In this study, a series of survey were conducted to identify the distribution patterns of macrobenthos at the Bongam sand tidal flat in Masan Bay. We collected macrobenthos at 9 sampling sites twice in June and September of every year from 2012 to 2017 using a box core sampler (collecting area, $0.025m^2$). There was a total of 50 species with a community density of $6,388ind.m^{-2}$ and a biomass of $313.9g\;wet\;m^{-2}$ during the study period. Polychaetes had the highest number of species and density among the macrofauna, but the mollusks had the largest biomass. The number of species ranged from 10 to 25 during study period but increased to over 20 species in 2014. The density which ranged from $1,508ind.m^{-2}$ to $12,008ind.m^{-2}$ rapidly increased in 2015. The dominant species were all polychaetes such as Heteromastus filiformis, Prionospio japonicus, Hediste diadroma, and Neanthes succinea. The mean diversity index ranged from 1.2 to 1.9, richness index from 1.2 to 2.4, and evenness index from 0.5 to 0.9. From the cluster analysis results, there was a spatial difference in the similarity of faunal composition of macrobenthos and this pattern was maintained throughout the study period, that is, the temporal similarities were higher than the spatial similarities. There was a change in community composition from June 2014 to June 2015 in most of the sampling sites. During this time, the dominant species also changed from H. filiformis and N. succinea to H. filiformis and H. diadroma. The density of opportunistic species such as Capitella capitata and Polydora ligni decreased compared to the early 2000s while the population of H. diadroma increased from 2015. There was little ecological information on H. diadroma such as when and where this species occurred.
The variation of fish community by reduced amount of water in the Cheonggye Stream was investigation from April to October 2018. Water depth decreased by 10~50 cm according to the stations, compared with 2011, before the amount of water decreased. Twelve species of five families appeared during the survey period. Short barbel gudgeon and Zacco koreanus belonging to the Korean endemic species such appeared in the stations. Seven species of Rhodeus uyekii, Acheilognathus yamatsutae, Acheilognathus gracilis, Hemibarbus labeo, Abbottina rivularis, Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis, and Erythroculter erythropterus did not appear in 2018. After the decreased amount water, the fish species which increased rapidly was Zacco platypus and increased to 24.9% in the relative abundance of fishes. Dominant species of each station were Acheilognathus yamatsutae (St. 4) and Zacco platypus (St. 1, 2, 2). Results to water quality tolerance guild analysis of fish, number of species belonging to sensitive species decreased from 34.0% to 8.5%, there was no significant difference inter-mediate species, and tolerance species increased from 50.2% to 75.5%. Insectivore species sharply decreased from 48.1% to 19.2%, there was no significant difference carnivore and herbivore, and omnivore rapidly increased from 51.6% to 80.7%. Dominant index 0.76 from 0.62 to increased, diversity index 1.80 from 1.33 to reduced, evenness index 0.57 from 0.42 to reduced, and richness index 3.02 from 2.90 to decreased.
Herbivory is a major functional component of forest ecosystems, and herbivorous insects comprise about 25% of all insect species. Increasing plant diversity is related to herbivore abundance and diversity, which affects the level of leaf damage caused by insects. This study was conducted to identify plant-related variables such as plant diversity and number of leaves and density-related variables, basal area, and diameter at breast height (DBH) in a temperate forest of southern South Korea. To assess the level of leaf damage caused by leaf chewing insects, we set up two 0.1 ha plots in a temperate deciduous forest on Mt. Jirisan National Park. Plant richness differed between two sites: 16 species in 14 families(site 1) and 19 species in 15 families (site 2). Fisher's alpha index based on plant species richness and abundance resulted in 4.41 (site 1) and 6.57 (site 2). However, the sum of basal area of each site was higher in site 1 ($6.6m^2$) than site 2 ($3.7m^2$). The total surveyed leaves at two sites were 3,832 and 4,691, respectively and the damage leaves were 1,544 and 2,136, respectively. The mean leaf damage level was 11.2% (${\pm}1.76%$) in two study sites: the leaf damage level of the site 1 (11.99%) was significantly higher than site 2 (10.59%). Stepwise regression analysis showed that species diversity and evenness were the significant variables for leaf damages by chewing herbivores. NMDS ordination also identified that high tree density and low species diversity were the significant variables. This suggested that the level of damage was significantly higher in plots with low plant diversity and high tree density. In the future, we will investigate other guilds of herbivores such as sap-suckers, miners and gallers in temperate deciduous forests.

