  • A series of novel 1,3-alternate calix[4]-mono-thiacrown and -bis-thiacrowns were synhesized within good yields. The three dimensional 1,3-alternate conformation was confimed by X-ray crystal structure. From the results of two phase extraction and NMR studies on the ligand-metal complex, one can conclude that the calix[4]thiacrown ethers showed the very high selectivity for silver ion over other metal ions by an electrostatic interaction between sulfur atom and silver ion and by a $\pi-metal$ complexation.

  • 1,3-Dipropyloxycalix[4]arene dibenzocrown ethers were synthesized in the fixed 1,3-alternate conformation by the reaction of 1,3-dipropyloxycalix[4]arenes with a dibenzo dimesylates. Complexation toward alkali metal ions using ISEs showed a high cesium selectivity. Conformational flexibility of the corresponding 1,3-alternate calixcrown ether (4) with respect to the NMR time scale is found to depend on the temperature and polarity of the NMR solvent.

  • Fatty alcohol ethers, nonionic surfactants which are used as general purpose emulsifiers were separated by use of water-modified carbon dioxide mobile phase in capillary supercritical fluid chromatography. Much greater peak intensities and improved separation were observed in the chromatogram with on-line modified mobile phase than with pure CO2. A simple method for the preparation of on-line modified mobile phase is also introduced.

  • The synthesis of various cyclic carbamate compounds and amino alcohols has attracted attention in the past because of their potential as antibiotics, antitumor, analgenics, anticonvulsants. Several methods for the preparation of cyclic carbamate compounds have previously been reported including the use of heterocumulenes. We have recently described the novel synthetic method for N-protected amines from various ethers using Chlorosulfonyl isocyanate(CSI) and found that the mechanism of our CSI reaction is a competitive reaction of $S_N1$ and $S_ Ni$ mechanisms according to the stability of carbocation intermediates. • The development of metal catalysts that can polymerize or copolymerize "polar" $Ch_2=CHX$ monomers by insertion mechanisms would significantly expand the scope of metal-catalyzed polymerization and enable the synthesis of new materials with enhanced properties. We have studied the reactions of single-site olefin polymerization catalysts with vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, and vinyl ethers, in order to probe monomer coordination trends, insertion rates and regioselectivity, and the structures and reactivity of metal alkyls that contain functional groups on the alpha and beta positions of the alkyl chain. These studies provide insights to the key issues that underlie the "polar monomer" problem. Copolymerization of olefins and selected vinyl ethers has been achieved.

  • An analytical method of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in soil samples by isotope dilution method using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS)-selected ion monitoring (SIM) was described. PBDEs in soil were extracted with soxhlet extractor and then silica and florisil solid phase extraction (SPE) methods as purification of extract were compared. After clean-up, the extractions were analyzed by GC/MS with SIM mode. Quantitation was performed isotope dilution method using four $^{13}C$ isotopically labeled PBDEs as internal standards. This developed method was validated for eight congeners of PBDEs in the concentration range 0.04~4 ng/g in soil and the average recovery of the analytes ranged 30.8~110.8% for florisil and 44.4~110.7% for silica, respectively. The method detection limits of PBDEs were 0.04~0.3 ng/g.

  • A 3D-CoMFA model with pranlukast analogues was constructed, which could be applied to predict the antagonistic activity of aryl benzyl ether analogues against LTD4. Molecular modeling and 3D-CoMFA studies were performed on 78 pranlukast analogues and 14 aryl benzyl ethers to evaluate the antagonistic behavior of aryl benzyl ethers and provide information for further modification of this kind of compounds. The aryl benzyl ether core was found to be in excellent three dimensional match with the central planar moiety of pranlukast analogues, and the pranlukast 3D-CoMFA model could be successfully applied to predict the biological activity of aryl benzyl ether analogues.

  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) as flame-retardant additives have been used in a wide array of products, including building materials, electronics, furnishings, motor vehicles, airplanes, plastics, polyurethane foams, and textiles. They are structurally similar to PCBs and other polyhalogenated compounds. PBDEs are found in a variety of foods, and 95% of all human exposure to POPs comes from food. The major food sources are fish/seafood and dairy products. A number of studies have reported high levels of PBDEs in animals, increasing the public's concern over PBDE levels in animals. This study evaluates the relationship between the level of PBDEs according to piglet diseases. Salmonella spp. and Streptococcus are bacterial diseases. Porcine respiratory reproductive syndrome (PRRS) is a viral disease. The concentration of PBDEs in the piglet liver from viral diseases was higher than that from bacterial diseases. BDE-47 and BDE-99 were detected in most samples. More PBDEs were detected in the piglet liver from PRRS of North American type than from that of European type.
