it does not guarantee the convergence of a global optimum. Therefore as an alternative scheme, there is a growing interest in a co-evolutionary system, where two populations constantly interact and co-evolve in contrast with traditional single population evolutionary algorithms. In this paper, we propose a new design method of an optimal fuzzy logic controller using co-evolutionary concept. In general, it is very difficult to find optimal fuzzy rules by experience when the input and/or output variables are going to increase. So we propose a co-evolutionary method finding optimal fuzzy rules. Our algorithm is that after constructing two population groups m de up of rule vase and its schema, by co-evolving these two populations, we find optimal fuzzy logic controller. By applying the proposed method to a path planning problem of autonomous mobile robots when moving objects exist, we show the validity of the proposed method.

Development of a Multi-objective function Method Based on Pareto Optimal Point (Pareto 최적점 기반 다목적함수 기법 개발에 관한 연구)

  • It is necessary to develop an efficient optimization technique to optimize the engineering structures which have given design spaces, discrete design values and several design goals. As optimization techniques, direct search method and stochastic search method are widely used in designing of engineering structures. The merit of the direct search method is to search the optimum points rapidly by considering the search direction, step size and convergence limit. And the merit of the stochastic search method is to obtain the global optimum points by spreading point randomly entire the design spaces. In this paper, a Pareto optimal based multi-objective function method (PMOFM) is developed by considering the search direction based on Pareto optimal points, step size, convergence limit and random search generation . The PMOFM can also apply to the single objective function problems, and can consider the discrete design variables such as discrete plate thickness and discrete stiffener spaces. The design results are compared with existing Evolutionary Strategies (ES) method by performing the design of double bottom structures which have discrete plate thickness and discrete stiffener spaces.

Co-evolutionary Genetic Algorithm for Designing and Optimaizing Fuzzy Controller

  • In general, it is very difficult to find optimal fuzzy rules by experience when a system is dynamical and/or complex. Futhermore proper fuzzy partitioning is not deterministic and there is no unique solution. Therefore we propose a new design method of an optimal fuzzy logic controller, that is a co-evolutionary genetic algorithm finding optimal fuzzy rule and proper membership functions at the same time. We formalize the relation between fuzzy rules and membership functions in terms of fitness. We review the typical approaching methods to co-evolutionary genetic algorithms , and then classify them by fitness relation matrix. Applications of the proposed method to a path planning problem of autonomous mobile robots when moving objects exist are presented to demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of the method.

  • It is a classical integer optimization difficulty to design an optimal selection scheme in cooperative relay networks considering co-channel interference (CCI). In this paper, we solve single-objective and multi-objective relay selection problem. For the single-objective relay selection problem, in order to attain optimal system performance of cooperative relay network, a novel quantum differential evolutionary algorithm (QDEA) is proposed to resolve the optimization difficulty of optimal relay selection, and the proposed optimal relay selection scheme is called as optimal relay selection based on quantum differential evolutionary algorithm (QDEA). The proposed QDEA combines the advantages of quantum computing theory and differential evolutionary algorithm (DEA) to improve exploring and exploiting potency of DEA. So QDEA has the capability to find the optimal relay selection scheme in cooperative relay networks. For the multi-objective relay selection problem, we propose a novel non-dominated sorting quantum differential evolutionary algorithm (NSQDEA) to solve the relay selection problem which considers two objectives. Simulation results indicate that the proposed relay selection scheme based on QDEA is superior to other intelligent relay selection schemes based on differential evolutionary algorithm, artificial bee colony optimization and quantum bee colony optimization in terms of convergence speed and accuracy for the single-objective relay selection problem. Meanwhile, the simulation results also show that the proposed relay selection scheme based on NSQDEA has a good performance on multi-objective relay selection.

  • In this paper, we developed an automatic design optimization system for parametric shape optimization of cooling passages inside axial turbine blades. A parallel three-dimensional thermoelasticity finite element analysis code from an open source system was used to perform automatic thermal and stress analysis of different blade configuration. The developed code was connected to an evolutionary optimizer and built in a design optimization system. Using the optimization system, 279 feasible and optimal solutions were searched. It is provided not only one best solution of the searched solutions, but also information of variation structure and correlation of the 279 solutions in function, variable, and real design spaces. To explore design information, it is proposed a new interpretation approach based on evolutionary clustering and principal component analysis. The interpretation approach might be applicable to the increasing demands in the general area of design optimization.

In this paper, Pareto Strategy (PS) multi-objective function method is developed by considering the search direction based on Pareto optimal points, the step size, the convergence limit and the random number generation. The success points between just before and current Pareto optimal points are considered. PS method can also apply to the single objective function problems, and can consider the discrete design variables such as plate thickness, longitudinal space, web height and web space. The optimum design results are compared with existing Random Search (RS) multi-objective function method and Evolutionary Strategy (ES) multi-objective function method by performing the optimum designs of double bottom structure and double hull tanker which have discrete design values. Its superiority and effectiveness are shown by comparing the optimum results with those of RS method and ES method.

These algorithms can be applied, the people who do not have knowledge about the technical tuning of dynamic systems could design the controller or problems in which the characteristics of the system dynamics are slightly varied as time changes.

  • In designing fuzzy models and controllers, we encounter a major difficulty in the identification f an optimized fuzzy rule base, which is traditionally achieved by a tedious trial-and-error process. This paper presents an approach to the evolutionary design of an optimal fuzzy rule base for modeling and control. Evolutionary programming is used to simultaneously evolve the structure and the parameter of fuzzy rule base for a given task. To check the effectiveness of the suggested approach, four numerical examples are examined. The performance of the identified fuzzy rule bases is demonstrated.
