  • In this study, algorithms for analyzing the torsion of buildings under earthquake excitation are developed. The algorithm and formulations to account for the torsional angle are verified by analyzing the seismic acceleration time history data. The method was applied to the reference buildings to examine their operation and usability. The reference application demonstrated that the noise-canceling scheme successfully overcame various obstacles in the field measurements. The developed method is expected to be used as a tool to support a loss assessment system for determining the direction and priority of disaster response in the event of an earthquake.

  • The Baekjae Culture Festival was first held with the objective to re-explore and succeed the traditions of Baekjae culture based on history of Baekjae's seat of government, Gongju and Buyeo. It has contributed to the development of regional culture and establishment of cultural identity of local community with its pride as the leading historical cultural festival that introduces the history and culture of Baekje. However, the current Baekje Culture Festival as a historical and cultural festival is faced with a criticism as it is operated in the direction far from its initial purpose due to the lack of recognition in its significance and application. Therefore, the National Baekje Cultural Products Concours is held as part of various contests of Baekje Culture Festival in order to encourage the pride of Baekje history, draw international attention for the advanced and unique Baekje culture, develop innovative ideas for cultural products and grow the talents in design. The awarded work of this national concours is believed to be effective for the cultural contents industry. However, unlike its initial purpose, the concours has become a one-time exhibitionist event. Hence, through the analysis of general facts and case of domestic cultural products this thesis aims to find a way to utilize the National Baekje Cultural Products Concours in order to re-evaluate the history and culture of Baekje and enhance the public recognition through their viewing, consuming, promoting and experiencing of cultural products.

  • Global or partial damage to a structure due to the failure of gravity or lateral load-bearing elements is called progressive collapse. In the present study, the alternate load path (ALP) method introduced by GSA and UFC 4-023-03 guidelines is used to evaluate the progressive collapse in special steel moment-resisting frame (SMRF) buildings. It was assumed that the progressive collapse is due to the earthquake force and its effects after the removal of the elements still remain on the structures. Therefore, nonlinear dynamic time history analysis employing 7 earthquake records is used to investigate this phenomenon. Internal and external column removal scenarios are investigated and the stiffness of the connections is changed from semi-rigid to rigid. The results of the analysis performed in the OpenSees program show that the loss of the bearing capacity of an exterior column due to a seismic event and the occurrence of progressive collapse can increase the inter-story drift of the structure with semi-rigid connections by more than 50% and make the structure unable to satisfy the life safety performance level. Furthermore, connection stiffness severely affects the redistribution of forces and moments in the adjacent elements of the removed column.

  • Prior studies about nursing home placement identified factors contributing to the risk of institutionalization by pooling adult child caregivers and spousal caregivers together, regardless of differential challenges for the two types of caregivers. In a sample of 456 caregivers followed for a 2 year period, an event history analysis showed that relationship made difference in time to placement and that differential factors led to institutionalization for spousal caregivers and daughter caregivers. Spousal caregivers are more likely to place dementia patients into nursing homes sooner than adult child caregivers. The age of care recipients and role captivity (refers to being unwilling, involuntary incumbent of a caregiver role) are predictors of placement for both groups of caregivers. Dementia patients who were older had a greater risk of institutionalization. Greater feelings of role captivity also shortened the time to placement. Income and education are significant predictors only for caregiving daughters. Daughters who had a high education level are more likely to delay nursing home placement whereas those who had a higher income are more likely to institutionalize their demented parents sooner. Use of day care and behavioral problems are significant predictors only for spousal caregivers. Specifically, use of day care and behavioral problems precipitates nursing home placement. The findings of this study suggest that interventions for helping family members to provide care to the demented elderly at home must consider different circumstances faced by caregiving spouses and caregiving daughters.