A seasonal characteristic of fish assemblages in the coastal waters of Gapa-do was determined using samples collected by a trammel net from 2015 to 2019. Annual mean temperature and salinity were 18.9℃, 33.6 psu (2015), 19.5℃, 33.6 psu (2016), 18.9℃, 33.8 psu (2017), 18.8℃, 34.5 psu (2018) and 19.5℃, 33.7 psu (2019), which show a stable water mass. During the survey period, a total of 50 species (30 families and 8 orders) of fishes were identified, including Scorpaeniformes (3 families and 9 species) and Perciformes (18 families and 29 species) that accounted for 68% of the total number. The number of species was higher in summer than in winter, showing the peak in the summer by 35 species and the low in the winter by 20 species. The number of individuals and the biomass peaked in the summer by 690 individuals and 151.4 kg, and were the lowest in the autumn by 336 individuals and 76.6 kg. The annual diversity index, evenness index and richness index were appeared to be 2.54-2.75, 0.68-0.76 and 5.32-6.65 at each stations. The dominance index was appeared to be the highest in 2018 and the lowest in 2015. Marbled rockfish (Sebastiscus marmoratus), rock fish (Sebastes inermis), filefish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer), rabbit fish (Siganus fuscescens), porcupine fish (Diodon holocanthus) and smallscale blackfish (Girella melanichthys) were dominant species, which occurred abundantly during the entire survey period. Subtropical fishes were identified as a total of 24 species (48.0%) and the number of species was higher in 2019 by 20 (60.6%) species and lower in 2015 by 13 (44.8%) species. The dominant species of the subtropical fishes were appeared to be rabbit fish, porcupine fish, smallscale blackfish, flag fish (Goniistius zonatus), stripey (Microcanthus strigatus), grunter (Parapristipoma trilineatum), and bluestriped angelfish (Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis) at the study sites.

This study was conducted to investigate the fish fauna and characteristics of the Carassius auratus population in the Boryeong Reservoir in Chungcheongnam-do from October 2017 to June 2018. The collected fish were identified as 3,506 individuals of 15 species from a total of nine families. The dominant and subdominant species were H. nipponensis with 1,706 (48.6%) individuals and C. auratus with 1,021 (29.1%) individuals, respectively. The biomass of C. auratus (246,130g), P. fulvidraco(50,610g), C. cuvieri (14,730 g), S. asotus (11,560 g), and C. carpio (10,930 g) was analyzed. The results of the community analysis showed a dominant index value of 0.87 (±0.2), a diversity index value of 0.78 (±0.5), an evenness index value of 0.47 (±0.2), and a richness index value of 0.99 (±0.5). The length-weight analysis of C. auratus showed a regression coefficient b of 3.06, and a condition factor (K) of 0.0004 with a positive slope. The frequency distribution of the total length analysis of the C. auratus population inhabiting the Boryeong Reservoir showed a high distribution of lengths between 140-160 mm and a low distribution between 230-280 mm. The normalized difference water index (NDWI) was analyzed over the Boryeong Reservoir water surface from 2013 to 2014 using Landsat 8 channel data. The areas where the NDWI was decreased were located at the inflow site of Ungcheon Stream.
In this study, nine major sites of Yulcheon stream, a principal tributary of the Seomjingang River, were surveyed from April 2020 to October 2020, and their fish fauna and community structure were analyzed. A total of five families and 19 species of fish were identified. Among the 19 species, seven species were found to be endemic to Korea: Rhodeus uyekii, Squalidus gracilis majimae, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Odontobutis interrupta, Cobitis tetralineata, Zacco koreanus, and Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae. Among five families, the family Cyprinidae had the largest number of species (15), whereas the rest of the four families: Gobiidae, Odontobutidae, Cobitidae, and Osphronemidae, had one species each. The two dominant species in the family Cyprinidae were identified as Z. platypus and Z. temminckii. The community index of nine major sites of Yulcheon stream was 0.499 dominance, 2.279 diversity, 0.774 evenness, and 2.594 species richness. The number 3 site had 14 species, the largest number of species among all sites, and the dominance rate (0.480) was low, whereas diversity (2.173), and species richness (2.701) were the highest. As a result of cluster analysis, clusters matched according to the structure of the river types, but St. 9, which confirmed a relatively small number of populations, showed a structure similar to that of the upstream section. In the case of St. 5, a separate cluster was formed by a large number of species and populations.
