According to the axial torsion applied at power transmission and the vibration from the roughness of road surface, this paper analyzes the stresses on two kinds of universal joint model. As stress and deformation at model 2 becomes smaller than model 1 on structural analysis, model 2 is more stabilized than model 1. The natural frequencies at model 1 and 2 are 7,040 and 9,540 Hz respectively. As the natural frequency range of model 2 becomes higher than model 1, model 2 becomes safer than model 1. Critical frequencies at these models are calculated through harmonic response analyses. On critical frequencies at model 1 and 2, the stress at model 2 becomes lower than 2 times as much as model 1 and the deformation at model 2 becomes lower than 4 times as much as model 1. Model 2 on durability is thought to become better than model 1. This study result is applied with the design of safe universal joint and it can be useful to improve the durability by predicting prevention against the deformation due to its vibration.

Liquefaction characteristics of saturated sand under various dynamic loadings such as sinusoidal, wedge, increasing wedge and real earthquake loading are investigated focusing on the excess pore water pressure build up instead of liquefaction resistance strength in this paper. There are large differences between two types of earthquake loading - impact and vibration in liquefaction characteristics. The angle of phase change line of sinusoidal loading is very close to the vibration type, whereas the cumulative deviator stress and cumulative plastic strain are larger than two types of real earthquake loadings. On the other hand, the liquefaction characteristics of increasing wedge loadings are located in the range between vibration and impact earthquake loadings. It is concluded that the sinusoidal loading overestimates the resistance of soil under real earthquake loading. Based on results obtained, the increasing wedge loading can reflect the liquefaction behavior under real earthquake loadings more efficiently than sinusoidal loading based on equivalent uniform stress concept.

The purpose of this study is to research dampers, which are applied mainly to buildings adjacent to the coast, such as nuclear facilities, and used for ventilation and can safely protect lives and equipment in emergency situations. Comparing the equivalent stress for three models with hinge reinforcement and support reinforcement based on the early design model for Damper, in the Base model, the highest stress occurred in the part of hinge, especially in the centrally mounted hinge, and after reinforced the hinge, it was occurred in the rear support. For models reinforced hinges and supports, it is considered that reinforcement for stiffness will be required in the future as it entered within the range of allowable stress. For the safety factor distribution, the minimum safety ratio was sufficiently secured at least 1 and was high at the edge of the Damper frame and the Blade. As the hinge was reinforced, the safety factor distribution of Blade was increased, and it was verified that the safety factor was secured through the support reinforcement.

The contribution of tensioned concrete between cracks (tension-stiffening) cannot be ignored when analysing deformation of reinforced concrete elements. The tension-stiffening effect is crucial when it comes to adequately estimating the load-deformation response of steel reinforced concrete and the more recently appeared fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforced concrete. This paper presents a unified methodology for numerical modelling of the tension-stiffening effect in steel as well as FRP reinforced flexural members using the concept of equivalent deformation modulus and the smeared crack approach to obtain a modified stress-strain relation of the reinforcement. A closed-form solution for the equivalent secant modulus of deformation of the tensioned reinforcement is proposed for rectangular sections taking the Eurocode 2 curvature prediction technique as the reference. Using equations based on general principles of structural mechanics, the main influencing parameters are obtained. It is found that the ratio between the equivalent stiffness and the initial stiffness basically depends on the product of the modular ratio and reinforcement ratio ($n{\rho}$), the effective-to-total depth ratio (d/h), and the level of loading. The proposed methodology is adequate for numerical modelling of tension-stiffening for different FRP and steel reinforcement, under both service and ultimate conditions. Comparison of the predicted and experimental data obtained by the authors indicates that the proposed methodology is capable to adequately model the tension-stiffening effect in beams reinforced with FRP or steel bars within wide range of loading.
The current study is concerned with the prediction of fracture strains for DP980 steel sheets over a wide range of loading paths. The use of DP980 steel is increasing significantly in automotive industries for enhanced safety and higher fuel efficiency. The material behavior of advanced high-strength steels (AHSSs) sheets sometimes show unpredictable and sudden fracture during sheet metal forming. A modified Lou-Huh ductile fracture criterion is utilized to predict the formability of AHSSs because the conventional forming limit diagram (FLD) constructed based on necking is unable to evaluate the formability of AHSSs sheets. Fracture loci were extracted from three dimensional fracture envelopes by assuming the plane-stress condition to evaluate equivalent plastic strains at the onset of fracture for a wide range of loading paths. Three different types of specimens -- pure shear, dog-bone and plane strain grooved -- were utilized for tensile testing to calibrate the fracture model of DP980 steel sheets. Fracture strains of each loading path were evaluated such that there shows little deviation between fracture strains predicted from the fracture model and the experimental measurements. From the comparison, it is clearly shown that the three dimensional fracture envelopes can accurately predict the onset of the fracture of DP980 steel sheets for complicated loading conditions from compressive loading to shear loading and to equibiaxial tensile loading.

