  • We propose a new time-division half-duplex estimate-and-forward (EF) relaying strategy suitable for a relay with mobility. We reconfigure EF relaying to guarantee a strong relay-destination link which is required to achieve a high rate using EF relaying. Based on the reconfigured model, we optimize the relaying strategy to attain a high rate irrespective of the relay position with preserving the total transmit bandwidth and energy. The proposed relaying strategy achieves high communication reliability for any relay position, which differs from conventional EF and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying schemes.

  • In this paper, we propose a practical time-division half-duplex Estimate and Forward (EF) relaying protocol. The conventional EF relaying protocol works well only when the relay node is near the destination node. The proposed EF relaying protocol, however, determines adaptively relay parameters such as the quantization level of relay node and the power allocation between source and relay nodes according to the channel conditions. By doing so, the proposed EF relaying protocol provides low probability of bit error even when the relay node is far from the destination node. Consequently, the proposed EF protocol is suitable for the mobile relay systems. It is shown by simulations that the proposed EF relaying protocol shows lower bit error rate for all relay positions than a conventional EF protocol.

  • Multi-hop relaying communications have great potentials in improving transmission performance by deploying relay nodes. The benefit is critically dependent on the accuracy of the channel state information (CSI) of all the transmitting links. However, the CSI has to be estimated. In this paper, we investigate the channel estimation problem in one-way multi-hop MIMO amplify-and-forward (AF) relay system, where both the two-hop and three-hop communication link exist. Traditional point-to-point MIMO channel estimation methods will result in error propagation in estimating relay links, and separately tackling the channel estimation issue of each link will lose the gain as part of channel matrices involved in multiple communication links. In order to exploit all the available gains, we develop a novel channel estimation model by structuring different communication links using the PARAFAC and PARATUCK2 tensor analysis. Furthermore, a two-stage fitting algorithm is derived to estimate all the channel matrices involved in the communication process. In particular, essential uniqueness is further discussed. Simulation results demonstrate the advantage and effectiveness of the proposed channel estimator.

  • In this paper, a pilot emitting amplify-and-forward relay and its beamforming schemes, OBF (overall beamforming) and RBF (hop-by-hop beamforming), are proposed for two-hop relaying systems. The OBF performs beamforming with respect to a overall channel from a source node (SN) to a destination node (DN) through a relay node (RN), while the proposed RBF performs two independent beamformings: from the SN to the RN and from the RN to the DN. From our analytic and numerical results, it is shown that bit-error-rate (BER) performance of the proposed RBF is better than that of the OBF scheme since the RBF system can estimate channel more proper than the CBF system, which is verified by deriving and comparing the mean square errors of the channel estimation.