The objective of this study was to examine vegetation community structure and distribution of Fraxinus chiisanensis in Mt.Minjuji of Chungcheongbuk-do by setting up and surveying 8 plots (400 m2 each). Mean Importance Value (MIV) of Fraxinus chiisanensis in 8 plots was 35.19% in average (ranging from 26.07~42.74%). Since it is the dominant species in all plots, it is expected to maintain the present vegetation structure. The analysis of the DBH (diameter at breast height) showed that the diameter of Fraxinus chiisanensis in Mt.Minjuji ranges from 2 to 43cm. The majority of Fraxinus chiisanensis is expected to maintain current state unless disturbance or rapid environmental change occurs. The Species Diversity (H') was 0.8498~1.0261, Evenness (J') was 0.8160~0.9256, Dominance Index (D) was 0.0789~0.1840, Maximum Diversity (H'max) was 1.0414~1.2041. The analysis of annual ring and radial growth showed that the average age of Fraxinus chiisanensis in Mt.Minjuji was 29.1years(ranging from 22~58years). The average annual radial growth of Fraxinus chiisanensis was the highest in community G with 5.84mm and the lowest in community B with 2.80mm. The similarity index analysis revealed that the similarity index between community B and E, C and F, H was the highest with 69.0%, and the similarity index between community E and F was the lowest with 29.6%. Both the area of Fraxinus chiisanensis community of Mt.Minjuji and its population size are very small. Therefore, this area needs to be designated as Forest Genetic Resource Reserve.

This study was conducted to investigate the species composition collected by fyke net and characteristics of the Erythroculter erythropterus population in the Asan Lake and Chungju Lake from June to September, 2021. The collected fish in Asan lake were identified as 4,977 individuals of 13 species from a total of six families and in Chungju lake were identified as 2,436 individuals of 18 species from a total of eight families. The dominant species in Asan lake, both the individuals and biomass were E. erythropterus with 4,470 (89.8%) and 498,424g (84.5%). The dominant species in Chungju lake, both the individuals and biomass were E. erythropterus with 1,327 (54.5%) and 301,818 g (77.5%). The results of the community analysis showed that a dominant index value of Asan lake was 0.93, higher than 0.71 of Chungju lake, and a diversity, evenness, and richness index value of Chungju lake were higher than of Asan lake. The frequency distribution of the total length analysis of the E. erythropterus population showed the appearance rate of 1~2 year olds was high in Asan lake, and the appearance rate of more than 2 years old were high in Chungju lake. The length-weight analysis of E. erythropterus in Asan Lake and Chungju Lake showed a regression coefficient b of 3.06 and 3.04, a condition factor (K) of 0.000128 and 0.000051 with a positive slope. This study could be served as baseline data for assessing habitat characteristics based on the species composition of fishes, and identifying health conditions of E. erythropterus in Asan Lake and Chungju Lake, artificial lakes.
This study was conducted to investigate the taxonomic composition and diversity of fecal microbiota between birth and weaning stages of Halla horses using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing analysis. Proteobacteria (35.7%) and Firmicutes (45.6%) were identified as the most common phylum in birth and weaning, respectively. Escherichia (19.7%) and Clostridium (14.0%) were observed as the most dominant genus in birth, and Fibrobacter (6.6%) was the highest in weaning. The results of α-diversity showed that the richness and evenness in microbial communities were statistically significant (p<0.001) in birth and weaning. The results of β-diversity indicated that the birth and weaning stages were clearly divided into two groups at the genus and species levels. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) showed that the microbiota composition differences between birth and weaning were statistically significant (q<0.001). A linear discriminant analysis effect (LEfSe) was performed to select taxonomic makers between the birth and weaning stages. On the genus level, Escherichia, Bacteroides, Clostridium, and Methylobacterium were relatively abundant at birth, whereas Fibrobacter was more abundant at weaning. We expect that this research can be utilized as basic data in the identification of microbial communities involved in disease prevention and nutrient absorption in Halla horses.
Yokjido is a 15-km2 inhabited island located at the tip of the southeastern coast of the Korean Peninsula. Its forest is mostly composed of substitutional vegetation. Our aim was to provide basic information necessary for the conservation and management of the forest vegetation in Yokjido. We classified the types of existing vegetation using methods of the Zurich-Montpellier school of phytosociology. The resulting vegetation map shows the dominant tree species in the top canopy-layer. A total of 8 vegetation types were identified, which were arranged into a vegetation unit hierarchy of 2 communities, 4 sub-communities, 6 variants, and 2 subvariants. Evaluations of each type showed large and small differences in floristic composition, which reflect anthropogenic influences, site conditions, succession stages, and the establishment period. Moreover, vegetation types differed significantly in terms of species diversity indices; in particular, overall species richness, species diversity, and species evenness tended to increase significantly as the elevation increased. The herbaceous plant species showed the highest positive (+) correlation to x. These results were consistent with those of McCain, who reported that species diversity increases in mountainous areas with relatively low elevations due to the mid-domain effect. The forest succession in Yokjido will potentially enter a mixed-forest stage and then proceed to become an all-evergreen broad-leaved forest.