This study investigates the strength durability of an automotive front bumper subjected to vibrations during driving. Through structural analyses, the maximum equivalent stresses of models 1 and 2 were found to be 187.09 and 278.4 MPa, respectively. The maximum deformations of models 1 and 2 were 1.3772 and 2.675 mm, respectively. As model 1 shows less deformation than model 2, itis stronger than model 2. Models 1and 2 show natural frequencies within 230 Hz as the range of the maximum harmonic response frequency. Models 1 and 2 have maximum amplitude displacements of 0.105 and 0.154 mm at critical frequencies of 159 and 110 Hz, respectively. As model 1 has a higher critical frequency than model 2, it has more strength durability than model 2. This study result can be effectively utilized for the design of a front bumper by investigating prevention against damage and its strength durability.
Safe underground construction in a rock mass requires adequate ground investigation and effective determination of rock conditions. The estimation of rock mass behavior is difficult, because rock masses are innately anisotropic and heterogeneous at different scales and are affected by various environmental factors. Quantitative rock mass classification systems, such as the Q-system and rock mass rating, are widely used for characterization and engineering design. The measurement of rock classification parameters is subjective and can vary among observers, resulting in questionable accuracy. Geophysical investigation methods, such as seismic surveys, have also been used for ground characterization. Torsional shear wave propagation characteristics in cylindrical rods are equal to that in an infinite media. A probabilistic quantitative relationship between the Q-value and shear wave velocity is thus investigated considering long-wavelength wave propagation in equivalent continuum jointed rock masses. Individual Q-system parameters are correlated with stress-dependent shear wave velocities in jointed rocks using experimental and numerical methods. The relationship between the Q-value and the shear wave velocity is normalized using a defined reference condition. This relationship is further improved using probabilistic analysis to remove unrealistic data and to suggest a range of Q-values for a given wave velocity. The proposed probabilistic Q-value estimation is then compared with field measurements and cross-hole seismic test data to verify its applicability.
Since existing constitutive models developed for confined normal strength concrete overestimate ductility when they are applied to confined high strength concrete, these models cannot be directly applied to confined high strength concrete. In an effort to solve this problem, an accurate stress-strain relationship of the hihg strength concrete needs to be formulated by examining the confinement effects due to increase of the concrete strength. In this study, a constitutive model is developed to express the stress-strain relationship of confined high strength concrete by carrying out regression analysis of the main parameters affection strength and ductile behavior of reinforced high strength concrete columns. Twenty-five test specimens were chosen from the reported experimental studies in the literature. The experimental results of stress-strain relationships of show a good agreement with results of the stress-strain relationships of suggested high strength concrete, covering a strength range between 60 and 124 MPa.
The use of thin plate increases due to the need for light weight in large ship. Thin plate is easily distorted and has residual stress by welding heat. Therefore, the thin plate should be carefully joined to minimize the welding deformation which costs time and money for repair. For one effort to reduce welding deformation, it is very useful to predict welding deformation before welding execution. There are two methods to analyze welding deformation. One is simple linear analysis. The other is nonlinear analysis. The simple linear analysis is elastic analysis using the equivalent load method or inherent strain method from welding experiments. The nonlinear analysis is thermo-elastic analysis which gives consideration to the nonlinearity of material dependent on temperature and time, welding current, voltage, speed, sequence and constraint. In this study, the welding deformation is analyzed by using thermo-elastic method for PCTC(Pure Car and Truck Carrier) which carries cars and trucks. PCTC uses thin plates of 6mm thickness which is susceptible to welding heat. The analysis dimension is 19,200mm(length) * 13,825mm(width) * 376mm(height). MARC and MENTAT are used as pre and post processor and solver. The boundary conditions are based on the real situation in shipyard. The simulations contain convection and gravity. The material of the thin block is mild steel with $235N/mm^2$ yield strength. Its nonlinearity of conductivity, specific heat, Young's modulus and yield strength is applied in simulations. Welding is done in two pass. First pass lasts 2,100 second, then it rests for 900 second, then second pass lasts 2,100 second and then it rests for 20,000 second. The displacement at 0 sec is caused by its own weight. It is maximum 19mm at the free side. The welding line expands, shrinks during welding and finally experiences shrinkage. It results in angular distortion of thin block. Final maximum displacement, 17mm occurs around welding line. The maximum residual stress happens at the welding line, where the stress is above the yield strength. Also, the maximum equivalent plastic strain occurs at the welding line. The plastic strain of first pass is more than that of second pass. The flatness of plate in longitudinal direction is calculated in parallel with the direction of girder and compared with deformation standard of ${\pm}15mm$. Calculated value is within the standard range. The flatness of plate in transverse direction is calculated in perpendicular to the direction of girder and compared with deformation standard of ${\pm}6mm$. It satisfies the standard. Buckle of plate is calculated between each longitudinal and compared with the deformation standard. All buckle value is within the standard range of ${\pm}6mm$.
A stress-induced brittle failure in deep tunneling generates spalling and slabbing, eventually causing a v-shaped notch formation. An empirical relationship for the depth of the notch to the maximum tangential stress assuming an equivalent circular cross-section was proposed (Martin et al. 1999). While this empirical approach has been well recognized in the industry and used as a design guideline in many projects, its applicability to a non-circular opening is worth revisiting due to the use of equivalent circular profile. Moreover, even though the extent of the notch also contributes to notch failure, it has not been estimated to date. When the estimate of both the depth and the extent of notch are combined, a practical and economically justifiable support design can be achieved. In this study, a new methodology to assess the depth as well as the extent of notch failure is developed. Field data and numerical simulations using the Cohesion Weakening Frictional Strengthening (CWFS) model were collected and correlated with the three most commonly accepted failure criteria (σ1/σ3, Dis=σmax/σc, σdev/σcm). For the numerical analyses, the D-shaped tunnel was used since most civil tunnels are built to this profile. Inferential statistical analysis is applied to predict the failure range with a 95% confidence level. Considering its accuracy and simplicity, the new correlation can be used as an enhanced version of failure assessment.
