  • Kimchi is well known as a traditional Korean food containing various antioxidative compounds and it has been demonstrated that dietary kimchi inhibit the tissue oxidation and aging in many related studies. Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation is the most potent among the many related factor to skin photo-aging. This experiment is designed to elucidate the inhibitory effect of solvent fractionation of various kimchi on UVB induced oxidation and erythema formation. Among solvent fractions, phenol content mostly existed in dichloromethane / ethylacetate fraction of buchu kimchi, dichloromethane fraction of Korean cabbage kimchi and ethylacetate / dichloromethane fraction of mustard leaf kimchi. Free radical scavenging activities were higher in dichloromethane and ethylacetate fraction from buchu kimchi, dichloromethane fraction from Korean cabbage kimchi, and ethylacetate fraction from mustard leaf kimchi. When the damage of photo-oxidation by UVB irradiation was tested in the presence of solvent fractions of kimchi, dichloromethane / ethylacetate fraction of buchu kimchi, ethylacetate fraction from Korean cabbage and from mustard leaf kimchi showed the higher protective activities than others. The erythema formations which were induced by UVB irradiation were decreased in solvent fractions of kimchi that hate higher antioxidant activities. In conclusion, kimchi solvent fractions having antioxidant compounds mostly inhibited photo-oxidation and erythema formation by UV-irradiation, therefore kimchi consumption can retard skin aging due to the presence of antioxidative compounds.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this report is to know the effect of Korean medicine treatments on Allergic Contact Dermatitis. Methods : We treated a 63-years-old man patient with Allergic Contact Dermatitis on the left medial calf with Korean medicine. After Korean medical treatment for 26 days, we identified a reduction in size of erythema and loss of color fading, exudates and edema. We recorded pictures of changes on symptoms. Results & Conclusions : The symptoms of Allergic Contact Dermatitis were improved. Erythema, edema, exudate were lost. Thus Korean medicine treatments are effective on allergic contact dermatitis.

  • Effects of grapefruit seed extract on the lethality, the primary skin irritation, and the acute eye irritation potentials were evaluated in rats. The acute oral $LD_{50}$ of GFSE for Sprague-Dawley derived rats was 3.75g/kg with 95% confidence limits of 2.55 and 5.52g/kg. Patch application to the intact and abraded skin of rabbits led to mild to moderate erythema and no or mild edema. Application to the eyes of rabbits led to severe corneal opacity, iritis, conjunctival erythema, edema, and discharge.

  • Acute idiopathic scrotal edema (AISE) is a self-limiting condition that is characterized by acute scrotal swelling and erythema. AISE is a very rare cause of acute scrotum, especially in neonates. We report a case of AISE in a 26-day-old infant who was admitted to the outpatient clinic with swelling and erythema of the penis and scrotum for a week. His vital signs were stable, and laboratory findings were non-specific. A diagnosis of AISE was made using scrotal ultrasonography with color Doppler. His symptoms resolved within four days after the onset of supportive treatment, and he was discharged from the hospital. In neonates with an acute scrotum, AISE should be considered to prevent unnecessary surgical exploration.

  • Background : With the growing use of chemical products such as cosmetics, hair dyes, reports of side effects following application of these products is increasing. Contact dermatitis commonly occurs with the use of chemical products. Objective : This study investigated the effect of Oriental medicine for Four outpatients with contact dermatitis due to chemical products. Method : Four patients were treated with acupuncture, herbal medication etc. We used visual analogue scales(VAS) to estimate erythema, pruritus, edema, scales, etc. We took the photos of lesions. Results : Two patients were due to hair dyes, the other two patients were due to cosmetics. Erythema and Pruritus were decreased from nine days to one month. Conclusion : We expect that Oriental medicine could be helpful for contact dermatitis.

  • Dichloromethane, ethanol, and boiling water extracts of the brown alga Ecklonia cava were examined in vivo for their antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory activities in mice. These activities were evaluated by yeast-induced pyrexia, tail-flick test, and phorbol myristate acetate-induced inflammation (edema, erythema, and blood flow). Ethanol extract of E. cava (0.4 mg/ear) inhibited the inflammatory symptoms of mouse ear edema, erythema, and blood flow by 82.6%, 69.0%, and 65.4%, respectively. This extract also demonstrated potent analgesic activity. No acute toxicity was observed after p.o. administration of each extract (5 g/kg bw). These in vivo data are in agreement with the claims of the health care industry and indigenous medicine that E. cava is an effective remedy for inflammation-related symptoms.

  • Objectives : This study is designed to observe anaphylatic reaction In two patients, who visited Dong-Eui University Oriental Medicine Center for Bee-Venom Acupuncture. Methods : Anaphylaxis is a clinical syndrome cheracterized by the acute system reaction of multiple organ systems to an IgE-mediated immunologic mediator release in previously sensitized individuals. Anaphylatic reaction of two patients treated by Bee-Venom Acupuncture were observed in order to analysis the clinical form. Results & Conclusion : STZ One case of Anaphylatic reaction was expressed clinically hypotension drowsy mentality, dizziness muscle contraction and so on. The other case was expressed ulticaria, itching sensation, nausea and erythema. Especially ulticaria erythema are end points of increased vascular permeability and vasodilatation at the extreme of the clinical spectrum.

  • We examined the effect of topical application of Shimotsu-to, a traditional Chinese herbal prescription, on carrageenin-induced edema in rats and ultraviolet radiation-induced erythema in guinea pigs. Shimotsu-to (5% in water) markedly suppressed an acute edema of rat hindpaw induced by 1% carrageenin, and was more effective than any other single crude drug componcent of Shimotsu-to, Topical treatment with this prescription also inhibited ultraviolet erythema on the back skin of guinea pigs (a human sunbrun model). These results suggest the therapeutic effect on acute inflammation by topical application of Shimotsu-to.

  • We report a human parechovirus-3 (HPeV-3) infection in 2 neonates who had prolonged fever (>5 days) with palmar-plantar erythema. This distinctive rash was observed 4-5 days after fever onset, just before defervescence. Elevated aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and ferritin levels were characteristic laboratory findings in the 2 cases, suggesting tissue damage caused by hypercytokinemia. Case 1 was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin, considering the possibility of severe systemic inflammatory responses. The initial ferritin level was 385 ng/mL (range, 0-400 ng/mL); however, the level increased to 2,581 ng/dL on day 5 after fever onset. Case 2 presented with milder clinical symptoms, and the patient recovered spontaneously. HPeV-3 was detected in cerebrospinal fluid and/or blood samples, but no other causative agents were detected. The findings from our cases, in accordance with recent studies, suggest that clinical features such as palmar-plantar erythema and/or hyperferritinemia might be indicators of HPeV-3 infection in neonates with sepsis-like illness. In clinical practice, where virology testing is not easily accessible, clinical features such as palmar-plantar erythema and/or hyperferritinemia might be helpful to diagnose HPeV-3 infection.
