  • This paper discuss the conditionally sampled actual wind pressure distributions causing peak quasi-static wind loads in the large span roofs using the wind pressures at many locations on dome models measured simultaneously in a wind tunnel. The actual extreme pressure distributions are compared itk load-response-correlation (LRC) method and the quasi-steady pressure distributions. Based on the results, the reason for the discrepancy in the LRC pressure distribution and the actual extreme pressure distribution are discussed. Futhermore, a brief discussion is made of the equivalent static wind load estimation for the large span roofs.

  • For floating buildings may fl oat on the water for a long time, they are constantly affected by various environmental loads such as wind and wave loads. In this study to find the wave effect on the floating building, five models are designed using steel moment resisting frame. It is assumed that the lower part of the floating building is a reinforced concrete pontoon, while the upper part is a three-story steel frame. To analyze floating buildings affected by wind and wave loads, hydro-dynamic and substructure analysis are performed. As input loads, this study set limits that the mean wind velocity is 35 m/s and the significant wave height is 0.5 m for the residential building. From the hydrodynamic analysis, the time-history acceleration of building is obtained and transformed into a base ground input for a substructure analysis of the superstructure of the building. Finally the mean of the maximum from 30 dynamic analysis of the floating buildings are used to be compared with the results of the same model on the ground. It was shown that the dynamic results with wind and wave loads are not always lesser than the static results which are calculated with static equivalent wind load for a building that is located on the ground.

  • With the change and development of modem architecture, architectural configurations are increasingly diversified and irregular. However, the building configurations without proper seismic considerations may cause severe damages under earthquake loads. Therefore, it is necessary to establish and implement more properly classified, specific and advanced conceptual seismic design strategies. This study explores the relationship between building configurations and seismic performance by adopting several horizontal building configurations with various re-entrant corners. For the clear comparison of five different horizontal configuration models, almost aspects of structural properties are equalized. The equivalent static analyses are conducted with the aim of understanding the characteristics of various re-entrant comers under standard earthquake loads. The seismic advantages of regular configuration model are clearly approved and the structural weak points at the re-entrant comers are investigated numerically and graphically.

  • The safety criteria for the simple beam with a rigid-plastic model under the impulsive loadings are established with the peak-load ratio to the static collapse load and impulse ratio to the ideal impulse producing the plastic hinge at the mid-span. It is shown that the impulse and peak-load of the impulsive loadings are the important factors for the damage of the structures. It is also shown that the damage curves with the peak-load and impulse ratio may be useful method to estimate the damage of the structures due to the emphasis on the equivalent dynamic loads rather than the equivalent static loads in the process of deriving the curve.

  • In the analysis of the effects of rock tunnel blasting vibration on adjacent existing buildings, the model of simplified equivalent load produces higher calculation result of vibration, due to the lack of consideration of the millisecond delay effect. This paper, based on the static force equivalence principle of blasting load, proposes a new determination method of equivalent load of blasting vibration. The proposed method, based on the elastic-static force equivalence principle of stress wave, equals the blasting loads of several single blastholes in the same section of millisecond blasting to the triangle blasting load curve of the exploded equivalent elastic boundary surface. According to the attenuation law of stress wave, the attenuated equivalent triangle blasting load curve of the equivalent elastic boundary is applied on the tunnel excavation contour surface, obtaining the final applied equivalent load. Taking the millisecond delay time of different sections into account, the time-history curve of equivalent load of the whole section applied on the tunnel excavation contour surface can be obtained. Based on Sailing Tunnel with small spacing on Sanmenxia-Xichuan Expressway, an analysis on the blasting vibration response of the later and early stages of the tunnel construction is carried out through numerical simulation using the proposed equivalent load model considering millisecond delay effect and the simplified equivalent triangle load curve model respectively. The analysis of the numerical results comparing with the field monitoring ones shows that the calculation results obtained from the proposed equivalent load model are closer to the measured ones and more feasible.

  • In this study, static and dynamic transient analysis of tracked vehicle structure with recoil impact load is performed for transient impact and traveling load using ANSYS and ABAQUS FEM codes. When transient impact loads are applied at tracked vehicle, the maximum dynamic Von Mises stress occurs between beam stiffener of upper plate and race ring and stress level is about 390-450 MPa. The results of transient analysis shows similar level and tendency with static stress with dynamic force effect of 1.6. The excessive stresses occur around the race ring for the both cases. When the traveling loads are applied on the tracked vehicle, the maximum Tresca stress occurs around suspension #1 and is about 450 MPa and results of static and nonlinear transient analysis are quite similar.

  • This study investigates structural durability through the analyses of stress, fatigue life and vibration damage at bike carrier basket. As model 2 has less stress and deformation than model 1 on static structural analysis, model 2 becomes more durable than model 1. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads, 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load becomes most unstable but 'Sample history' becomes most stable. The amplitude deformations become highest at maximum response frequency of 2400Hz in cases of models 1 and 2. As the values of maximum equivalent stresses become within the allowable material stresses at two holes at the upper parts on models 1 and 2, these models become safe. The structural result of this study can be effectively utilized with the design of bike carrier basket by investigating prevention and durability against fatigue or vibration damage.

  • This paper studied on stability of the U-channel segmental concrete bridge under vehicle-impact loads. The U-channel bridge has advantages in that it reduces an additional dead load and the edge beams role as a barrier. But it has a dangerous factor which collapses the bridge structure when the edge beams are ruptured. Therefore, it is necessary to verify behaviors of the bridge system under vehicle-impact loads. Static and dynamic vehicle impact simulations were carried out on the basis of AASHTO LRFD design specifications. In case of the static analysis, equivalent static loads specified in the AASHTO codes are loaded on the edge beams and in case of the dynamic analysis, FEM vehicle models are modeled by applying the dynamic test specifications of AASHTO codes. As a result, it is shown that U-channel bridge system has sufficient safety against static and dynamic impact loads specified in the AASHTO LRFD design specifications.

  • Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the progressive and rapid spread of reinforced concrete (RC) has led to the adoption of mixed masonry-RC solutions, such as the confined masonry. However, together with structures conceived with a definite role for earthquake behaviour, the spreading of RC technology has caused the birth of mixed solutions inspired more by functional aspects than by structural ones, such as: internal masonry walls replaced by RC frames, RC walls inserted to build staircases or raising made from RC frames. Usually, since these interventions rise from a spontaneous build-up, any capacity design or ductility concepts are neglected being designed only to bear vertical loads: thus, the vulnerability assessment of this class becomes crucial. To investigate the non-linear seismic response of these structures, suitable models and effective numerical tools are needed. Among the various modelling approaches proposed in the literature and codes, the authors focus their attention on the equivalent frame model. After a brief description of the adopted model and its numerical validation, the authors aim to point out some specific peculiarities of the seismic response of mixed masonry-RC structures and their repercussions on safety verification procedures (referring in particular way to the non-linear static ones). In particular, the results of non-linear static analyses performed parametrically to various configurations representative of different interventions are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to review and validate the seismic analysis procedures of turbine-generator foundation specified in the Korea Building Code which adopts equivalent static analysis. Typical machines and foundations were chosen and various kinds of parametric studies were peformed and the results were compared with the detail dynamic analysis. The general trend of the study results showed that the most of the computed responses of equivalent static analysis are smaller than those of the dynamic analyses(response spectrum analysis and time history analysis), which implies the existing seismic analysis technique using the existing Building Code may give unconservative design results. The results also showed that the seismic loads are one of the governing design parameters of the turbine-generator foundations.
