Bentonite is widely recognized and utilized as a buffer material in high-level radioactive waste repositories, mainly due to its favorable characteristics such as swelling capability and low permeability. Bentonite buffers play an important role in ensuring the safe disposal of radioactive waste by providing a low permeability barrier and effectively preventing the migration of radionuclides into the surrounding rock. However, the long-term performance of bentonite buffers still remains a subject of ongoing research, and one of the main concerns is the erosion of the buffer induced by swelling and groundwater flow. The erosion of the bentonite buffer can significantly impact repository safety by compromising the integrity of buffer and leading to the formation of colloids that may facilitate the transport of radionuclides through groundwater, consequently elevating the risk of radionuclide migration. Therefore, it is very important to numerically quantify the erosion of bentonite buffer to evaluate the long-term performance of bentonite buffer, which is crucial for the safety assessment of high-level radioactive waste disposal. In this technical note, Two-region model is introduced, a proposed model to simulate the erosion behavior of bentonite based on a dynamic bentonite diffusion model, and quantitative evaluation is conducted for the bentonite buffer erosion with this model.

The purpose of this study was to develop a dietary life education program for adolescents and evaluate its effectiveness. The program was divided into three areas: 'Natam' (taste education), 'Wetam' (traditional dietary life education), and 'Gitam' (sustainable dietary life education), consisting of a total of 10 units primarily focused on cooking activities. For participants aged 14~17 years, face-to-face pilot education was conducted by a trained instructor once a week for 10 weeks. A questionnaire survey was performed to evaluate the educational effect(n=72) and satisfaction(n=82) during education period. Significant improvements were observed in knowledge levels for the 'traditional dietary life education', and 'sustainable dietary life education' which were identified as insufficient in the preliminary survey. Attitude and behavior levels were significantly improved across all areas. Satisfaction was high with a score of 4 out of 5 points for all areas. In conclusion, this program was found to be effective, and further emphasis should be placed on traditional and sustainable dietary life education to enhance its impact.

Monitoring technology based on electrical resistivity is widely used for non-destructive data collection and health analysis of underground structures and tunnels. Vulnerable sections such as fault zone generates many problems during construction of the tunnel. These problems cause displacement and stress changes of the ground. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the state of the fault zone section to ensure the mechanical stability of the underground structure. Monitoring the size of joints and the porosity of the fillings is essential for rocks. Previous studies have not considered the variety of fillings in rock joints. In this study, electrical resistivity tests were conducted according to the particle mixing state of the sandy fillings. When the size of fillings is decreased at the constant porosity, the electrical resistivity tends to increase. The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic electrical resistivity data for predicting the ground conditions and evaluation of the ground behavior that is containing sandy fillings in the rock joint for tunnels.

