  • We consider the problem of estimating the scale parameter of the Weibull distribution based on multiply Type-II censord samples. We propose some estimators by using the approximate maximum likelihood estimation method. The proposed estimators are compared in the sense of the mean squared error.

  • By assuming a general progressive Type-II censored sample, we propose the minimum risk estimator (MRE) and the approximate maximum likelihood estimator (AMLE) of the scale parameter of the one-parameter exponential distribution. An example is given to illustrate the methods of estimation discussed in this paper.

  • For repairable software systems, the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) is used as a measure of software system stability. Therefore, the evaluation of software reliability requirements or reliability characteristics can be applied MTBF. In this paper, we want to compare MTBF in terms of parameter estimation using Makeham life distribution. The parameter estimates used the least square method which is regression analyzer method and the maximum likelihood method. As a result, the MTBF using the least square method shows a non-decreased pattern and case of the maximum likelihood method shows a non-increased form as the failure time increases. In comparison with the observed MTBF, MTBF using the maximum likelihood estimation is smallerd about difference of interval than the least square estimation which is regression analyzer method. Thus, In terms of MTBF, the maximum likelihood estimation has efficient than the regression analyzer method. In terms of coefficient of determination, the mean square error and mean error of prediction, the maximum likelihood method can be judged as an efficient method.

  • In this paper, we derive the approximate maximum likelihood estimators of the scale parameter and the location parameter in a generalized extreme value distribution under multiply Type-II censoring by the approximate maximum likelihood estimation method. We compare the proposed estimators in the sense of the mean squared error for various censored samples.

  • Many authors have utilized an exponential distribution because of its wide applicability in reliability engineering and statistical inferences (see Bain & Engelhart(1987) and Saunders & Mann(1985)). Here we are considering the parametric estimation in an exponential distribution when its scale and location parametes are linear functions of a known exposure level t, which often occurs in the engineering and physical phenomena.

  • Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) of the generalized extreme value distribution (GEVD) is known to sometimes over-estimate the positive value of the shape parameter for the small sample size. The maximum penalized likelihood estimation (MPLE) with Beta penalty function was proposed by some researchers to overcome this problem. But the determination of the hyperparameters (HP) in Beta penalty function is still an issue. This paper presents some data adaptive methods to select the HP of Beta penalty function in the MPLE framework. The idea is to let the data tell us what HP to use. For given data, the optimal HP is obtained from the minimum distance between the MLE and MPLE. A bootstrap-based method is also proposed. These methods are compared with existing approaches. The performance evaluation experiments for GEVD by Monte Carlo simulation show that the proposed methods work well for bias and mean squared error. The methods are applied to Blackstone river data and Korean heavy rainfall data to show better performance over MLE, the method of L-moments estimator, and existing MPLEs.

  • This paper deals with the estimation of limiting distribution parameters, which have a close relation with product reliability characteristics in reliability test. Among the many kinds of estimation methods, probability paper is commonly used. The limiting probability paper is very convenient, but it has a great disadvantage in estimation accuracy by plotting method. It is very difficult to get the same results even if one use the same data several times. A computer program for the regression method is used for the parameter estimation to reduce these errors. Especially, the computer graphic program was written in GW-BASIC 3.22 language and a couple of running examples for user's reference appears in the appendix part.

  • This paper discusses the state-of-the-art techniques in real-time state estimation for the Smart Microgrids. The most popular method used in traditional power system state estimation is a Weighted Least Square(WLS) algorithm which is based on Maximum Likelihood(ML) estimation under the assumption of static system state being a set of deterministic variables. In this paper, we present a survey of dynamic state estimation techniques for Smart Microgrids based on Belief Propagation (BP) when the system state is a set of stochastic variables. The measurements are often too sparse to fulfill the system observability in the distribution network of microgrids. The BP algorithm calculates posterior distributions of the state variables for real-time sparse measurements. Smart Microgrids are modeled as a factor graph suitable for characterizing the linear correlations among the state variables. The state estimator performs the BP algorithm on the factor graph based the stochastic model. The factor graph model can integrate new models for solar and wind correlation. It provides the Smart Microgrids with a way of integrating the distributed renewable energy generation. Our study on Smart Microgrid state estimation can be extended to the estimation of unbalanced three phase distribution systems as well as the optimal placement of smart meters.

  • The economic world is full of patterns, many of which exert a profound influence over society and business. One of the most contentious is the distribution of wealth. Way back in 1897, an Italian engineer-turned-economist named Vilfredo Pareto discovered a pattern in the distribution of wealth that appears to be every bit as universal as the laws of thermodynamics or chemistry. The present paper proposes some Bayes estimators of shape parameter of Pareto income distribution in censored sampling. Asymmetric LINEX loss function has been considered to study the effects of overestimation and underestimation. For the prior distribution of the parameter involved a number of priors including one and two-parameter exponential, truncated Erlang and doubly truncated gamma have been contemplated to express the belief of the experimenter s/he has regarding the parameter. The estimators thus obtained have been compared theoretically and empirically with the corresponding estimators under squared error loss function, some of which were reported by Bhattacharya et al. (1999).
