This study was conducted to investigate the effect of 70% ethanol and water extract of Korean rough rice ('Ilpum', 'Goami2', 'Keunnun', 'Sulgaeng', 'Baegjinju', and 'Heugkwang') before and after germination on proliferation of human cancer cell lines (HepG2, PC-3, and MCF-7). Antiproliferation effect was higher in ethanol extract than water extract, and was higher in after germination. 'Ilpum' ethanol extract after germination showed higher anti-proliferation effect on HepG2 and PC-3 cell lines than before germination. The cell viability on HepG2 and PC-3 cell lines of 'Ilpum' ethanol extract after germination was 27.23% and 5.05% at 1.0 mg/mL, respectively. The anti-proliferation effect on MCF-7 was the highest in 'Ilpum' and 'Heugkwang' 70% ethanol extract after germination and those cell viabilities were 7.27% and 17.00% at 0.5 mg/mL, respectively. These results suggest that germinated rough rice might have a potentially preventive effect on human cancer cells.

This study was performed to develop high-value-added biomaterials for health and beauty products. Extracts of ethanol and hot water and their subsequent organic solvent fractions were prepared from Lees of Wookukseng (LW), a commercialized Korean traditional rice wine. We investigated their activities on blood coagulation, platelet aggregation, hemolysis against human red blood cells (hRBCs), and anti-oxidation. The water content, pH and brix of the LW were 80.3%, 3.94 and 13.0°, respectively. The yield of ethanol extraction (6.62%) was 3.15 times higher than that of hot-water extraction (2.1%), and the ethyacetate fraction (EAF) of ethanol extract showed the highest content of total polyphenol (128 mg/g) among the various fractions. In anticoagulation activity assay, the EAF of ethanol extract showed a 15-fold extension in TT, PT, and aPTT, indicating that the EAFs contain various inhibitory substances against thrombin, prothrombin and coagulation factors. In anti-platelet aggregation activity assay, the butanol fraction and water residue of ethanol extract showed significant inhibition activity. The activities were comparable to aspirin, a commercial anti-thrombosis agent. The above extracts and fractions did not show hemolysis activity against hRBC up to 5 mg/ml, and had radical scavenging activity against DPPH anion, ABTS cation and nitrite. Our results suggest that the active fractions prepared from LW, which has no specific usage until now, have a high potential as novel resources for anti-thrombosis agents.
Objectives : The cosmeceutical activity of Cuacuta japonica Choisy were investigated for cosmetics industrial application. Methods : Cosmeceutical activities include antioxidant, tyrosinase inhibition effects and nitrite-scavenging ability were examined through the Cuacuta japonica Choisy Results : The result were obtained as follows : The electron donating ability of water and ethanol extract was 69.5%, 78.3% at 1,000ppm. In SOD-like activity, water extract showed low effect, but ethanol extract scored 63.4% at 1,000ppm. In inhibition activity of xanthine oxidase, water extract showed low effect, which is 27.2% at 500ppm, in contrast to ethanol extract high effect: 99.5% at 500ppm, in nitrite-scavenging ability test, 500ppm of C. japonica Choisy water extract showed the effect of 51.3%, while 500ppm of C. japonica Choisy ethanol extract showed the effect of 72.7%. From the test of inhibitory effect of tyrosinase, both water and ethanol extract showed insufficient inhibitory rate. Conclusion : According to all the test results that have been given, it is possible that the extract of C. japonica Choisy can be used as a new natural material of the cosmeceutical industry.