In this study, the results of the elasto-plastic beam analysis, finite element analysis and optimization design of the steel pipe sheet pile applied as an earth retaining wall under the deep excavation were presented. Through this study, it was found that the high-strength and sea resistant steel pipe has high allowable stress, excellent structural properties, favorable corrosion, and high utilization as an earth retaining wall, and the C-Y type joint has significantly improved the tensile strength and stiffness compared to the traditional P-P type. In addition, it was investigated that even if the leak or defect of the wall occurs during construction, it has the advantage of being able to be repaired reliably through welding and overlapping. In the case of steel pipe wall, they were evaluated as the best in views of the deep excavation due to the large allowable bending stress and deformation flexibility for the same horizontal displacement than CIP or slurry wall. Elasto-plastic and finite element analysis were conducted in consideration of ground excavation under large-scale earth pressure (uneven pressure), and the results were compared with each other. Quantitative maximum value were found to be similar between the two methods for each item, such as excavation behavior, wall displacement, or member force, and both analysis method were found to be applicable in design for steel pipe sheet pile wall. Finally, it was found that economical design was possible when determining the thinnest filling method with concrete rather than the thickest hollow shape in the same diameter, and the depth (the embedded length through normality evaluation) without rapidly change in displacement and member force.
The thin-layered sand seam in clay affects the soil behavior. Although the standard cone penetrometer (A: $10cm^2$) have been used to evaluate the thin-layered soil, the smaller diameter cone penetrometer have been commonly recommended because of the high resolution. The purpose of this study is the development and application of the Cone Resistivity Penetrometer (CRP), which detects qc, fs, and electrical resistivity at cone tip for the evaluation of thin layered soils. Two sizes of the CRP are developed for the laboratory and field test. The projected areas of CRP for the laboratory and field tests are $0.78cm^2$ (d: 1.0 cm) and $1.76cm^2$ (d: 1.5 cm), repectively. The length of friction sleeve is designed in consideration of ratio of the projected area to the friction sleeve area. The application tests are carried out by using the artificially prepared thin-layered soils in the laboratory. In addition, the field tests are conducted at the depth of 6 to 15 m in Kwangyang. In the laboratory test, the measured electrical resistivity and cone tip resistance detect the soil layers. Moreover, in the field test the CRP investigates the three thin-layered soils. This study suggests that the CRP may be a useful tool for detecting thin-layered in soft soils.
Recently, there have been many construction projects on soft ground with growth of industry and various construction problems concerning soft soil behavior also have been reported. Especially, foundation piles of abutments and (or) buildings which were constructed on the soft ground have been suffering from a lot of stability problems of inordinary displacement due to lateral flow of soft ground. Although many researches for this phenomena have been carried out, it is still difficult to assess the mechanism of lateral flow on soft ground quantitatively. And reliable design method for judgement of lateral flow occurrence is not established yet. In this study, PNN (probabilistic neural network) and CNN (committee neural network) theories were applied for judgment of lateral flow occurrence based on eat data compiled from Korea and Japan. Predictions of PNN and CNN models for new data which were not used during model development are compared with those predicted by conventional empirical methods. It was found that the developed PNN and CNN models can predict more precise and reliable judgment of lateral flow occurrence than conventional empirical methods.
A new hybrid oedometer cell is designed and manufactured to investigate a behavior of soft soils by using elastic and electromagnetic waves during consolidation test. Bender elements, which generate and detect shear waves, are placed in the top cap and the bottom plate and mounted on the oedometer wall. Double wedge type electrical resistance probe, which measures local void ratio change, is positioned onto the top cap of the oedometer cell. The bender elements and the electrical resistance probe are anchored into a nylon set screw with epoxy resin. The nylon set screw with epoxy resin minimizes directly transmited elastic waves through the oedometer cell due to impedence mismatch and allows for easy replacement of defected bender elements and electrical resistance probe. Primary consolidation time can be estimated from the slope of electrical resistance versus log time curve and the evolution of shear wave velocity. The shear wave velocity can be used to assess inherent anisotropy when disturbance effects are minimized because particle alignment affects the shear wave velocity. The void ratios evaluated by the electrical resistance probe are similar to those by the settlement during consolidation. This study suggests that the shear wave velocity and the electrical resistance can provide complementary imformations to understand consolidation characteristics such as primary consolidation, anisotropy, and void ratio.
It is important to calculate the natural frequency of a piled structure in the design stage in order to prevent resonance-induced damage to the pile foundation and analyze the dynamic behavior of the piled structure during an earthquake. In this paper, a simple but relatively accurate method employing a mass-spring model is presented for the evaluation of the natural frequency of a pile-soil system. Greatly influencing the calculation of the natural frequency of a piled structure, the spring stiffness between a pile and soil was evaluated by using the coefficient of subgrade reaction, the p-y curve, and the subsoil elastic modulus. The resulting natural frequencies were compared with those of 1-g shaking table tests. The comparison showed that the natural frequency of the pile-soil system could be most accurately calculated by constructing a stiffness matrix with the spring stiffness of the Reese (1974) method, which utilizes the coefficient of the subgrade reaction modulus, and Yang's (2009) dynamic p-y backbone curve method. The calculated natural frequencies were within 5% error compared with those of the shaking table tests for the pile system in dry dense sand deposits and 5% to 40% error for the pile system in saturated sand deposits depending on the occurrence of excess pore water pressure in the soil.
One-dimensional site response analysis is widely used to simulate the seismic site effects. The equivalent linear analysis, which is the most widely used type of site response analysis, is essentially a linear method. The method applies constant shear modulus and damping throughout the frequency range of the input motion, ignoring the dependence of the soil response on the loading frequency. A new type of equivalent linear analysis method that can simulate the frequency dependence of the soil behavior via frequency-strain curve was developed. Various forms of frequency-strain curves were proposed, and all curves were asserted to increase the accuracy of the solution. However, its validity has not been extensively proven and the effect of the shape of the frequency-strain curve is not known. This paper used two previously proposed frequency-strain curves and three additional curves developed in this study to evaluate the accuracy of the frequency-dependent equivalent linear method and the influence of the shape of the frequency-strain curves. In the evaluation, six recordings from three case histories were used. The results of the case study indicated that the shape of the frequency-strain curve has a dominant influence on the calculated response, and that the frequency dependent analysis can enhance the accuracy of the solution. However, a curve that results in the best match for all case histories did not exist and the optimum curve varied for each case. Since the optimum frequency-strain curve can not be defined, it is recommended that a suite of curves be used in the analysis.
The intelligent product is a product in which interactive technologies are applied to an existing common product, called a mother product. This study focuses on interaction design of a hedonic intelligent product and investigates an efficient method of input control of hedonic intelligent products. The hedonic intelligent product is a product in which the hedonic attributes such as play and pleasure are added to the mother product. Utilitarian intelligent products enhance practical functions of mother products. The utilitarian intelligent product finds user behavior in the mother product to improve functional elements for a user experience design. On the other hand, hedonic intelligent products find various emotional values that impart hedonistic attributes and apply them to design. The input method studied through the case study is classified into the imitation input method and the transformation input method derived from the mother product. Based on this, two independent variables of intelligent pinwheels were designed, and its usability evaluation was conducted under the same output condition to investigate a more effective input method. As a result, the transformation input method was rated higher in originality than the imitation input method. This result implies that users had new experiences from the transformation input method, which leads to a higher intention of paying for new experiences.
