  • A fundamental study was carried out to develop a process for recycling tungsten and cobalt from WC-Co hardmetal sludge generated in the manufacturing process of hardmetal tools. The complete extraction of cobalt and simultaneous formation of tungstic was achieved by treating the sludge using aqua regia. The effect of aqua regia concentration, reaction temperature and time, pulp density on cobalt leaching and tungstic acid formation was investigated. The complete leaching of cobalt was attained at the optimum conditions: 100 vol.% aqua regia concentration, $100^{\circ}C$ temperature, 60 min. reaction time and 400 g/L pulp density. A complete conversion of tungsten carbide of the sludge to tungstic acid was however, obtained at the pulp densities lower than 150 g/L under the above condition. The progress of reaction during the aqua regia treatment of the sludge was monitored through the XRD phase identification of the residue. The metallic impurities in the tungstic acid so produced could be further removed as insoluble residues by dissolving the tungsten values in ammonia solution. The ammonium paratungstate($(NH_4)_{10}{\cdot}H_2W_{12}O_{42}{\cdot}4H_2O$) of 99.85% purity was prepared from the ammonium polytungstate solution by the evaporation crystallization method.

  • In Korea, groundwater is main water source in livestock farms. Most dairy and cattle farms have constructed their own wells for human drinking and livestock farming. However, these private residential wells have not been controlled by government and also there was scant study about livestock drinking water quality. Therefore this study was to monitor of the livestock farms' groundwater quality in Korea. Water samples were collected at 123 dairy and cattle farms and were analysed forty six substances with quality standard for drinking water approved by the Minister of Environment. Seventy eight (63.4%) of 123 samples failed to drinking water stand a test. The most frequent contaminants were nitrate-nitrogen and microbial. 22.8% (n=28) of samples showed nitrate-N concentration of higher than 10 mg/L meant that can't be used drinking water for human and the Nitrate-N concentration analysed in the range of 0.2 to 61.2 mg/L. All of 78 failed to drinking samples had microbial problems, especially 5.7% (n=7) of samples indicated water could be contaminated by feces. Other contaminants detected were zinc and evaporation residue. Especially detected zinc concentration (32 mg/L) was about ten times higher than standard of zinc (3 mg/L). Regression analysis indicated that groundwater pH did not influence to nitrate-N concentration but the hardness and chloride could affect to nitrate-N concentration in the groundwater. Most livestock farms were adjacent to crop farmland in Korea. This could cause contamination of groundwater with nitrate-N and pesticide that could accumulate livestock product. Moreover Heavy metal such as zinc and copper could be released from a corrosive plated water pipe in livestock farm. Put together, Korea livestock system is indoor, not pasture-based, hence livestock could be exposed to potential contaminated water consistently. Therefore on the basis of these data, appropriate livestock drinking water quality standards should be prepared to keep livestock healthy and their product safe. Further, livestock drinking water quality should be monitored continuously in suitable livestock drinking water standards.

  • The residue after hot water extraction of blue crab, Portunus trituberculata, was hydrolyzed for utilizing the byproducts as seasonings. The acid(5N HCl) hydrolyzates were then neutralized with $Na_2CO_3$, 5N NaOH or 5N NaOH hydrolyzate, while the alkali hydrolyzates (5N NaOH) were also neutralized with 5N HCl or 5N HCl hydrolyzate. The total nitrogen and formol nitrogen contents increased, and the platability of the hydrolyzates was also enhanced by neutralization. The released amino acid contents from the neutralized hydrolyzates with $Na_2CO_3$, 5N NaOH and 5N NaOH hydrolyzate were $2,274mg\%,\;2,105.0mg\%$ and $2,683.5mg\%$, respectively. Amino acid contents from the neutralized hydrolyzates with 5N HCl and 5N HCl hydrolyzate were $1,352.5mg\%$ and $2,498.8mg\%$, respectively. In the decolorization of hydrolyzates using decolorization agent, powdered active carbon showed good decolorizing effect. Powdered active carbon decreased total nitrogen and formol nitrogen contents in direct relationship to the increase in its concentration. The effective concentration of active carbon used as decolorization agent showed as $1\~2\%$ of the crab hydrolyzate. Salt contents could be decreased at 37 brix by desalination method such as the evaporation of the hydrolyzate contents.

  • In this study, required properties and optimized procedure conditions for the pitch based soft carbon anode of lithium ion battery was investigated for improving the initial efficiency and rate performance. Each petroleum residue was thermally treated at 360, 370, and $410^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours to synthesis a pitch and the corresponding pitch shows the softening point of 86, 98, and $152^{\circ}C$, respectively. The elemental analysis and thermal characteristics of the pitch were investigated by EA analysis and TGA. It was noted that the low H/C and improved thermal stability were obtained with the high softening point. The obtained pitch was carbonized at $1,200^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour to produce a soft carbon based anode. As a result of investigating the crystal structure by XRD analysis, it was found that the crystallinity of soft carbon increased with increasing the softening point. It was considered that relatively higher boiling components and decreases in the evaporation component resulted the components participation for cyclization during the heat treatment process. The soft carbon based anode with an improved crystallinity shows the enhanced initial efficiency and rate performance. The mechanism of both improvements was also discusssed based on the developed crystal structure of soft carbon based anode materials.