The phenolic compounds of walnut extracts by various solvents were shown to be 24.3 mg/g in hot water, 34.4 mg/g in ethanol, 32.5 mg/g in methanol and 15.1 mg/g in acetone. In a comparison of phenolic compounds from hot water and different concentrations of ethanol, which are harmless, 60% ethanol extract and hot water extract were 34.7 mg/g, 24.6 mg/g. The electron donating ability (EDA) of walnut extracts in hot water and 60% ethanol were 78.1% and 80.6%. According to ABTS radical cation decolorization for antioxidant activity, hot water and 60% ethanol extract showed high antioxidant activities of 98.1% and 98.3%. Antioxidant protection factor (PF) were $1.1{\pm}0.2$ PF and $1.1{\pm}0.4$ PF in hot water and 60% ethanol extract. In TBARs inhibitory activity, each extract showed high antioxidant activities at 60% and 75%. Anti-inflammation effects of walnut extract were tested, and inhibition of NO was 50% in 100 ${\mu}g/ml$ phenolics. Inhibitory activity against iNOS and COX-2 were shown, through Western blot, to be 10% in 100 ${\mu}g/ml$ phenolics. Tyrosine inhibitory activity of 60% ethanol extract was 43%, and astringent effect of 60% ethanol extract was 55%. These results suggest that walnut extracts are suitable for functional cosmetics requiring skin-whitening and anti-wrinkle activity.

This research analyzed cell survival rate according to antioxidative effect and cytotoxicity using Sasa quelpaertensis and Ethanol extracts. Sasa quelpaertensis used extracts of $95^{\circ}C$ boiled-water extract and 70% ethanol liquid each. For total polyphenol content, tannin content, and flavonoid content, polyphenol content of $95^{\circ}C$ boiled-water extract was 26.6 mg/g while that of 70% ethanol extract liquid was 22.3 mg/g, which means polyphenol content was higher in $95^{\circ}C$ boiled-water extract. Tannin content was 72.1 mg/g in $95^{\circ}C$ boiled-water extract which was higher than 61.2 mg/g in 70% ethanol extract liquid. Total flavonoid content was higher in 70% ethanol extract liquid (25.4 mg/g) than in $95^{\circ}C$ boiled-water extract (17.8 mg/g). Further, the researcher measured DPPH radical elimination and ABTS radical elimination. As a result, as the concentration of each extract increased, DPPH radical elimination and ABTS radical elimination increased. In the DPPH radical elimination, L-ascorbic acid was eliminated at 500 ppm and showed no change even though the concentration increased, whereas it increased in BHT and Sasa quelpaertensis leaf extracts according to concentration. ABTS radical elimination indicated the similar phenomenon, whereas BHT showed maximum elimination at 500 ppm and decreased gradually as the concentration increased. On the other hand, it gradually increased in Sasa quelpaertensis leaf extract and showed 90% elimination at 10,000 pm, and it increased in $95^{\circ}C$ boiled-water extract. Using human skin fibroblasts (3T3) to check the cell survival rate of Sasa quelpaertensis leaves showed that cell survival rate decreased between 85.6 and 66.6% in $95^{\circ}C$ boiled-water extract. The cell survival rate was between 95.4 and 92.1% when using 70% ethanol extracts. Sasa quelpaertensis has efficacy as a natural antioxidant as well as a material hyangjang.
The hunter values, pH, turbidity, brownness and solid yields of extracts in a shoot and stem of Lycium chinense were investigated. The results were as follows; The relationships between solid yield and turbidity according to extract solvents was not significant. The range of pH were 5.4 to 6.17 and the acidity of extracts were slitely low. Lightness of water extract was lower than that of ethanol extract, but red and yellowness of water extract was higher than that of ethanol extract. And also turbidity of water extract was higher in water extracts.

The physiological activity of Lycii fructus extracts were examined. Total phenolic contents in the ethanol extracts (9.5 mg/g) of Lycii fructus were higher than that of water extracts (8.7 mg/g). The chlorogenic acid ($1.7{\mu}g$ in water extracts and $1.3{\mu}g$ in $60\%$ ethanol extract) was the most abundant phenolic compound as analyzed by HPLC. The ABTS [2,2'-azinobis (3-othylbenfothiaznoline-6- sulfornic acid)] radical decolor-ization electron donating ability (DPPH) and antioxidant protection factor (PF) were determined for extracts from Lycii fructus. Water extract ($76.7\%$ on ABTS, $92.6\%$ on DPPH and 1.1 on PF) showed higher inhibition rate than $60\%$ ethanol extracts ($52.8\%,\;88.8\%$ and 1.0). Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) was determined as $1.5{\times}10^{-3}\;{\mu}M$ in $60\%$ ethanol extract. Ethanol extracts was more effective in decreasing TBARS than water extracts. The water extracts from Lycii fructus had higher angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition activity than ethanol extracts. The result will be useful for functional foods application and under-standing the physiological activities of Lycii fructus.