  • Multiple earthquakes that occur during short seismic intervals affect the inelastic behavior of the structures. Sequential ground motions against the single earthquake event cause the building structure to face loss in stiffness and its strength. Although, numerous research studies had been conducted in this research area but still significant limitations exist such as: 1) use of traditional design procedure which usually considers single seismic excitation; 2) selecting a seismic excitation data based on earthquake events occurred at another place and time. Therefore, it is important to study the effects of successive ground motions on the framed structures. The objective of this study is to overcome the aforementioned limitations through testing a two storey RC building structural model scaled down to 1/10 ratio through a similitude relation. The scaled model is examined using a shaking table. Thereafter, the experimental model results are validated with simulated results using ETABS software. The test framed specimen is subjected to sequential five artificial and four real-time earthquake motions. Dynamic response history analysis has been conducted to investigate the i) observed response and crack pattern; ii) maximum displacement; iii) residual displacement; iv) Interstorey drift ratio and damage limitation. The results of the study conclude that the low-rise building model has ability to resist successive artificial ground motion from its strength. Sequential artificial ground motions cause the framed structure to displace each storey twice in correlation with vary first artificial seismic vibration. The displacement parameters showed that real-time successive ground motions have a limited impact on the low-rise reinforced concrete model. The finding shows that traditional seismic design EC8 requires to reconsider the traditional design procedure.

  • As a multidisciplinary study encompassing oceanography and history, we have attempted to reanalyze the course of a historical navel battle, Myungryang Naval Battle(September 16th, 1597 according to the lunar calendar) through hindcasting the paleo-tidal currents and -tides(PTC). Firstly, we conducted harmonic analysis using 6-month current data observed at Uldolmok and 1-year elevation data provided by Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute in order to understand their characteristics and to hindcast the PTC. Observation results show that Uldolmok, ~300m wide, relatively narrow channel, is characterized by a flood-dominant mixed mainly semidiurnal tidal regime induced by relatively-strong shallow water constituents, showing closely a standing wave type of tidal current. Further, we hindcasted PTC on the day of Myungryang Naval Battle. Our results were compared and discussed with results(time and speeds of maximum(flood and ebb) currents and high and low water times) of the previous studies estimated from different methods. Lastly, we reconstruct the course of the event of Myungryang Naval Battle recorded in the Admiral Sun-Sin Yi's War Diary(Nangjung Iigi in Korean) based on our hindcasting results.

  • Due to few earthquakes in our country, one generally has thought to be safe from earthquakes. However, severe earthquakes occurred in Dangsan and Hyogohyeon which one had regarded as the zone that had not been risky for earthquakes, so that so many people died and a lot of buildings and bridges were destroyed. This event surprised our country and we undertook preparation for earthquakes on the full scale. The concept of seismic design was induced in the country which was poor in it for the scarcity of recognition and insufficiency of funds. Recently, many specialists are enforcing the provisions of seismic design. Therefore, this study introduces the method which combines PC-LEADeR( design program for L.R.B.) with LUSAS(linear elastic analysis) and performs the seismic isolation design more elaborately and simply. It verifies the propriety of that method, and it also examine the factors that affect the response of the bridges. Seismic isolation design for bridge using L.R.B. provides both economical efficiency and superior seismic performance. Second, the results between by the method proposed and by time history analysis have 20% error at the maximum. That is, the method proposed very appropriate.

  • Today, information technologies have been applied to operations in container terminals, and it is possible to collect operational log data due to development of equipment and operations technology. Terminal operators are collecting event log data and try to figure out the way of resolving operations problems. Operators want to analyze event logs to determine the causes of the operation problems, but it can hardly be done manually. In this paper, we suggest a formal framework to evaluate performance measures using the collected log data of operations in container terminals. The proposed formal framework supports different container terminal layout, operational processes, and equipment. Our formal framework is composed of specification of terminal layout, log data, workflow, statistics, and report, based on the concept of container handling objects. For validation of our framework, we have implemented a terminal performance analysis system based on the proposed framework.

  • The dynamic vehicle running tests were performed to analyze dynamic behavioral characteristics such as displacement, strain history loop and vibration acceleration in arch bridges. Also, the validity of the modeling was verified by comparing the results of the tests and those of the structural analysis modeling. With the resonance revision of verified modeling, when the ratio of excited frequencies to natural frequencies exceeds ${1{\pm}0.04}$, the stability of the bridge is obtained. Also, in the event of resonance by speed parameter, the second mode shape is dominant to the dynamic behaviors of arch bridges. It is found that manipulating the parameters involving arch ribs can increase the second mode natural frequency. It makes critical velocity greater than operational velocities to guarantee the stability of arch bridges.
