Among many structural dynamics modification methods for plate and shell vibration problems, embedding an emboss to the surface is very efficient. But deciding an optimal position and shape using optimization algorithm needs defining geometry and remeshing the model for every iteration step to implement the method, which takes much numerical cost. This study is to propose a modified equivalent frame model for flat plate slabs under lateral loads. ACI 318 (2002) allows equivalent frame methods to conduct two-way slab system analysis subjected to gravity loads as well as lateral loads. Since the equivalent frame method in the ACI 318 (2002) has been developed base on the behavior of two-way system for gravity loads, and nay not predict the behavior of flat plate slabs under lateral loads with good precision. This study develops a modified equivalent frame model which can give more precise answer for flat plate slabs under lateral loads. This model reflects the actual force transfer mechanism among the components of flat plate slab system, which are slabs, columns and torsional members, more accurately under lateral loads than existing equivalent frame models. The accuracy of this model is verified by comparing the analysis results using the proposed model with the results of finite element analysis. The analysis results of other existing models are included in the comparison. For this purpose, 2 story building having 3 spans in both directions is considered. Analytical results show that the modified equivalent frame model produces comparable drift and slab internal moments with those obtained from finite element analysis.
In this paper, a simplified seismic design method for low-rise dual frame-steel plate shear wall (SPSW) structures is proposed in the framework of performance-based seismic design. The dynamic response of a low-rise structure is mainly dominated by the first-mode and the structural system can be simplified to an equivalent single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) oscillator. The dual frame-SPSW structure was decomposed into a frame system and a SPSW system and they were simplified to an equivalent F-SDOF (SDOF for frame) oscillator and an equivalent S-SDOF (SDOF for SPSW) oscillator, respectively. The analytical models of F-SDOF and S-SDOF oscillators were constructed based on the OpenSees platform. The equivalent SDOF oscillator (D-SDOF, dual SDOF) for the frame-SPSW system was developed by combining the F-SDOF and S-SDOF oscillators in parallel. By employing the lateral force resistance coefficients and seismic demands of D-SDOF oscillator, the design approach of SPSW systems was developed. A 7-story frame-SPSW system was adopted to verify the feasibility and demonstrate the design process of the simplified method. The results also show the seismic demands derived by the equivalent dual SDOF oscillator have a good consistence with that by the frame-SPSW structure.

The sandwich plate has been widely used as an efficient structural member because it has high strength-to-weight and high stiffness-to-weight ratios. To properly design the aluminum extrusion plate , it is necessary to analyze structural behaviors of the extrusions, however, the aluminum extrusions have been rarely studied until now. In the optimization process through numerous iterative calculations, finite element analysis of the sandwich plate with hollow core section requires a considerable amount of computation time and cost. In this paper, the aluminum extrusion plate with truss-core is transformed into an equivalent homogeneous orthotropic plate with appropriate elastic constants. The procedure to evaluate accurate equivalent elastic constants is also established. Using these elastic constants, simple theoretical formulas of the stresses and deflection are proposed in case of the simply-supported orthotropic thick plate under uniform pressure. Through the comparison with the results by commercial FEM code(ANSYS), it is verified that the proposed simpified formula has a good efficiency and accuracy.

The load distribution factor in the perforated square plate under concentrated load acting at arbitrary points through elastic media are calculated. For the calculation the perforated plate was converted into an orthotropic plate using the method suggested by J.B. Mahoney. In the process of the calculation the angle support at each corners was equivalent to a point support having equivalent stiffness. The deflections for the calculation of the load distribution factor were obtained using auxiliary plate extended in both directions of the plate and compared with the results from ANSYS calculations. After showing the validity of the current method, the calculation of the load distribution factor was performed. The result showed that the load distribution factor at the periphery of the plate is larger than that of in the central locations. This load distribution factor could be used for re-distribution of the applied load in more accurate analysis of the plate as well as it can be used in the analysis of the elastic media as the load factor.
The static and dynamic responses of guyed telecommunication towers can be determined by using two models, the space truss element model, and the equivalent beam-column element model. The equivalent beam-column analysis is based on the determination of the equivalent shear, torsion, and bending rigidities as well as the equivalent area of the guyed mast. In the literature, two methods are currently available to determine the equivalent properties of lattice structures, namely: the unit load method, and the energy approach. In this study, an equivalent beam-column analysis is introduced based on an equivalent thin plate approach for lattice structures. A finite-element modeling, using suitably modified ABAQUS software, is used to investigate the accuracy of utilizing the different proposed methods in determining the static and dynamic responses of a guyed tower of 364.5-meter high subjected to static and seismic loading conditions. The results from these analyses are compared to those obtained from a finite-element modeling of the actual structure using 3-D truss and beam elements. Good agreement is shown between the different proposed beam-column models, and the model of the actual structure. However, the proposed equivalent thin plate approach is simpler to apply than the other two approaches.

The problem of electromagnetic coupling through a slit in a flanged parallel-plate waveguide is considered. The equivalent slit admittance associated with reactive powers near the coupling slit inside and outside the waveguide has been obtained. The maximum coupling mechanism for the case of narrow slit has been quantitatively discussed. The effects of various geometrical parameters such as guide height, slit width, and slit of offset on the radiation characteristics of the geometry have been investigated.

A corrugated steel plate wall (CSPW) system is advantageous to secure the strength and stiffness required for lateral force resistance because of its high out-of-plane stability. It can also stably dissipate large amounts of energy even after peak strength. In this paper, a preliminary study has been carried out to use the CSPW system in the seismic retrofit of existing reinforced concrete (RC) moment frame buildings. The seismic performance for an example building was evaluated, and then a step-by-step retrofit design procedure for the CSPW was proposed. An equivalent analytical model of the CSPW was also introduced for a practical analysis of the retrofitted building, and the strengthening effect was finally evaluated based on the results of nonlinear analysis.

An analysis of the free vibration for the metal-piezoceramic laminated thin plates is described. The purpose of this study is to develop a equivalent method for the free vibration analysis of metal-piezoce-ramic laminated thin plate which are not sysmmetric about the adhered layer and the piezoelectric effect. In order to confirm the validity of the vibration analysis, double Fourier sine series is used as a modal displacement function of a metal-piezoceramic laminated thin plate and applied to the free vibration analysis of the plate under various boundary conditions.

Many studies for the perforated plates have been done, especially on the subject of static behavior and stress distribution in the plate. Equivalent elastic properties are one of the successive concepts for this problem. However little effort was taken to get their dynamic characteristics. In this paper finite element modal analysis was performed for the perforated plates having square and triangular hole patterns. An attempt to use existing equivalent elastic properties into the modal analysis of the plate was carried out. To verify feasibility of the finite element models, modal test was also performed on one typical perforated plate. System parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes were extracted and compared with the analysis results.