This study investigated antioxidative and hypoglycemic activities of Omija for evaluation of usefulness as a functional food resource. Omija water extracts were extracted with water for 24 hr, 6 hr and 3 hr at room temperature, 60$^{\circ}C$ and 100$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Omija ethanol extracts were extracted with 60% ethanol for 24 hr and 3 hr at room temp temperature and 60$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The antioxidant properties of Omija(Schizandra chinensis Baillon) extracts prepared under different extraction conditions were evaluated by a variety of radical scavenging assays including DPPH, $ABTS^{{cdot}+}$, and nitrite and reducing power. Hypoglycemic activity was examined for $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibition using an in vitro model. The total phenolic content was also determined. Antioxidant activities of Omija were the highest in the group extracted with 60% ethanol for 3 hr. The ethanol extracts showed higher activity than water extracts. An extraction temperature was the highest in 60$^{\circ}C$. The total phenolic content extracted with 60% ethanol for 3 hr at 60$^{\circ}C$ was 530 mg GAE/100 g. The water extract extracted with water for 24 hr at room temperature showed the lowest antioxidant activity and phenolic content. $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitory activity was the highest in the group extracted with 60% ethanol for 3 hr at 60$^{\circ}C$, followed by the group extracted with 60% ethanol for 24 hr. The results suggest that extraction of Omija by 60% ethanol for 3 hr at 60$^{\circ}C$ will be useful as a functional food resource with natural antioxidants and hypoglycemic activities.

This study was investigated to determine antimicrobial activity of the water and ethanol extracts of Korean wild green tea, semi-fermented tea, and fermented tea. Antimicrobial activity was examined against 8 kinds of several microorganisms. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the water and ethanol extracts of green tea showed the most active antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis 0.2 mg/mL in Gram positive bacteria and P. fluorescens 0.3∼0.5 mg/mL in Gram negative bacteria. But the extracts did not show antimicrobial activity against lactic acid bacteria and yeast at the level of less than 1 mg/mL. Antimicrobial activity got lower as tea got more fermented. Antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts from green tea, semifermented tea, and fermented tea was stronger than that of water extracts. Antimicrobial activity of the water and ethanol extracts of green tea, semi-fermented tea, and fermented tea was not destroyed at 50∼121$^{\circ}C$, and pH 3∼11, which proved to be very stable when given over heat, acid & alkali treatment. The ethanol extract of green tea, semi-fermented tea, and fermented tea was fractionated in the order of hexane, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate and water fraction. The highest antimicrobial activity was found in the water fraction, but not found in hexane fraction, while antimicrobial activity of fermented tea was not found in ether fraction.
This study was conducted to gather basic data on the physiological activities of flower extracts from 4 cultivars of white lotus to promote the increase of public consumption. Four cultivars of white lotus: c.v. 'Garam', 'Choeue', 'Baekhwageonryeon', and 'Seungdal' were harvested on 14, August, 2007, and the physiological activities of flower extracts obtained by hot water extraction and ethanol extraction were examined. Total phenol content was highest in the 'Garam' flower hot water extracts, $144.2{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$, and lowest in the 'Seungdal' flower ethanol extracts, $63.4{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$. DPPH radical scavenging activity was highest at 2,000ppm flower extract of 'Garam' obtained by hot water extraction and ethanol extraction of 90.9% and 83.0%, respectively. Total flavonoid content in the flower extracts of 'Garam' obtained by hot water extraction and ethanol extraction showed the highest levels at $34.1{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}\;and\;33.9^{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$, respectively. Nitrite scavenging activity at 1,000ppm flower extract was highest in 'Garam'. Extracts obtain by hot water and ethanol showed 91.3% and 80.4% activity, respectively. No significant difference in tyrosinase inhibition activity was observed among the cultivars or as a result of extraction method. Overall anti-microbial activity of the flower extracts was slightly higher in 'Garam' than in the other cultivars.
